Need help setting up IRS payment plan - filed in October, what to expect?

Hey everyone, I need to set up a payment plan with the IRS for my taxes. I filed in October last year and I'm trying to figure out the best way to approach this. Anyone have experience setting up payment arrangements? What should I expect when I talk to them?

I've been through this before. First thing, make sure you have all your financial info ready when you call. They'll ask about your income, expenses, and assets. Be prepared to discuss how much you can realistically pay each month.

This is solid advice. I'd add that you should also have your most recent tax return handy. They might ask for specific info from it.

Thanks for the tips! Do you remember how long the whole process took?

It took me about an hour on the phone, but getting through to someone was the hardest part. Once I got an agent, it went pretty smoothly.

Have you tried calling right when they open? I heard thats the best time to get through.

Listen up, I found a method to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

20 bucks? Idk man, seems kinda steep just to make a phone call.

I get the skepticism, but trust me, it's worth it. I wasted hours trying to get through before. This saved me so much time and frustration.

Here's what you need to know about IRS payment plans: 1. There are short-term plans (180 days or less) and long-term plans. 2. If you owe less than $50,000, you can apply online. 3. There's usually a setup fee, but it can be waived if you meet certain income requirements. 4. Interest and penalties continue to accrue until the balance is paid in full. 5. You can choose your monthly payment date. 6. Direct debit is the cheapest option for long-term plans. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.

Quick question - do you know if they ever negotiate on the amount owed, or is it always the full amount?

They rarely negotiate on the principal amount owed, but in some cases, they might consider an Offer in Compromise. That's a whole different process though, and usually for more extreme situations.

Pro tip: If you can pay it off within 120 days, you might be able to avoid the setup fee for a payment plan. Just ask about a 'Full Payment Agreement' when you talk to them.

Oh, that's good to know! I'll definitely ask about that. Thanks!

I set up a payment plan last year. Make sure you don't miss any payments or they can cancel the whole agreement. Learned that the hard way 😅

Oof, that sounds rough. What happened when they canceled it?

It was a nightmare. Had to start the whole process over and they hit me with more penalties. Don't be like me, set up auto-pay if you can!
