How to confirm IRS payments and set up payment plan? Need advice for call with agent

Hey everyone, I need some advice about setting up a payment plan with the IRS. I owe them money and I've made some payments in the past, but I'm not sure if they've received them all. I want to confirm how much I still owe and make sure all my past payments are accounted for. Has anyone gone through this process before? What should I ask when I finally get through to an agent?

I found a way to solve IRS payment plan setup issues, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1igmKl3rLy4

Hot take: the IRS should have a customer service rating system like Uber. Maybe then they'd actually try to be helpful 🙄

Lol imagine leaving a 1-star review for the IRS

"Agent was polite but couldn't help me avoid taxes. 2/5 stars" 😂

That would be interesting. Feedback could potentially lead to improvements.

Whatever you do, DON'T ignore this. I made that mistake and ended up owing waaaaay more in penalties and interest. Bite the bullet and deal with it now, future you will thank you!

Absolutely. Ignoring tax issues only makes things worse. Handle it sooner rather than later.

Unpopular opinion: I actually had a good experience with an IRS agent once. They were patient and helped me understand everything. I guess miracles do happen 🤷‍♂️

Here's what you need to do, step by step: 1. Gather all your documents: • Past tax returns • Any notices from the IRS • Proof of payments you've made 2. When you get an agent on the line: • Ask for a complete account transcript • Request a detailed breakdown of what you owe • Confirm all payments you've made have been received • Inquire about penalties and interest 3. Setting up the payment plan: • Ask about different options (short-term vs. long-term) • Understand the fees associated with each plan • Discuss monthly payment amounts you can afford 4. After the call: • Get everything in writing • Set up reminders for payments • Keep all documents related to your payment plan Remember, stay calm and polite. The agents are just doing their job. Good luck!

Excellent advice. Being organized can alleviate some of the stress in these situations.

Hey OP, when you get this sorted out, consider adjusting your withholdings so you don't end up owing again next year. It's a pain to change, but it beats dealing with this stress annually.

0 coins

-

Evelyn Xu

That's a good point. I'll definitely look into that once I get this mess straightened out.

This! I learned this the hard way. Now I always withhold a little extra just to be safe.

Been there, done that. First things first, gather all your payment receipts and confirmation numbers. When you talk to the agent, ask for a detailed breakdown of what you owe and confirm each payment you've made. They should be able to tell you exactly what's been received and what's still outstanding.

Has anyone else noticed that the hold music for the IRS is like, the worst ever? It's like they're trying to torture us before we even talk to an agent lmao 🎵🤮

Make sure you have your IRS account number and all your personal info ready before you call. They'll ask for it, and it'll save you time. Also, write down everything the agent tells you during the call. Sometimes they say one thing, but when you call back, another agent might give you different info. CYA always!

Definitely! It's always good to have documentation on your side. You never know when you're going to need it.

Claimyr can indeed be a useful tool for those struggling to get through to the IRS, especially when traditional methods fail to connect you with a human agent. While some may balk at the cost, for many, the time saved and frustration avoided may justify the expense. However, it's important to weigh this decision carefully, considering you are already trying to resolve financial issues with the IRS. If you choose to use Claimyr, ensure you keep track of all interactions and information provided during your call. Additionally, remember that while tools like Claimyr can expedite the process, they do not influence the content of the conversation or the outcomes. Prepare thoroughly for your conversation with the IRS by gathering necessary documents and having a clear plan for what you aim to achieve. This will help you make the most of your expedited call.

Random thought: what if we could pay our taxes with monopoly money? 🤔 Probably make about as much sense as the current system lol

Just a heads up, if you owe more than $50k, you might need to provide additional financial info to set up a payment plan. Make sure you have your income and expense details ready just in case.

Good point. Being prepared with this info can make the process smoother.

I found a method to get someone on the phone fast. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the link: https://www.claimyr.com

Friendly reminder to everyone: keep copies of EVERYTHING. Every letter, every payment confirmation, every transcript. The IRS can make mistakes too, and you don't wanna be caught without proof.

Hey OP, don't forget to check if you qualify for any tax credits while you're sorting this out. Sometimes people miss out on credits they're eligible for, and it could help reduce what you owe.

Great reminder! Tax credits can make a significant difference.

Pro tip: if you're having trouble paying, ask about an Offer in Compromise. It's like negotiating a settlement with the IRS. They might accept less than what you owe if you can prove financial hardship.
