Need advice on setting up IRS monthly payment plan - what to expect?
Hey everyone, I need some advice on setting up a monthly payment plan with the IRS. I owe them money and I'm trying to figure out the best way to handle this. Has anyone gone through this process before? What should I expect when I call them? Any tips or things I should know before I make the call? I'm a bit nervous about talking to them and want to make sure I'm prepared.

I've been through this before. Here's what you need to know: • Be prepared with your financial info. They'll ask about your income, expenses, and other debts. • Start by clearly stating you want to set up a monthly payment plan. • Ask about different types of installment agreements. There are a few options. • Be polite but firm. Make sure the plan is something you can actually afford. • Get everything in writing once you agree on terms. Good luck! It's not as scary as it seems once you get on the phone with them.

This is great advice! I wish I had known all this when I called them last year. I ended up agreeing to a plan I could barely afford 😓

Quick question - how long did the whole process take for you? I'm wondering if I can get this sorted in one call or if it'll be a back-and-forth thing.

@profile 3 In my experience, I got it sorted in one call. Took about an hour tho, so be prepared to wait!

Same boat here. Been on hold for hours and keep getting disconnected. It's so frustrating!

I actually found a way to get through! There's this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that dials the IRS, stays on hold, and then calls you when they get a live agent. It costs $20 but honestly worth it for the time saved. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Jc9x-gysK0

Idk seems kinda sketchy to me. Why should we have to pay to talk to the IRS? 🤔

@profile 8 I get the skepticism, but it's just a time-saving tool. You're not paying to talk to the IRS, you're paying to skip the hold time. Totally optional, but for me it was worth the $20 to not waste half my day on hold.

Has anyone tried negotiating the amount owed? I've heard sometimes they'll settle for less if you can pay a lump sum.

Yep, it's called an Offer in Compromise. But it's not easy to qualify for. They look at your assets, income, and expenses to see if you truly can't pay the full amount.

I tried this and got rejected. Ended up having to do a payment plan anyway. But I guess it doesn't hurt to ask!

Pro tip: if you set up direct debit for your payments, they'll waive some of the fees. Saved me a decent chunk of change over the life of my payment plan.

Preach! 👏 It's all a game to keep us confused and make sure we mess up so they can charge us more.

Make sure you ask about penalty abatement! If it's your first time owing, you might be able to get some of the penalties removed. Saved me hundreds of dollars.

idk if this helps but I found their website actually has a tool to apply for a payment plan online. Might be worth checking out before you call. Saved me the anxiety of talking to someone lol
