Need help ASAP: Past due IRS payments for 2022 & 2023 - What to expect when calling?

Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle here. I owe the IRS for both 2022 and 2023 taxes, and they're past due. I need to make a payment ASAP. Has anyone been through this before? Any tips on how to handle it or what to expect when I call them? I'm kinda nervous about the whole thing.

Oof, been there done that. First things first, don't panic! The IRS isn't as scary as they seem. Call them up and explain your situation. They're usually pretty willing to work with you if you're upfront about it.

Thanks for the reassurance! Did you set up a payment plan when you called? How long did it take to get everything sorted out?

Yep, I did set up a payment plan. It took about 30 minutes on the phone, but most of that was waiting on hold. Once I got through to someone, it was pretty quick. They'll ask about your income and expenses to figure out what you can afford monthly.

30 minutes?! You got lucky. I was on hold for like 2 hours when I called last month šŸ˜©

Listen up, cause this is important: DO NOT ignore this. The longer you wait, the worse it gets. Interest and penalties stack up fast. Call them ASAP and be honest about your situation.

I found a way to get someone on the phone without waiting forever. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Jc9x-gysK0

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit? Anyone else tried it?

I get the skepticism, but yeah, it's legit. I was desperate after being on hold for hours and decided to give it a shot. Worked like a charm. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Here's what you need to know: ā€¢ Don't ignore the debt, it'll only get worse ā€¢ Call the IRS and explain your situation ā€¢ Ask about setting up an installment agreement ā€¢ They might be able to waive some penalties if you have a good reason for the late payment ā€¢ Make sure you're up to date on your current year's taxes ā€¢ Consider using a tax professional if your situation is complicated Remember, the IRS deals with this all the time. They'd rather work with you than against you. Good luck!

Quick tip: if you can pay it all off within 120 days, you might qualify for a short-term payment plan with lower fees. Worth asking about!

Whatever you do, dont ignore it. I did that and ended up owing wayyy more in penalties and intrest. Learn from my fail šŸ˜

Has anyone tried negotiating with the IRS? I've heard sometimes they'll settle for less if you can prove financial hardship.

Yeah, it's called an Offer in Compromise. But it's not easy to get approved for. You gotta prove you really can't pay.

I tried that once. Ended up just wasting time and still had to pay the full amount. YMMV tho

Pro tip: keep ALL your documentation. Every letter, every payment confirmation, everything. The IRS can be like that one friend who always forgets when they owe you money šŸ™„
