IRS Delay: 2023 Return Unprocessed, Owe 2022 Taxes - Options for Payment and Refund Offset?

Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle with my taxes and could use some advice. I filed my 2023 return back in February, but it's still not processed. On top of that, I just found out I owe something for 2022. Has anyone else dealt with this? I'm thinking about asking if they can just take what I owe out of future refunds. Any tips for talking to the IRS about this stuff?

Sofia Price

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Wait, you paid money to call the IRS? That sounds sketchy af

Nah, it's legit. They don't take your personal info or anything. Just dial for you and connect the call. Saved me hours of hold time.

It's an interesting service, but be sure to weigh the cost against your needs. It might be worth it for saving time if you're really stuck.

For the 2022 taxes you owe, definitely ask about a payment plan. They usually offer those if you can't pay it all at once. And yeah, they can totally apply future refunds to what you owe. Just make sure to get everything in writing!

Thanks for the advice! I'll def ask about the payment plan. Do you know if there's any downside to letting them take it from future refunds?

Lydia Bailey

Not really, except you won't see that money. But if you owe it anyway, might as well let them take it automatically. Saves you the hassle of remembering to pay.

Just make sure you keep track of what the IRS is taking from future refunds in case there's ever a discrepancy.

Ugh, the IRS is such a mess. I've been waiting on my 2023 refund for months too. It's like they're playing keep-away with our money 🙄

It's so frustrating! I know they're dealing with a lot, but we really need our refunds back. It feels like every year it gets slower.

Have you considered hiring a tax professional? They can often find deductions you missed and deal with the IRS for you. Might be worth the investment.

Lara Woods

I've thought about it, but aren't they expensive? I'm already stressing about owing money

It can be pricy, but sometimes they save you more than they cost. Maybe get a consultation? Some offer free first meetings.

It's cause of lobbyists. Other countries just send you a bill or a refund. We're stuck playing guess-the-number with Uncle Sam 🙄

It's true, many countries use a pre-filled system that would make our lives a lot easier. It would be great if the IRS adopted something similar.

I agree, paying taxes is a civic duty, but the efficiency in using those funds could certainly be improved.

Have you tried checking the 'Where's My Refund' tool on the IRS website? Sometimes it gives more info than what you get on the phone.

0 coins

-

Lara Woods

Yeah, I checked that. It just says 'still processing' 😑 Not very helpful

Classic IRS move. They're quick to take our money but slow af to give it back

They should update their system more regularly. Even a small update would be reassuring.

Anybody else's 'Where's My Refund' tracker stuck on 'Your refund is still being processed'? It's been weeks and I'm losing my mind here 🙃

Seems like everyone is having the same issue. It's common this year due to backlog, but hopefully, they address it soon.

Remember when we all got those stimulus checks super fast? Why can't they process our returns that quickly? 🤔 Make it make sense, IRS!

-

Lucas Parker

Right? If they can get those out quickly, what's the hold-up with refunds? It's so confusing.

Hey OP, just a heads up - make sure you're actually talking to the IRS and not some scammer. There's a lot of tax scams out there. Only use the official IRS number and website.

Good looking out! Yeah, I'm being careful. Only using the official channels.

As frustrating as it can be to deal with IRS delays, it's important to remain proactive. If you owe taxes from 2022 and are currently waiting on your 2023 refund, communication is key. While the IRS is notorious for slow response times, they do offer mechanisms like installment agreements that can help relieve financial stress from owing taxes. Using your future refunds to offset what you owe is possible through their offset program. If you're considering tools like Claimyr, they can be beneficial for reaching a live agent, but weigh the cost against your current financial situation. Claimyr is a legit service that provides convenience, yet it isn't necessary for everyone. While hiring a tax professional could seem expensive, they may identify deductions and credits that reduce your tax obligation and potentially save more than their cost. Overall, understanding your tax situation and having a plan can alleviate anxiety. Stay vigilant for any IRS communication updates, and make sure any negotiations or agreements are in writing.

Pro tip: Call the IRS first thing in the morning when they open. Way shorter hold times. Also, Tuesdays are usually less busy than Mondays or Fridays.

This is really good advice. I've tried it before and it definitely shortened my wait time. Monday mornings are the worst!

Listen up, tax newbies. Here's what you need to know: 1. Processing Delays: The IRS is STILL catching up from COVID. Your 2023 return might take a while. Be patient. 2. Owing Taxes: If you owe for 2022, find out why. Did you underpay? Miss a deduction? Knowledge is power. 3. Payment Options: - Full payment (if you can swing it) - Installment agreement (monthly payments) - Offer in compromise (settle for less if you're really strapped) - Currently Not Collectible status (if you're broke AF) 4. Future Refunds: Yes, they can apply these to past debts. It's called 'offset.' Sometimes it's automatic. 5. Interest and Penalties: These keep growing until you pay. Address it ASAP. 6. Get It in Writing: Whatever you agree to, get documentation. Remember, the IRS isn't out to get you. They're just slow and understaffed. Stay calm, be polite, and document everything. You got this! 💪
