IRS letter claims I owe more on 2022 taxes - What to do?

Just got a letter from the IRS saying I owe more money on my 2022 tax return. Has anyone else dealt with this? I thought I filed everything correctly and even got a small refund. Now they're saying I owe more? I'm so confused and frustrated. Any advice on what to do next or how to handle this?

Ugh, same boat here. Got a similar letter last week and nearly had a heart attack. Did you use any tax software or have an accountant do your taxes? Might be worth double-checking everything before you respond to the IRS.

I used TurboTax, thought it was pretty straightforward. But maybe I missed something? 😓 Did you find any errors in yours?

Nah, mine looked good too. I'm starting to think its a glitch in their system or something. Seems like a lot of ppl are getting these letters 🤔

Guys, always double check your math even with software. The IRS doesn't make mistakes often. Its probably something small you overlooked.

This happened to me last year! Don't panic, it's not as bad as it seems. First, carefully review the letter. It should explain why they think you owe more. Sometimes it's a simple misunderstanding or they didn't receive a form you submitted. Here's what I did: 1. Double-checked all my documents 2. Called the IRS (be prepared to wait forever) 3. Explained my situation 4. They actually found an error on their end! Just stay calm and gather all your docs before you do anything else. Good luck!

Thanks for the detailed advice! How long did it take to resolve everything once you called them?

It took about 2 months total, but most of that was waiting for them to process everything. The actual call and resolution was pretty quick once I got through.

lol welcome to adulting 101: where the rules are made up and the numbers don't matter 🤡 but srsly, the IRS is a mess rn. Good luck getting anyone on the phone!

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the IRS! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

20 bucks to skip the hold time? Idk man, seems kinda sketchy...

I get the skepticism, but it seriously worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Just sharing what helped me out 🤷‍♂️

Can confirm, I used it too. Pricey but worth it if you're in a time crunch.

Have you considered that you might have undereported some income? Did you have any side gigs or investments that you might have forgotten about? The IRS usually doesn't make these claims without some basis.

I did some freelance work, but I'm pretty sure I reported all of it. Maybe I messed up the forms somehow? 😖

That could be it. Freelance income can be tricky. Make sure you reported it on Schedule C and paid self-employment tax if necessary.

This is why I always use a CPA. Worth every penny for the peace of mind. Plus, if there are any issues, they deal with the IRS on your behalf.

Protip: If you cant afford a CPA, check if you qualify for free tax help through VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance). They can help you figure out whats going on and maybe even file an amended return if needed.

VITA is awesome! They helped my parents last year when they had a similar issue. Totally free and super helpful.

Plot twist: what if the letter is a scam? 🕵️‍♂️ Make sure it's legit before you do anything else. Scammers are getting pretty sophisticated these days.

Omg I didn't even think of that! How can I verify if it's real?

Check the IRS website for official contact info and compare it to what's on your letter. Never call numbers or click links in the letter itself. Always go straight to IRS.gov

yall ever wonder if the irs just throws darts at a board to decide who owes money? 🎯💸 #TaxationIsTheft

Lol, right? Sometimes it feels that way. But for real, they usually have a reason, even if it's not immediately clear to us mere mortals 😂
