Got an IRS letter about tax return discrepancies - what to expect when I call?
Hey everyone, I just got a letter from the IRS and I'm not sure what to do. Has anyone dealt with this before? What should I expect when I call them? I'm kinda freaking out here.

Ugh, IRS letters are the worst. Don't panic tho, it's probably nothing major. What does the letter say? Is it about taxes you owe or something else?

Thanks for the reassurance. It's about some discrepancies in my last year's tax return. I'm worried I might have made a mistake 😰

Oh that's not too bad! Happens all the time. Just call them and explain. They're usually pretty helpful if you're honest.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work? How long did you have to wait?

It worked for me! I waited about 2 hours, but I didn't have to sit there listening to hold music. The service called me when an agent was on the line.

20 bucks tho? Idk man, seems steep just to make a phone call.

I get it, but for me it was worth it. Saved me a whole day of trying to get through. Time is money, ya know? 💁♂️

Here's what you need to do: 1. Don't panic. IRS letters are common and often just require clarification. 2. Read the letter carefully. Note any deadlines and specific instructions. 3. Gather all relevant documents (tax returns, receipts, etc.) 4. If you used tax software or an accountant, contact them first. They might handle it for you. 5. If you need to call the IRS, be patient. Wait times can be long. 6. Be polite and cooperative when you talk to them. They're just doing their job. 7. Take notes during the call and get the agent's name and ID number. 8. If it's a complex issue, consider hiring a tax professional. Remember, most IRS issues can be resolved easily if you're proactive and honest. Good luck!

Whatever you do, DON'T ignore the letter. I made that mistake once and ended up owing way more in penalties. Learn from my fail 😫

Pro tip: if you cant get thru on the main line, try calling your local IRS office. Sometimes its easier to reach a human there and they can often help with the same stuff.

This! 👆 Local offices are the secret sauce. Way less wait time usually.
