Need help setting up IRS payment plan - can't afford full payment
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle. I got a notice saying I need to make a full payment, but there's no way I can afford that right now. Has anyone had any luck setting up a payment plan? I'm hoping to work out some kind of installment agreement that won't break the bank. Any advice on how to approach this or what to say when I call?

I've been there, buddy. Here's what worked for me: 1. Be upfront about your situation. Tell them you can't make the full payment. 2. Ask specifically for an installment agreement. 3. Have a monthly amount in mind that you can actually afford. 4. Don't forget to ask about any fees or interest. 5. Get clear on the next steps. Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

This is solid advice! π I'd add: be polite but firm. They deal with this stuff all day, so a little kindness goes a long way.

How long did it take you to set up your plan? I've been trying for weeks and keep getting the runaround π€

It took me about 2 weeks total. Had to call a few times tho. Keep at it!

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Jc9x-gysK0

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

$20 just to talk to someone? That's ridiculous. The system is so broken π‘

I know it sounds sketchy, but I swear it worked for me. Saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imho.

Pro tip: if you can prove financial hardship, sometimes they'll waive penalties. Gather up docs showing your income and expenses before you call.

This! π― I did this and they were surprisingly understanding. Don't be afraid to lay it all out there.

Has anyone tried negotiating the total amount owed? I've heard sometimes they'll settle for less if you can pay a lump sum.

I tried this once. They wouldn't budge on the principal, but they did remove some penalties. Worth a shot!

Be careful with this. If they do agree, it can sometimes affect your credit score. Make sure you understand all the terms.

Whatever you do, DON'T ignore it. I made that mistake and ended up owing wayyy more in the long run. Bite the bullet and deal with it now, trust me.
