IRS Refund Delay: 5 Weeks and Counting - What to Do?

Hey everyone, I'm getting a bit anxious about my tax refund. It's been about 5 weeks since I filed and I still haven't received anything. I know the IRS says it can take up to 21 days, but I'm starting to worry. Has anyone else been waiting this long? Any ideas on what I should do next?

5 weeks isn't too bad actually. I've been waiting for 2 months now! 😩 Have you checked the Where's My Refund tool on the IRS website? That's usually pretty helpful.

Yeah, I've been checking that tool every day. It just says 'Your return is still being processed.' Not very helpful tbh 😕

Same boat here. Been checking daily and no updates. Starting to think the IRS is just a black hole where our money disappears 🕳️💸

Ugh, that sucks. Maybe try calling them? I know it's a pain, but sometimes you can get more info that way.

Pro tip: Check your IRS account transcript online. It often has more detailed info than the Where's My Refund tool. You might see some codes or updates there that could give you a better idea of what's going on with your refund.

Thanks for the tip! I'll give that a try. Do you know if I need to create an account for that or something?

Yeah, you'll need to create an account on the IRS website. It's a bit of a process, but totally worth it. You'll need some ID and financial info to verify your identity.

5 weeks? That's nothing lol. I filed in February and I'm still waiting. The IRS is seriously understaffed and overworked. Just gotta be patient 🐢

Have you tried calling the IRS? I know it's a nightmare to get through, but I actually found a way to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/UiAegRQ2Is8

Sounds like a scam. Why would you pay $20 just to make a phone call? 🤔

I get why you'd think that, but it's legit. I was skeptical too, but after spending hours trying to get through myself, it was worth every penny. Saved me so much time and frustration.

How long did you have to wait once they connected you?

Only about 5 minutes! Way better than the hours I spent trying to do it myself. They handle all the menu options and hold time.

Here's what I've learned from dealing with the IRS for years: 1. Be patient. The 21-day guideline is just that - a guideline. Many refunds take longer, especially if there are any issues with your return. 2. Check your transcript. As others have mentioned, this often has more detailed info than the Where's My Refund tool. 3. Look for specific codes on your transcript. For example, 570 means there's a hold on your account, while 846 means your refund has been issued. 4. If you see a 570 code, look for a 971 code. This usually means a notice has been sent to you explaining the hold. 5. Don't call the IRS unless it's been more than 21 days (for e-file) or 6 weeks (for paper filing), or unless the Where's My Refund tool specifically tells you to call. 6. If you do need to call, be prepared for long wait times. Consider using a service like the one mentioned above if you're really struggling to get through. 7. Make sure you're checking the correct tax year when looking at your transcript or using the Where's My Refund tool. Hope this helps! Hang in there, OP. The waiting game sucks, but your refund will come eventually.

Wow, thank you so much for this detailed info! This is super helpful. I'll definitely check my transcript for those codes.

This should be pinned at the top of the subreddit tbh. Great info! 👍

have u tried prayin to the IRS gods? 🙏💸 I hear they accept sacrifices in the form of completed 1040 forms lmao

Instructions unclear. Sacrificed my W-2 and now I'm being audited. 😂

Unpopular opinion: maybe we should just be grateful we're getting a refund at all? I mean, it's our own money we overpaid, but still... some people owe thousands.

Found the IRS employee 👀

Lol nah, just trying to stay positive. Trust me, I'm as annoyed as everyone else about the wait.
