IRS 2023 Tax Refund Delayed for a Year - What to Do?
Hey everyone, I'm getting really frustrated with my tax refund situation. It's been a whole year since I filed my 2023 taxes and I still haven't received my refund. Has anyone else been waiting this long? I'm starting to worry something might be wrong with my return. Any advice on what I should do next?

Wow, a year is definitely too long! Have you tried checking your tax transcript on the IRS website? It might give you some clues about whats going on with your refund.

ā¢Thanks for the suggestion! I haven't looked at my transcript yet. How do I access that on the IRS site?

ā¢No problem! Just go to irs.gov and look for 'Get Transcript Online'. You'll need to create an account if you haven't already. Once you're in, you can view your tax transcript and look for any codes or updates about your refund status.

Have you tried calling the IRS directly? Sometimes that's the only way to get answers, even though it can be a pain to get through.

ā¢I've thought about it, but I've heard horror stories about being on hold forever. Is it even worth trying?

ā¢It can be hit or miss, but if you've been waiting this long, it might be worth a shot. Just be prepared to spend a good chunk of your day on hold.

ā¢Pro tip: I found a way to skip the hold times. There's this site called claimyr.com that has a calling tool. It dials the IRS, navigates the menu, waits on hold, and then calls you when a real person picks up. It costs $20, but it saved me hours of frustration. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

ā¢Whoa, that sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

ā¢I'm skeptical... $20 to make a phone call? Sounds like a scam to me. š¤

ā¢I get the skepticism, but it's legit. I was desperate after waiting on hold for hours multiple times. This service actually worked for me. saved my sanity tbh

Listen up, folks. I've been dealing with IRS issues for years, and here's what you need to know about long refund delays: ⢠First, check your tax transcript online. Look for codes like 570 (refund hold) or 971 (notice issued). ⢠If you see unusual codes, you might have been selected for review or audit. ⢠Common reasons for delays: identity verification, math errors, or discrepancies with reported income. ⢠The IRS is still catching up from COVID backlogs, so some delays are unfortunately normal. ⢠If it's been over 21 days since you e-filed (or 6 weeks for paper returns), you can request a trace on your refund. ⢠Consider contacting the Taxpayer Advocate Service if you're facing financial hardship due to the delay. Remember, patience is key, but don't be afraid to be proactive if something seems off. Good luck!

ā¢Wow, this is incredibly helpful! Thank you so much for taking the time to write all this out. I'll definitely check my transcript for those codes.

Has anyone else noticed that the 'Where's My Refund' tool is basically useless? It never seems to have any real info.

Just a heads up, if you filed a paper return, those are taking even longer to process. I filed paper last year and it took 14 months to get my refund. Hang in there!

ā¢Oh no, I did file paper... guess I'm in for a long wait š©

ā¢Yeah, it's rough. Next year, definitely e-file if you can. It usually speeds things up a lot.

Anyone else think its crazy that they can take our money instantly but take forever to give it back? š¤ Make it make sense

Have you checked if there were any math errors on your return? Sometimes that can cause major delays.

I feel your pain! I'm actually going through something similar - been waiting 10 months for my 2023 refund. After reading through all these comments, I'm definitely going to check my tax transcript like Nick suggested. That breakdown of the codes to look for is super helpful. I had no idea about the Taxpayer Advocate Service either - might be worth looking into if this drags on much longer. It's frustrating how inconsistent the whole process seems to be. Some people get their refunds in weeks, others wait over a year. Hang in there, Ryan! š¤
