2020 IRS Refund Still Not Received After 8 Months - What Can I Do?

I filed my 2020 tax return back in April and still haven't received my refund. It's been months and I'm getting really frustrated. I tried calling the IRS but after waiting on hold for two hours, no one ever picked up. Has anyone else had this problem or know what I should do next? I'm worried there might be an issue with my return but I haven't received any notices either.

Ugh, welcome to the club. I've been waiting on my 2020 refund since March. The IRS is a total mess right now. Have you tried checking the 'Where's My Refund' tool on their website? It's not super helpful, but at least it might tell you if there's a problem.

Yeah, I've checked that tool like a million times. It just says 'Your return is still being processed.' So frustrating! 😤

I found a method to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

20 bucks? Thats highway robbery! The IRS should pick up their own damn phones 😡

I get the skepticism, but after waiting months and wasting hours on hold, $20 was worth it to me. Got through to an agent in about 2 hours without having to sit by my phone.

How does it work exactly? Do you have to keep your phone line open?

Nope, that's the beauty of it. The service calls you when an agent picks up. You just go about your day and wait for the call.

Here's what you need to do: 1. Check your transcript online if you can. It might show if there's an issue or if they've made any adjustments. 2. If you can't access your transcript, you NEED to talk to someone. Keep calling until you get through. Early morning or right before they close are sometimes better. 3. When you do get through, ask specifically if there are any holds on your account and why your refund is delayed. 4. If they say it's still processing, ask for a taxpayer advocate. They can sometimes help move things along. 5. If all else fails, contact your local congressman's office. They have liaisons who can inquire on your behalf. Don't give up! The squeaky wheel gets the grease in these situations.

Wow, thank you so much for this detailed advice! I'll definitely try accessing my transcript first. Really appreciate you taking the time to write all this out!

This is solid advice. I had to go the congressman route last year and it actually worked. Took about 3 weeks but I finally got my refund after that.

have u tried faxing them? I know it sounds crazy in 2023 but I've heard some ppl having success that way 🤷‍♂️

Its probably cuz of covid. The IRS is way behind on everything. I filed in Feb and just got my refund last week. Hang in there!

Covid excuse is getting old tbh. Its been 3 years, they need to get their act together 🙄

Fair point, but they're dealing with a huge backlog and budget cuts. Not saying it's right, just explaining why it's happening.

Plot twist: the IRS actually owes YOU money for the emotional distress of waiting so long 🤣

This happened to me last year. Turns out there was a discrepancy between what I reported and what my employer reported. Double check all your documents and make sure everything matches up.

Oh man, I hadn't even thought of that. I'll definitely go back and check everything. Thanks for the tip!

Anyone else feel like we're living in a dystopian novel where the government just... doesn't work? 🤔

I'm in the exact same boat! Filed in March 2020 and still waiting. What's really frustrating is that they processed my stimulus payments just fine, but can't seem to handle a regular refund. I've tried the transcript route like @Giovanni Rossi suggested - turns out there was a code on mine indicating "additional review needed" but no explanation of what that means. Currently trying to get through to a human being but the hold times are absolutely insane. This whole situation is beyond ridiculous.
