IRS 2024 Tax Refund Delayed 60+ Days After Identity Verification - Still Shows as "Received"
Hey everyone, I'm having some issues with my tax refund and I'm hoping someone here can help. I filed as Single Head of Household and it's been over 60 days since I submitted my return. The IRS website says it's taking longer than normal to process, but I'm getting worried. I even got a letter saying I needed to verify my identity, which I did on their website. They said my refund would be issued in 21 days after that, but it's been two weeks and the status still just says "received". Has anyone else dealt with this? Any idea what could be causing the delay?

Ugh, I'm in the same boat. Filed back in February and still nothing. The IRS is such a mess this year π€¦ββοΈ

I had a similar issue last year. Here's what I learned: β’ The identity verification process can add 9-12 weeks to processing time β’ "Received" status means they have your return but haven't started processing β’ If you claimed certain credits (like Earned Income Tax Credit), it can take longer β’ Sometimes, they need additional information and will send a letter β’ Budget cuts have seriously impacted IRS staffing and processing times My advice: Keep checking the "Where's My Refund" tool weekly. If it's been more than 21 days since you verified your identity and you see no updates, try calling the IRS directly. Be prepared for long wait times. If you can't get through, consider contacting the Taxpayer Advocate Service for help. Hang in there! It's frustrating, but your refund will come eventually.

β’Wow, thank you so much for this detailed response! I didn't realize the identity verification could add that much time. I'll keep checking and try to be patient.

β’This is really helpful info. Do you know if theres a specific number to call for refund status updates?

β’Yeah, you can try the IRS refund hotline at 800-829-1954. But be warned, it's usually swamped.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Jc9x-gysK0

β’Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

β’Yeah, it's totally legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo.

β’How long did it take for them to get someone on the line?

β’For me, it took about 2 hours. But I didn't have to sit there listening to hold music the whole time. They just called me when an agent was on the line.

THE IRS IS A JOKE! π€‘ They expect us to pay on time but can't even process our refunds. Maybe we should start charging them interest! πΈ

Has anyone else noticed that the "Where's My Refund" tool seems to be stuck in 2005? You'd think with all the money they collect, they could at least update their website π

β’LOL for real. It's like they're using dial-up internet or something π

β’Maybe they're too busy swimming in our tax dollars to bother with updates πββοΈπ°

Pro tip: If you're really desperate, you can try contacting your local congressperson's office. They sometimes have ways to expedite things with the IRS.

β’I never thought of that! Have you tried it yourself?

β’Yep, I did it last year when my refund was MIA for months. Took about 2 weeks, but they got it sorted.

β’Deep breaths, my friend. Processing errors are usually fixable. Did they give you any timeframe for resolution?

Plot twist: What if the IRS is secretly using all our refund money to fund a mission to Mars? π½π

I'm dealing with something similar! Filed in early March and did the identity verification about 3 weeks ago. Still stuck on "received" status too. What's really frustrating is that they give you these timeframes (like "21 days after verification") but then there's no follow-up when they don't meet them. I've been checking the transcript tool that @Anastasia Sokolov mentioned - it does show a bit more detail than the basic refund tracker. Hang in there, hopefully we'll see movement soon! π€

β’Thanks for sharing your experience! It's oddly comforting to know I'm not alone in this frustrating situation. The 21-day timeline after verification really does feel misleading when they don't stick to it. I'll definitely check out the transcript tool - hopefully it gives me some insight into what's actually happening with my return. Fingers crossed we both see some progress soon! π€
