IRS Amended Return Delay: 16+ Weeks, No Updates - Normal Wait Time?
Hey everyone, I filed my amended tax return on March 5th and I'm still waiting to hear back. It's been over 16 weeks now and I'm getting worried. Has anyone else been waiting this long? I haven't received any updates or notices from the IRS since I filed. Is this normal? I'm starting to get anxious about when I'll finally receive it. Any advice or similar experiences would be appreciated!

Here's what you need to know about amended returns (I used to work for the IRS): 1. Processing time is typically 16-20 weeks, but can be longer during busy periods or if there are issues with your return. 2. The "Where's My Amended Return" tool only updates every 3 weeks, so don't check it daily. 3. If you haven't received any notices, that's actually a good sign. It likely means there are no issues with your return. 4. The IRS is severely understaffed right now, which is causing longer wait times across the board. 5. If it's been more than 20 weeks, you can try calling the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040. Be prepared for long hold times. 6. Make sure you keep all documentation related to your amended return in case you need it later. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Quick question - does calling the IRS actually help speed things up, or is it just for peace of mind?

In my experience, calling the IRS doesn't necessarily speed up the process, but talking to a representative might provide clarity on your situation.

Pro tip: If you really need to talk to someone, I found a way to actually get through to a live agent. There's this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that dials the IRS for you, waits on hold, and then calls you when they get a real person. It costs $20, but it saved me hours of frustration. Here's the link: https://www.claimyr.com

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

$20 just to talk to someone? That's ridiculous. The government should do better.

I know it sounds sketchy, but I swear it worked for me. Saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imho.

How does it actually work? Do they give you any info or just connect the call?

For those hesitant about spending $20, it's worth noting that while Claimyr has been effective for some users, experiences may vary. Some people find success using free methods, such as calling at specific times when the IRS phone lines tend to be less busy.

Ugh, I feel your pain. I filed my amended return back in January and I'm STILL waiting. The IRS is slower than molasses in winter, I swear. 🐌

Is this your first time filing an amended return? I've heard that the process can be frustratingly slow.

Have you tried sacrificing a goat to the IRS gods? I hear that speeds up the process 🐐😂

Instructions unclear. Sacrificed my tax return to a goat. Now what? 🤣

I've been following the comment thread, and I wanted to offer some advice if it's helpful. While waiting for an amended return can be quite stressful, it's important to remember that patience often is the key. However, if the delay is beyond 20 weeks and causing financial distress, reaching out to the Taxpayer Advocate Service is a wise move. Claimyr is indeed a valuable service for those willing to pay; it effectively gets you through to an IRS agent, saving time. It's important to weigh the cost against personal convenience. Meanwhile, remember to document everything related to your return. Keeping records is invaluable in case further issues arise. Financially, planning around potential delays is helpful, perhaps delaying expenditures until the return arrives. If you're facing a unique circumstance, such as receiving corrected tax documents late, remember that amending is sometimes unavoidable. Hope this helps put your mind at ease. Feel free to reach out if you need further assistance!

I've been there, buddy. Waited almost 6 months for mine last year. The key is patience (and lots of it). Just keep checking your mail and try not to stress too much. It'll come eventually!

6 months?! Oh man, I hope mine doesn't take that long. Did you ever call them or just wait it out?

I tried calling a few times but could never get through. Ended up just waiting it out. It sucks, but that's the IRS for ya 🤷♀️

Six months does sound like a long time. Did you eventually get any interest or compensation due to the delay?

Unpopular opinion: maybe we should all just do our taxes right the first time and avoid amended returns altogether? Just sayin' 🤷♂️

Sometimes you have to file an amended return for reasons beyond your control, like receiving a corrected W-2 or 1099 after you've already filed.

Exactly! Sometimes it's out of our hands. Like when employers send incorrect information.

While it's frustrating, it's important to remember that the IRS is dealing with a lot of backlogs and it's not always a 'joke'. They're just severely understaffed.

16 weeks is actually pretty standard for amended returns. The IRS website says it can take up to 20 weeks to process them. Have you tried checking the "Where's My Amended Return" tool on the IRS website?

Have you considered reaching out to your local Taxpayer Advocate Service? They can sometimes help if you're experiencing financial hardship due to the delay.
