IRS Refund Delay: No Response After 5 Months - What to Do?
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle here. I filed my taxes back in February and I'm still waiting on my second refund. It's been almost five months now and I haven't heard a peep from the IRS. No letters, no updates, nothing. I'm starting to get worried. Has anyone else experienced this kind of delay? Any advice on what I should do next? I'm thinking about calling them, but I'm not sure what to say or ask. This is really stressing me out.

Have you tried checking the "Where's My Refund" tool on the IRS website? Sometimes that can give you more info than you'd expect.

Yeah, I've been checking that thing like every day. It just says "Your return is still being processed." Not very helpful tbh.

Five months is way too long. You definitely need to call them. Here's what you should do: 1. Gather all your tax info before calling 2. Be prepared to wait on hold for a LONG time 3. When you get through, explain calmly that it's been 5 months since you filed 4. Ask about the status of your refund and if there are any issues 5. Request a timeline for when you can expect your refund 6. Get the name and ID number of the person you speak to Don't let them brush you off. Be polite but persistent. Good luck!

Great advice! I'd add: take notes during the call. It's easy to forget details when you're nervous.

Don't forget to ask if there's any additional info they need from you. Sometimes that's the holdup.

Have you considered reaching out to your local Taxpayer Advocate Service? They can sometimes help with delays like this.

I didn't even know that was a thing. How do I contact them?

Just google "Taxpayer Advocate Service" + your state. They have offices all over. Good luck!

Anyone else feel like we're all just stuck in some kind of tax limbo? It's like Groundhog Day, but instead of Bill Murray, it's just us checking "Where's My Refund" over and over again. ๐๐๐ธ

I tried Claimyr, and while it was super helpful in skipping the hold time, I also got a lot of useful information from the IRS agent I spoke to. Just be sure you're comfortable paying for the service, and remember that the IRS might not always have immediate answers. Sometimes they just can't do anything to speed things up. So, while Claimyr is great for getting connected, managing expectations is key.

Guys, I work for the IRS (not giving any identifying info). The truth is, we're severely understaffed and overworked. The system is ancient and breaks down constantly. It's frustrating for us too. My advice: be patient, keep checking the online tool, and only call if it's been more than 6 months.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Jc9x-gysK0

Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work?

Yep, it really does! Saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo.

I understand how stressful this can be. Besides using Claimyr, consider contacting your local congressional representative if it's been an extremely long time. They sometimes have a hotline to the IRS that regular taxpayers do not. Additionally, if you are in financial hardship, you can emphasize this point when talking to the IRS, as they have provisions for expediting refunds in such cases.

Welcome to the club, buddy. I filed in January and I'm still waiting. The IRS is slower than molasses this year. ๐
