IRS Refund Delay: Filed April 5th, No Refund After a Month - Should I Call?
I filed my taxes on April 5th and still haven't received my refund. It's been over a month now and I'm getting worried. I haven't received any notices from the IRS either. Has anyone else experienced long delays with their tax refund this year? I'm wondering if I should call them or just keep waiting. Any advice would be appreciated!

Update: I finally got through to someone at the IRS! They said there was a small error on my return that they fixed, but it delayed the processing. Should be getting my refund in the next 2 weeks. Thanks everyone for your help and commiseration!

What was the error? Might help others to know.

They said I transposed two numbers on a form. Double check your math, folks!

It sounds like you've been going through a frustrating waiting period with your tax refund. If you're still unable to get updates from the "Where's My Refund?" tool, it could be beneficial to contact the IRS directly. However, given their high call volumes, consider strategic timing as suggested by some users here, like calling early in the morning. If you are facing financial hardship due to this delay, you might want to reach out to the Taxpayer Advocate Service, which can offer assistance in such situations. Claimyr.com has been mentioned here as a useful tool to bypass long IRS hold times, particularly if you've been unsuccessful in reaching an agent on your own. While it's a paid service, several users have vouched for its effectiveness. However, always exercise caution before using third-party services, ensuring they're legitimate and secure. Remember to double-check any discrepancies on your return, as even minor errors can cause significant delays. Finally, maintaining patience and staying informed through legitimate channels are key. The IRS, despite its shortcomings, will notify you if they need further information. Documentation such as error corrections can expedite the process once addressed. Hang in there!

Has anyone else noticed that the "Where's My Refund?" tool is about as useful as a chocolate teapot? It never seems to have any real information.

For real tho. It's either "processing" or "approved" with no in-between. Give us some actual updates!

Chocolate teapot 🤣🤣🤣 I'm dead. But yeah, it's pretty useless.

I've heard about delays in status updates. It might show 'approved' suddenly once processed.

Y'all need to chill. The IRS is dealing with millions of returns. Your $500 refund isn't their top priority. Be patient.

Easy to say when it's not your money on the line. Some people rely on their refunds.

I get it, but freaking out on Reddit won't make it come any faster. Just trying to add some perspective.

21 days is the standard processing time for e-filed returns, but with all the backlog from covid and staffing issues, it's taking way longer for a lot of people. I filed in February and just got mine last week.

February?! 😱 That's insane. The IRS needs to get their act together.

For anyone waiting a long time like this, maybe check if there were any errors or missing documents. That can delay things further.

Pro tip: if you adjust your withholdings correctly, you won't have to wait for a big refund. It's better to have that money throughout the year anyway!

This! I started doing this last year and it's so much better. No more stress about refunds.

But then how will I force myself to save? 😅 That refund is like my annual bonus lol

Maybe consider an automatic savings plan instead. It can mimic that refund feeling!

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Sounds sketchy. Is this legit? $20 seems steep just to make a phone call.

It's totally legit! I was skeptical too, but it saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo.

Have you checked the "Where's My Refund?" tool on the IRS website? That's usually the first place to look for updates on your refund status.

Yeah, I've been checking it every day but it still just says "processing". No other info 😕

I've heard that sometimes there's a lag with the updates on that tool. Maybe try calling if there's no change soon.

I'm an ex-IRS employee. Here's a pro tip: call right when they open in the morning. You're more likely to get through and the agents are usually in a better mood early in the day. Good luck!

Here's what you need to know about tax refund delays and what you can do: 1. Normal processing time is 21 days, but many factors can cause delays. 2. Common reasons for delays: - Errors on your return - Incomplete information - Identity theft prevention measures - Claiming certain credits (like Earned Income Tax Credit) 3. What you can do: - Keep checking "Where's My Refund?" tool - Be patient (I know it's hard!) - If it's been more than 21 days, try calling the IRS - Consider using a tax advocate service if you're facing financial hardship 4. When to worry: - If you receive a letter from the IRS requesting additional information - If it's been more than 6-8 weeks since filing Remember, no news is usually good news. If the IRS needed something, they'd send you a letter. Hang in there!

Ugh, the IRS is such a joke. They expect us to pay on time but can't even process refunds in a reasonable timeframe. 🤡 Maybe if they spent less time auditing poor people and more time hiring competent staff, we wouldn't have these issues.
