How to update business address with IRS for EIN? First-timer needs help!

Hey everyone, I need to update the address attached to my EIN number with the IRS. It's my first time doing this and I'm not really sure how to go about it. Has anyone gone through this process before? Any tips or advice would be really appreciated!

I've done this before. Here's what you need to do: 1. Gather your EIN, current address, and new address 2. Call the IRS Business & Specialty Tax Line at 800-829-4933 3. Tell them you need to update your business address 4. They'll ask for your EIN and verify some info 5. Provide your new address 6. Ask for confirmation that everything's updated Make sure you have any recent IRS notices handy, just in case. Good luck!

This is super helpful, thanks! Do you know how long it usually takes for the update to go through?

In my experience, it's pretty quick - usually within a week or two. But if you have any time-sensitive mail coming, let them know and they might be able to expedite it.

Ugh, calling the IRS sounds like a nightmare. I'd rather get a root canal 😫

Lol, I feel you. It's not fun, but it's not as bad as you think. Just be patient and have everything ready before you call.

I tried updating my address online through the IRS website, but it didn't work for me. Had to call in the end. Just a heads up!

Whatever you do, DON'T send this info by email. The IRS will never ask for sensitive info via email. Always call or use their official website.

Good point! There are so many scams out there these days. Better safe than sorry 👍

I found a way to get someone on the phone without waiting forever. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the link: https://www.claimyr.com

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

Yeah, it's legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo.

make sure you keep a record of when you made the change and who you spoke to. The IRS can be a real pain if theres any discrepancies later on

That's a great tip, thanks! I'll definitely make a note of everything.

Anyone else think its ridiculous that we cant just do this online in 2023? The IRS needs to get with the times smh

Preach! 🙌 Their systems are probably running on DOS or something lol

For real tho. My grandma's flip phone is more high-tech than the IRS 🤣

Just went thru this last month. Took about 3 weeks for the change to fully process. Hang in there!

Pro tip: if you have any tax forms or payments due soon, make sure to use your OLD address until you're 100% sure the new one is in their system. Learned that one the hard way 😅

Oof, thanks for the heads up! I'll definitely keep that in mind.

Another option if you don't want to call is to mail Form SS-4 with the updated information to the IRS. It takes longer (4-6 weeks typically), but some people prefer it over dealing with phone hold times. Just make sure to write "CHANGE OF ADDRESS" at the top and include your current EIN. You can find the form on the IRS website.

Oh wow, I didn't know about the mail option! That's actually perfect for me since I hate being on hold. Do you know if there are any downsides to doing it by mail instead of calling?

0 coins

The main downside is just the time - it takes way longer than calling. Also, if there are any issues with your form or they need clarification on something, they'll have to mail you back which adds even more time. But if you're not in a rush and want to avoid the phone hassle, it's definitely a solid option!

I actually just went through this process a few months ago when I moved my small business. The phone route mentioned by Zainab is definitely the fastest - I got through in about 20 minutes and they updated it on the spot. One thing I'd add is to also update your address with your state if you have a state business registration. The IRS and state don't automatically sync, so you'll need to do both separately. Also, if you have any quarterly payments or tax filings coming up, double-check that they have the right address before the deadline. Good luck with the move!

This is really comprehensive advice, thank you! I didn't even think about the state registration part - that would have been a headache to deal with later. Quick question: when you called, did you need any specific documentation beyond just your EIN and addresses, or was that sufficient?

Just wanted to add that if you're dealing with any business banking or credit accounts tied to your EIN, you'll probably want to update those addresses too once the IRS change goes through. I forgot to do this and had some confusion with my business credit card statements getting sent to the old address. It's one of those domino effects you don't think about until it happens!

Thanks for all the helpful responses everyone! I just wanted to share what ended up working for me in case it helps other first-timers. I followed Zainab's advice and called the IRS Business line (800-829-4933). I was on hold for about 45 minutes, but the agent was really helpful once I got through. They walked me through everything step by step and confirmed the address change right on the call. The whole conversation took maybe 10 minutes once I actually reached someone. For anyone else doing this, definitely have your EIN ready, both your old and new addresses written down clearly, and maybe grab a snack while you wait on hold! The agent also reminded me that it can take 4-6 weeks for the change to fully show up in all their systems, so I'm going to keep using my old address for any tax stuff until then just to be safe.

That's awesome that you got it sorted out! 45 minutes on hold isn't too bad for the IRS - I've heard horror stories of people waiting 2+ hours. Thanks for sharing your experience, it'll definitely help other newcomers like me who are going through this for the first time. The tip about keeping snacks handy made me chuckle 😄

Great thread everyone! As someone who's been helping small business owners with IRS matters for years, I'd just add a couple of quick tips: 1) If you're calling during tax season (Jan-April), expect much longer hold times - try calling in the summer or fall if possible, 2) Make sure your business name matches exactly what's on file with the IRS when you call, even small differences can cause verification issues, and 3) Consider updating your address with the IRS before you actually move if you know the date - they can put a future effective date on the change. This prevents any mail from getting lost during the transition period. Hope this helps!

This is such valuable advice, especially about timing the call outside of tax season! I'm planning to move my business next month and had no idea you could set up a future effective date. That's going to save me so much potential hassle with mail getting lost. Thanks for sharing your expertise - it's really helpful to get insights from someone who deals with this stuff professionally!

Just wanted to chime in as someone who recently went through this process! I was really nervous about calling the IRS (who isn't?), but honestly it wasn't as bad as I expected. I called around 2 PM on a Wednesday and only waited about 30 minutes. The agent was surprisingly patient and friendly - she even double-checked everything with me before finalizing the change. One thing I wish I had known beforehand: make sure you have a pen and paper ready to write down the reference number they give you for the address change. The agent mentioned it pretty quickly at the end and I almost missed it. Having that number made me feel a lot more confident that everything was properly documented. Good luck to everyone tackling this - you've got this! 💪

Thanks for sharing your experience! It's really reassuring to hear that the IRS agents can actually be helpful and patient. I've been putting off making this call for weeks because I was so worried about it being a nightmare. The tip about having pen and paper ready for the reference number is gold - I definitely would have forgotten to write that down in the moment. Your post just gave me the confidence boost I needed to finally make the call tomorrow! 🙏

As a freelancer who just went through this exact process last week, I can confirm that calling is definitely the way to go! I was dreading it but ended up getting through in about 35 minutes on a Tuesday morning. The agent was super helpful and walked me through everything step by step. One thing I'd recommend that I don't think anyone mentioned yet - if you have any business mail forwarding set up with USPS, make sure to coordinate the timing. I updated my address with the IRS first, but forgot to set up mail forwarding until a few days later. Luckily nothing got lost, but it could have been a problem if any important IRS notices came during that gap. Also, for anyone who's anxious about the call like I was - the agents are used to helping people with address changes, it's a routine request for them. Don't stress too much about it! You'll be done before you know it.

That's such a good point about coordinating with USPS mail forwarding! I would have totally overlooked that timing issue. It's one of those things that seems obvious once someone mentions it, but easy to miss when you're focused on just getting the IRS part done. Thanks for the heads up - I'll make sure to get my mail forwarding sorted out before I make the call to update my EIN address. Really appreciate you sharing the practical details from your recent experience!

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who shared their experiences here! As someone who was completely lost about this process when I first posted, this thread has been incredibly helpful. I'm planning to make the call next week and feel so much more prepared now thanks to all the detailed advice and real experiences you've all shared. Special shoutout to everyone who mentioned the practical tips like having snacks ready for the hold time, writing down the reference number, coordinating with USPS mail forwarding, and calling outside of tax season when possible. These are the kinds of details you don't think about until someone who's been through it mentions them! It's really reassuring to hear that the IRS agents are generally helpful with this process and that it's more routine than scary. You've all definitely helped calm my nerves about making that call. I'll report back once I get it done in case my experience adds anything useful for future first-timers! 🙏
