Need to change address with IRS and set up payment plan - any recent experiences?

Hey everyone, I need to change my address with the IRS and set up a payment plan. Has anyone gone through this process recently? Any tips or advice would be appreciated. I'm not sure where to start or what documents I might need.

I just went through this last month. It's actually not too bad if you follow these steps: 1. Change your address first. You can do this online through the IRS website or by mailing Form 8822. 2. For the payment plan, go to the IRS website and look for the Online Payment Agreement application. You'll need your tax return info and bank details. 3. Have your most recent tax return handy. They'll ask for info from it. 4. Be prepared to provide your monthly income and expenses. 5. Choose between a short-term plan (180 days or less) or long-term plan. 6. Set up automatic payments if you can. It makes life easier. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

This is super helpful, thanks for sharing! Do you know if there's a fee for setting up the payment plan?

Yes, there is a fee. It's $31 if you set up direct debit for a long-term plan online. It's higher if you don't use direct debit or if you set it up by phone, mail, or in-person. Short-term plans are free if you pay by check or money order.

Quick question - how long did the whole process take you? I'm trying to gauge how much time I need to set aside for this.

It took me about an hour to gather all the info and fill out the forms online. The address change was quick, maybe 10 minutes. The payment plan took longer because I had to input more financial details.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the link: https://claimyr.com/?ref=rdt

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

I was skeptical at first too, but it really worked for me. Saved me hours of hold time.

How long did it take for them to get someone on the line?

It took about 2 hours, but I didn't have to be on the phone that whole time. They called me when an agent was ready.

make sure you keep ALL your documentation. The IRS lost my address change form last year and tried to say I never submitted it. What a clusterfck that was to sort out 🤬

omg same thing happened to me! took months to fix 😭

Has anyone tried using a tax professional for this kind of thing? I'm wondering if it's worth the extra cost to have someone handle it all for me.

I used a CPA last year when I had to do something similar. It was pricey (about $300) but honestly, the peace of mind was worth it. They handled everything and I didn't have to stress about making mistakes.

I'm an accountant (not a CPA tho) and I'd say for most people, this is something you can handle on your own. Save the money unless your situation is really complicated.

Pro tip: if you're setting up a payment plan, try to pay as much as you can upfront. It'll reduce the amount of interest and penalties you'll pay over time.

Anyone else feel like the IRS website is stuck in 1995? 🤣 Trying to navigate that thing is like trying to sail a boat made of cheese lol

Just a heads up, changing your address with the IRS doesn't automatically update it for other gov agencies. Make sure you also update with Social Security, your state tax agency, etc.

idk if this helps but I found some good info on the taxpayer advocate service website. they have guides for stuff like this and can sometimes help if you run into issues with the IRS

The Taxpayer Advocate Service is legit. They helped me resolve an issue last year when I couldn't get anywhere with the regular IRS channels.
