Need help setting up IRS payment plan for 2024 taxes - monthly payments?
Hey everyone, I need some advice on setting up a payment plan for my 2024 tax return. I'm thinking about doing monthly payments, but I'm not sure where to start. Has anyone gone through this process before? What should I expect when I talk to the IRS about it? Any tips or things I should watch out for?

I've been through this before. Here's what you need to know: • Gather all your tax return documents and any notices from the IRS before you call. • Have an idea of how much you can afford to pay monthly. • Ask about fees and interest - they'll usually charge you for setting up the plan. • Consider when you want to start making payments. • Be prepared to discuss your financial situation. When you talk to them, be polite but firm. They can be pretty reasonable if you show you're trying to cooperate. Good luck!

•This is really helpful, thanks! Do you remember how long the whole process took?

•It took me about an hour on the phone, but the actual setup was pretty quick once I got through to someone. Just be patient!

•Did they ask for any specific financial info? Like bank statements or pay stubs?

•They didn't ask me for any documents, but they did want to know my monthly income and expenses. It might be different for everyone tho

•I found a way to get through! There's this site called claimyr.com that has a calling tool. It dials the IRS, stays on hold, and then connects you when a real person picks up. It costs $20, but it saved me hours of frustration. Here's the link: https://claimyr.com/?ref=rdt

•Not a scam, promise! They don't ask for any personal info, just your phone number to forward the call. You can look up reviews online if you're worried.

Pro tip: if you owe less than $50,000, you can set up a payment plan online without even calling. Saves so much time!

•I think it depends on how much you owe total. When I did it, they wanted me to pay it off within 72 months max.

•72 months?! 😱 Thats like... 6 years! Guess I better start saving up lol

Just remember, even if you're on a payment plan, you still need to file and pay your taxes for the current year on time. Learned that the hard way 🤦♂️

•They cancelled my payment plan and I had to start all over again. Plus extra fees. It was a whole thing 😫

Has anyone tried negotiating the amount they owe? I've heard you can sometimes get it reduced.

•That's called an Offer in Compromise. It's a whole different process and pretty complicated. Might want to talk to a tax professional about that one.

•Ah gotcha, thanks for the info! Might look into that if the payment plan doesn't work out.

PSA: Watch out for scammers claiming to be from the IRS! They'll never call you out of the blue demanding payment.
