Got Code 746 for 2023 Return but Still Waiting on 2022 Amended Refund - Filed in November
Just got a 746 code for my 2023 return, so that's moving along. But I'm still waiting on my amended refund for 2022 that I filed back in November. I can see it was processed in the system, but no refund yet. Anyone else dealing with amended returns right now? What's the typical timeframe for these amended refund payments to be released? I need to plan my business cash flow and this uncertainty is making it difficult.

Here's what you need to know about amended returns: Step 1: Amended returns typically take 16-20 weeks for processing, not counting any backlog delays. Step 2: The "processed" status you're seeing likely means it completed review, but is now in the refund queue. Step 3: The 746 code on your 2023 return is completely separate from your amended return processing. Step 4: If you filed in November 2023, you're approaching the outer window of normal processing time, but still within reasonable range. Step 5: Current amended returns are facing additional delays due to the IRS working through their backlog from previous years. I'm actually surprised you can already see it was processed - that's faster than many are experiencing right now.

Wow, thx for breaking it down so clearly! Was trying to figure this out for my mom's amended return too. She filed hers in Oct and still waiting. Def gonna share this w/ her!

This is helpful but I'm still confused about a few things: ā¢ Does "processed" mean they've approved the changes? ā¢ Is there a way to see if they adjusted the amount? ā¢ Do they send a letter before the refund? ā¢ What's the next status after "processed"? Frustrating that it's so unclear what stage we're actually in.

I see the 746 code mentioned but what exactly does that mean for the current year return? Is there any connection between how they process your current year and amended returns from previous years? I've heard they sometimes hold current year refunds if you have an amended return in process.

The interplay between IRTF and IRTF-AM processing pipelines is important here. When an amended return shows as processed, it's completed the substantiation phase but may still be queued in the disbursement system. Your 746 code indicates a refund hold was released on your current year return, which operates on an entirely separate processing track from your 1040-X.

I was in a somewhat similar situation last year with my amended return. It might be worth checking out https://taxr.ai to analyze your transcript. The tool was pretty helpful in my case, as it explained what each code meant and gave me a better idea of the timeline. From what I understand, amended returns can take anywhere from 16 weeks to, unfortunately, several months in some cases. The system flagged mine for additional review, which added about 8 more weeks to the process.

Is that service really accurate though? I'm hesitant to use another tool when the IRS information is already so confusing. Did it actually predict your timeline correctly or just give general information you could find elsewhere?

Does taxr.ai work specifically for amended return transcripts? I've been trying to decode my transcript but the amended section looks completely different from regular transcripts. Are there specific codes I should be looking for that would indicate when my refund might be issued?

I've been staring at my transcript trying to make sense of it for weeks! Does this tool explain the difference between TC 971 and TC 290 codes? And maybe even throw in a joke about how the IRS makes everything as clear as mud? š Seriously though, do you remember if it helped specifically with amended return timelines?

I waited 7 months for mine. Called IRS repeatedly. No help. Finally used Claimyr. Got through in 15 minutes. Agent fixed it right away. Refund came next week. Worth every penny. https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

I wonder if this is really any different than just calling the IRS directly? Couldn't you accomplish the same thing by calling early in the morning when their lines first open, or is there something I'm missing about how this service actually works compared to standard methods?

I called the IRS on April 2nd at exactly 7:00am ET using the regular number and still waited 1 hour and 47 minutes. The amended return department has different hours (8:00am-6:00pm) and different staffing levels than the regular customer service line. This service likely connects you to the right department directly.

Thanks for sharing your experience. That's actually really helpful to know. Did the agent tell you why your amended return was held up for so long? Was there something specific they had to fix, or was it just stuck in the queue?

I had almost the exact same experience! My amended return from 2021 sat for 9 months with no movement. I spent hours on hold over multiple days trying to reach someone. Finally used Claimyr in January, got through in about 25 minutes, and the agent found that my return was complete but had never been released for payment. Got my refund direct deposited 8 days later. Sometimes they just need a nudge to look at your file.

I'm seeing a pattern with amended returns filed in Q4 2023. Have you checked your account transcript for any TC 570 or TC 971 codes? These would indicate a hold on your account. What specific processing stage does your Where's My Amended Return tool show? Has there been any correspondence from the IRS regarding your amended return?

I don't think amended returns are really being processed right now!!! I filed mine in AUGUST and still nothing!!! The IRS is just saying whatever to keep us quiet. My friend filed hers after me and got her refund already. The whole system is rigged and depends on who processes your return!! š”š”š”

According to the IRS operations page (https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-operations), they're currently processing amended returns filed as of October 2023. Your November filing is very close to the current processing date. The Where's My Amended Return tool on IRS.gov should show your current status, though it only updates weekly. I'd caution against assuming there's a problem just yet, but if you're approaching 20 weeks, it might be worth making contact.

I've been checking the Where's My Amended Return tool, but it just says "received" even though my transcript shows it was processed. Why would there be this discrepancy between the two systems?

Is there any way to tell from the transcript if they've approved the full amount I claimed on the amended return? I'm wondering if maybe they adjusted it down and that's causing additional processing time.

My amended return shows processed too. Been waiting 5 months. Called twice. No help. Just told to wait. Is there a specific department to ask for when calling?

The WMAR tool and transcript systems pull from different databases that don't always sync in real-time. Have you received any notices via mail? CP21B or CP25 would indicate they've completed processing and are preparing to issue a refund.

Have you considered what "processed" actually means in the IRS system? It doesn't necessarily mean your refund is approved and ready to be sent. It could simply mean they've entered your information into their system, right? The real question is whether they've approved the changes you requested in your amendment. Have you received any correspondence from them about your amended return? Did they request any additional information?

I filed an amended return last year in February and didn't get my refund until December! It was absolute torture waiting that long. I called every month starting at month 4 and kept getting told different things. First it was "still processing," then "in review," then "approved but waiting for payment." I finally got a helpful agent who put a note on my account to expedite it. Three weeks later, the money appeared in my account. No notice, no explanation for the delay, nothing.

Great news! My amended return from January finally came through last week. It's like waiting for a train that has no schedule - you know it'll eventually arrive, but you have no idea when! What worked for me was calling the dedicated amended return hotline (866-464-2050) and speaking to a representative who confirmed my return was approved but stuck in the final verification queue. They flagged it for immediate review, and I received my direct deposit 9 days later. Don't give up hope!
