IRS Delays: Waiting on 2023 Amended Return & 2024 Refund Status - Any Tips?

Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle with my taxes. I filed an amended return for 2023 and I'm still waiting to hear back about it. On top of that, I've already filed my 2024 taxes and I'm curious about the status of that refund too. Anyone else dealing with multiple tax years at once? Any tips on how to check on these things or how long I should expect to wait?

Ugh, dealing with the IRS is always a headache. For your 2023 amended return, it can take up to 16 weeks for processing. As for 2024, have you tried using the "Where's My Refund?" tool on the IRS website? It usually updates within 24 hours after you e-file.

Thanks for the info! I've been checking "Where's My Refund?" daily, but it still says processing. Guess I'll just have to be patient 😩

16 weeks?! That's insane. The government sure takes its sweet time when it comes to giving us OUR money back 🙄

Tell me about it! It's like they forget it's our money to begin with. But hang in there, OP. It'll come through eventually.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the link: https://www.claimyr.com

Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work? $20 seems steep just to make a phone call.

I was skeptical at first too, but it actually worked for me. Saved me hours of hold time. Worth it if you're desperate to talk to someone.

Idk man, seems kinda sketchy. Has anyone else tried this?

I get the skepticism, but it's legit. They even have reviews on their site. It's not a magic solution, but it does what it says - gets you through to an agent without the wait.

Listen up, folks! 🗣️ Here's the deal with amended returns and refunds: 1. Amended returns (2023): - Can take up to 16 weeks to process - Check status on "Where's My Amended Return?" tool - Be patient, it's a manual process 2. Current year refunds (2024): - Usually processed within 21 days for e-filed returns - Use "Where's My Refund?" tool for updates - If it's been over 21 days, you might need to contact IRS 3. Tips: - Double-check all info is correct - If you owe money from previous years, current refund might be applied to that debt - Consider setting up an online account with IRS for more detailed info Hope this helps! Remember, patience is key when dealing with the IRS. 💯

Wow, thanks for breaking it down like that! Super helpful. Guess I'll be playing the waiting game for a while 😅

This should be pinned at the top of the subreddit tbh. So many people asking the same questions over and over.

am i the only 1 who thinks its ridiculous that we have to jump through all these hoops just to get our own money back??? the system is broken af 🤬

Preach! 🙌 It's like they make it complicated on purpose.

Totally agree. And don't even get me started on how they can take our money instantly but take forever to give it back. 🙄

Pro tip: If you're really in a bind and need to talk to someone, try calling your local Taxpayer Advocate Service. They can sometimes help push things along or at least give you more info.

Anyone else notice how the IRS seems to be even slower this year? I filed in February and I'm still waiting on my refund. Starting to wonder if it got lost in the system or something.

Same boat here. Filed early March and still nothing. It's like watching paint dry, but less exciting. 😴

I heard they're understaffed and still dealing with backlogs from the pandemic. Doesn't make the wait any easier tho

Quick question - does anyone know if amending your 2023 return affects the processing of your 2024 refund? I'm in a similar situation as OP and wondering if that might be why my 2024 refund is taking so long.

0 coins

From what I understand, they're processed separately. But if your 2023 amendment results in you owing money, they might apply your 2024 refund to that debt. Not 100% sure tho, maybe someone else can confirm?
