Filed amendment but worried about my refund - transcript shows code 977 and cycle 03
Filed my 2024 taxes back in May but had to submit an amendment in July because my tax preparer missed some business expenses. She told me not to worry and that my original refund would still come through soon. Just checked my transcript online and noticed it says "forwarded for processing" with code 977. Also see I'm cycle 03. What exactly does all this mean for my refund timeline? Will I still get my original refund soon or do I have to wait for the amendment to process first? Getting anxious since I was counting on that money for some home repairs.

Tax professional here. Code 977 means that the IRS has received your amended return and is processing it. This code typically appears when they acknowledge receipt of your amendment. Being cycle 03 means your account updates on the third week of the processing cycle. Your tax preparer is correct - your original refund should still process separately from your amendment. The IRS generally processes the original return first and then handles the amendment as a separate action. The original refund should still come through on its normal timeline (usually 21 days from acceptance if e-filed), while the amendment can take 16-20 weeks to process. I recommend checking your transcripts weekly. Look for code 846 which will indicate your refund has been issued. If you don't see movement in the next 2-3 weeks on your original refund, you might want to contact the IRS directly.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! That's a relief to hear. Do you know if there's any way to check if my original refund is still on track besides waiting for code 846 to appear?

•You can check the Where's My Refund tool on IRS.gov or the IRS2Go app - that should show your original refund status. Just make sure you're using the info from your original return, not the amended one.

I was in a similar situation last year and wasted weeks trying to understand my transcript codes. Ended up using taxr.ai which was honestly a game changer. It translated all the codes and gave me a clear timeline of what was happening with both my original return and amendment. Saved me so much anxiety just knowing exactly what was going on. https://taxr.ai

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•It does WAY more than just read it. It actually explains what each code means specifically for YOUR situation, not just generic definitions. It also gives you a timeline prediction based on your specific case and tells you what actions you might need to take. Saved me from making a mistake that would have delayed things further. Seriously the best tool I've found for dealing with IRS stuff.

•Just tried taxr.ai after seeing this and WOW. Why doesn't the IRS just explain things this clearly?? It showed me exactly why my refund was delayed and what I needed to do. 100% worth it if you're confused by all these random codes and dates!

After banging my head against the wall trying to reach someone at the IRS about my amended return, I finally tried this calling service called Claimyr. Got me through to an actual human at the IRS in about 45 minutes when I'd been trying for WEEKS on my own. The agent was able to confirm my original refund was still being processed separately from my amendment. Definitely worth checking out if you need answers fast - claimyr.com

•Not sketchy at all! They basically navigate the IRS phone system for you and call you back when they get a live agent on the line. I was also skeptical but was desperate after trying for weeks. Talking to a real agent gave me peace of mind about my situation and the agent even expedited my case.

Cycle 03 means your account updates on Thursday nights. I'm cycle 05 and mine updates on weekends. The 977 is just acknowledgment of your amended return. Your original refund should still process normally. From what I've seen on these forums, most people still get their original refund as scheduled with amendments.

The IRS is such a mess right now. I amended in April and STILL haven't gotten anything processed. They're so backlogged from the pandemic. My tax guy said amendments are taking 6+ months in some cases. Good luck!

Just adding a data point - I had code 977 show up in June, got my original refund 9 days later, and the amendment finished processing about 14 weeks after that. So yes, your tax lady is right based on my experience!

Check the Where's My Amended Return tool on the IRS website too. It can sometimes give you more info than just the transcript. But in my experience the tax preparer is right - your original refund should still come through normally.

Yeah I went thru this exact headache last year. The original refund will still come through on its original timeline in most cases. The 977 code is just letting you know they've received your amended return and are beginning to process it. They're separate processes - one doesn't stop the other usually.

I used to work as a tax preparer (not for the IRS). Your tax lady is mostly right, but there's a small chance they could freeze your original refund while processing the amendment. It depends on what you amended. If you're REDUCING your refund with the amendment, they might hold it. If you're INCREASING it, they'll usually send the original amount first, then the additional amount later.

•I'm actually increasing my refund with the amendment - adding some business expenses I forgot about. So that's good news based on what you're saying!

GamerGirl99
•Yep that's typically a good scenario! They'll process your original refund and then you'll get a second, smaller refund later for the additional amount from the amendment. Just keep an eye on your bank account and transcript for that 846 code.

Anyone saying the original refund will "definitely" still come through on time doesn't know what they're talking about. Sometimes amendments trigger a closer look at the original return. HOWEVER, most of the time they do process separately, so you're probably fine. Just pointing out there are no guarantees with the IRS.

•This. The IRS is unpredictable. I've seen both scenarios play out. Most likely you'll get the original refund soon, but there's always a chance they'll freeze everything until the amendment is done.

Lol welcome to the IRS code puzzle game. Cycle 03 = your account updates on the 3rd workday of the week (Wednesday). The 977 code is just acknowledging they got your amendment. I had the exact same situation last year - got my original refund about 2 weeks after the 977 code appeared, then the amendment took another 4 months. The key is patience... so much patience... ðŸ˜

from my own experience with amending, what ur tax preparer told u is accurate. the 977 code is just confirmation they got ur amendment. I still got my original refund about 3.5 weeks after filing, even though I amended like 10 days after filing. the amendment itself took forever tho (like 4 months).

Have you tried calling the IRS directly? You can ask them specifically about your original refund status. Last time I was in this situation I finally broke down and called. Took forever to get through but the agent confirmed my original refund was still processing normally despite the amendment.

I went through almost the exact same situation last year! Filed in April, amended in June for missed deductions, and was freaking out about my refund. The 977 code just means they've acknowledged your amendment - it's actually a good sign that it's in their system. Your tax preparer is right about the original refund processing separately. Mine came through about 2.5 weeks after I saw the 977 code appear. The amendment took much longer (about 18 weeks total) but that second refund was worth the wait. Being cycle 03 means your transcript updates on Wednesdays, so check back then for any changes. Keep an eye out for code 846 which means your refund has been issued. Try not to stress too much - the IRS is slow but they do eventually get there!

•This is really reassuring to hear from someone who went through the same thing! I've been checking my transcript obsessively but didn't realize it only updates on Wednesdays for cycle 03. That explains why I haven't seen any changes lately - I was checking every day! The 977 code is definitely just acknowledgment that they received your amendment - I had the same code appear when I filed my amendment last year. Your tax preparer is correct that the original refund typically processes separately from the amendment. Since you're cycle 03, your transcript will update on Wednesdays, so that's when you'll want to check for any changes. The fact that it shows "forwarded for processing" is actually a good sign that things are moving along normally. In most cases where you're increasing your refund amount (like with missed business expenses), they'll send the original refund first and then process the additional amount from the amendment later. The original refund should still come through on the normal timeline - usually within 21 days of acceptance if you e-filed. Keep checking for code 846 on your transcript which will indicate your refund has been issued. Try not to stress too much about the timeline - I know it's frustrating when you're counting on that money, but the IRS generally does process these things in order even if it feels slow!

•This is super helpful! I'm new to all this tax transcript stuff and was getting really overwhelmed by all the codes. The explanation about cycle 03 updating on Wednesdays makes so much sense - I was checking randomly and getting frustrated when nothing changed. It's reassuring to know that increasing refunds usually get processed as two separate payments. I'll stop checking daily and just look on Wednesdays for that 846 code. Thanks for taking the time to explain this so clearly!

I'm dealing with a very similar situation right now! Filed my 2024 return in March, had to amend it in August for some overlooked charitable deductions. Just saw code 977 appear on my transcript last week and have been worried it might delay my original refund. Reading through all these responses is really helpful - sounds like most people do get their original refund processed separately from the amendment. I'm also cycle 03 so I'll make sure to check my transcript on Wednesdays going forward instead of checking randomly throughout the week. The waiting is definitely the hardest part, especially when you're counting on that money for important expenses like your home repairs. But it seems like the consensus is that your tax preparer gave you good advice. Fingers crossed we both see that 846 code soon!

•Hey, I'm in a really similar boat too! Filed in February, amended in September for some missed medical expenses, and just saw the 977 code pop up on my transcript this week. It's such a relief to see everyone's experiences here - I was starting to panic that the amendment would somehow mess up my original refund. The Wednesday update schedule for cycle 03 is news to me too - I've been obsessively checking every day like a crazy person! 😅 At least now I know when to actually look for changes. Really hoping we all see those 846 codes soon. The stress of not knowing what's happening with your own money is honestly the worst part of this whole process.

•I'm so glad I found this thread! I'm dealing with the exact same thing - filed in May, amended in September for some missed student loan interest deductions, and just saw code 977 appear on my transcript. I had no idea what it meant and was starting to freak out that my original refund was going to be delayed indefinitely. All these responses are giving me so much peace of mind. I especially appreciate learning about the cycle 03 Wednesday update schedule - I've been checking my transcript multiple times a day like an obsessed person! Now I can at least focus my anxiety on one day a week instead of spreading it out over seven days 😂 It's crazy how the IRS makes this process so confusing with all these cryptic codes. Why can't they just send a simple email saying "hey, we got your amendment but your original refund is still processing normally"? Would save us all so much stress! Anyway, here's hoping we all see those 846 codes soon - medical bills and home repairs don't pay themselves!

I've been through this exact scenario multiple times as a tax professional, and your preparer is absolutely correct. The 977 code is just the IRS acknowledging receipt of your amended return - think of it as a digital "we got it" receipt. This code appearing doesn't interfere with your original refund processing. Since you're increasing your refund with business expenses (rather than reducing it), the IRS will almost certainly process your original refund first, then send the additional amount later once the amendment is fully processed. I've seen this pattern consistently with clients. Being cycle 03 means your transcript updates Wednesday evenings, so that's when you'll see any movement. Look for code 846 which indicates refund issued, followed by code 570 if there are any holds (which is unlikely in your case since you're adding deductions). Given that you filed in May and amended in July, your original refund should process within the normal 21-day window from when it was accepted. The amendment will take 16-20 weeks as others mentioned, but that's separate. Keep checking Wednesday evenings and try not to stress - in 15+ years of practice, I've rarely seen straightforward business expense amendments delay original refunds. You should see that 846 code soon!

•This is incredibly reassuring to hear from a tax professional with 15+ years of experience! I've been losing sleep over this whole situation, constantly worried that filing the amendment somehow messed up my original refund. Your explanation about the 977 code being just a "digital receipt" makes so much sense - why doesn't the IRS just call it that instead of using cryptic numbers? The fact that you've consistently seen this pattern with clients who are adding deductions (like my business expenses) gives me so much confidence. I was especially worried because I'd read some horror stories online about amendments causing months-long delays, but it sounds like those might be different situations. I'm definitely going to stop my daily transcript checking obsession and just look on Wednesday evenings now. Knowing what codes to look for (846 for refund issued, 570 for holds) is super helpful too. Thanks for taking the time to share your professional insight - it means a lot to have someone with actual experience confirm what my tax preparer told me. Hopefully I'll see that 846 code soon and can finally relax!

I went through this exact same situation last year and understand how stressful it can be! Filed in June, amended in August for missed business expenses, and saw that 977 code appear on my transcript. I was convinced it meant my refund was frozen or something terrible. Turns out your tax preparer is spot on - the 977 is literally just confirmation they received your amendment. My original refund came through exactly 19 days after filing (despite the amendment being in process) and then I got the additional amount from the amendment about 4 months later. The cycle 03 Wednesday update schedule mentioned by others is accurate too. I learned that the hard way after checking daily for weeks! Now I know to only check Wednesday evenings for any real updates. Since you're adding business expenses (increasing your refund), you're in the best possible scenario. They'll send your original amount first, then the extra later. Keep an eye out for that 846 code and try not to stress too much - I know it's easier said than done when you need that money for home repairs, but the system usually works even if it's slow and confusing!

I've been following tax situations like yours for a while now, and your tax preparer is definitely giving you solid advice. The 977 code is essentially the IRS's way of saying "we got your amendment and it's in the queue" - nothing more scary than that! Since you mentioned you're adding business expenses (increasing your refund), you're in the ideal situation. The IRS almost always processes the original refund first in these cases, then sends the additional amount later. I've seen this play out countless times in forums like this. The cycle 03 Wednesday update schedule that others mentioned is spot on. I'd suggest checking Wednesday evenings rather than daily - it'll save your sanity! Look for code 846 which means your refund is on its way. Given that you filed in May and it's now late February, you should definitely see movement soon on your original refund. The amendment will take its sweet time (16-20 weeks is typical), but that's a separate process. Hang in there - those home repairs will get funded!
