Amended state tax return accepted 2/7, processing date 3/10 - When will I receive $8,832 refund with codes 977 & 971?
So I had to amend my state return because of some code error. It was officially accepted on 2/8. Looking at my transcript today (March 2nd) and I can see the daily processing cycle is happening, but I'm not sure when I should actually expect my refund. Here's what my transcript shows: United States Department of the Treasury This Product Contains Sensitive Taxpayer Data Request Date: 03-02-2025 Response Date: 2025 Account Transcript FORM NUMBER: 1040 TAX PERIOD: Dec. 31, 2024 ACCOUNT BALANCE: 0.00 ACCRUED INTEREST: 0.00 AS OF: Mar. 17, 2025 ACCRUED PENALTY: 0.00 AS OF: Mar. 17, 2025 ACCOUNT BALANCE PLUS ACCRUALS (this is not a payoff amount): -8,932.00 INFORMATION FROM THE RETURN OR AS ADJUSTED EXEMPTIONS: 03 FILING STATUS: Head of Household RETURN DUE DATE OR RETURN RECEIVED DATE (WHICHEVER IS LATER): Apr. 15, 2025 PROCESSING DATE: Mar. 10, 2025 TRANSACTIONS CODE EXPLANATION OF TRANSACTION | CYCLE | DATE | AMOUNT 150 Tax return filed | 20250805 | 03-10-2025 806 W-2 or 1099 withholding | 04-15-2025 971 Amended tax return or claim forwarded for processing | 02-08-2025 | $0.00 977 Amended return filed | 02-08-2025 | $0.00 766 Credit to your account | 04-15-2025 | -$1,300.00 971 Amended/duplicate tax return processed to wrong identifying number or tax P | 202212 768 Earned income credit | 04-16-2025 The transcript shows code 977 "Amended return filed" from 2/8, and also code 971 "Amended tax return or claim forwarded for processing". There's also some credit amount showing -$1,300 with code 766, and it looks like I have an earned income credit listed as well (code 768). I notice my account balance plus accruals shows -$8,932.00, but I'm not sure if that's what I'll be getting or when. I filed as Head of Household with 3 exemptions. The processing date shows as March 10, 2025, but I'm wondering if that means I need to wait until then before anything happens with my refund? Has anyone been through this amended return process? How long should it typically take from acceptance (2/8) to getting the money? I'm especially confused by the second 971 code that mentions "processed to wrong identifying number or tax P" - should I be concerned about that?

Based on your transcript, you've successfully filed an amended return (code 977) on February 7th, 2025. The code 971 confirms your amended return has been forwarded for processing. Code 766 indicates a $1,200 credit to your account which is likely part of your refund amount. Typically, amended returns take 8-12 weeks to process fully, sometimes longer during busy periods. Since your transcript shows a processing date of March 10th, 2025, and credits posted with an effective date of April 15th, 2025, you should expect your refund sometime in April. The cycle code (16211-437-72371-5) indicates you're in the daily processing cycle. Keep monitoring your transcript - when you see code 846 (refund issued), that means your money is on its way. The IRS tool 'Where's My Amended Return' can also provide status updates. The good news is that your amendment is clearly in the system and progressing.

Thanks for the detailed breakdown! Will keep checking for that 846 code. Does the date of April 15th mean I definitely won't see anything before then?

Not necessarily. The April 15th date is just when the credits are officially applied to your account. Your refund could potentially be issued earlier. I've seen cases where refunds came 1-2 weeks after processing completion.

can confirm this is true. mine had a similar situation last year and the refund hit about 10 days before the official credit date on my transcript.

Instead of waiting for the IRS to eventually get around to your case and guessing what all those codes mean, I used taxr.ai and it analyzed my transcript in seconds. It explained exactly what was happening with my amended return, predicted when I'd get my refund, and even highlighted potential issues I wouldn't have noticed. The tool saved me hours of research and anxiety. I literally had every code explained and a timeline for my refund. Seriously check out https://taxr.ai - it's insanely good! I use it every week.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does WAY more than just reading transcripts! You upload your transcript and it explains every single code in plain language, shows exactly where your return is in processing, calculates your expected refund amount, predicts when you'll get paid, and even identifies potential issues that might delay things. It's like having a tax pro but instant and available 24/7. Completely changed my tax season experience.

I just tried it for my amended return and HOLY SHIT this is a game changer!!! Answered every question I had instantly. The timeline feature showing exactly when to expect my refund was worth it alone. Everyone dealing with the IRS needs to know about this tool!

Yep! Amended returns are actually where it really shines since those are so complicated. It detects all the amendment codes and explains the whole process.

After dealing with the same amended return headache (tho mine was back in November), I finally found a way to actually talk to a real human at the IRS. Used an app called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that somehow got me past all the IRS phone system nonsense and connected me with an agent who could actually tell me what was going on. Got a callback within about an hour and the agent was able to confirm my amended return was being processed and when I could expect my refund. Best money ive ever spent after months of being on eternal hold with the IRS!

This sounds like an ad. Does this actually work? I'm desperate but skeptical af

I was super skeptical too! But after spending literally 4 hrs on hold and getting disconnected twice, I was desperate. It actually works - they somehow get you in the priority queue and an agent calls YOU back. I talked to someone named Melissa who explained exactly what was happening with my amendment. My refund showed up 3 weeks later.

can confirm it works. i'd tried calling the irs like 12 times over 2 months and never got through. this thing had an agent calling me back same day. idk how they do it but it saved my sanity.

Since no one's mentioned it - that "Amended/duplicate tax return processed to wrong identifying number or tax P" (code 971 with 202212) might be a concern. Looks like the message got cut off, but could indicate your amendment was processed with incorrect info. Might be worth calling the IRS to check.

I had the exact same situation with my amended state return (MD). Filed in January, accepted 1/12, saw similar codes. Took almost exactly 12 weeks from acceptance to get my refund. So based on my experience, you're looking at early-mid May probably. The IRS moves at the speed of a three-toed sloth swimming through molasses 🤣

Ugh that's what I was afraid of. 12 weeks feels like forever. Did your transcript show an 846 code before you got your money?

Yep! Saw the 846 code about 3 days before the money hit my bank account. Once you see that, you're in the home stretch!

Good luck with that. I spent 3 hours on hold last week only to be told they "couldnt access that information" and to "call back in 30 days" 🤡

The IRS amended return line is 866-464-2050 but I've never gotten through. Just endless holds and disconnects.

That 977 code with the date of 02-07-2025 means they RECEIVED your amended return on that date. The 8-16 week processing clock starts from there. The 971 code means its been forwarded to the appropriate department for processing. You're still early in the process. Don't expect anything until at least mid-April, possibly later.

why did you have to amend your state? I'm in a similar situation and wondering if I need to

Had a coding error that was affecting my credits. The preparer put in something incorrectly that was causing my state return to be processed with the wrong status code. Didn't affect my federal though.

I swear the IRS moves at the speed of continental drift. My amended return from LAST YEAR is still processing. And they wonder why people get frustrated with the system. 🙄

DAILY CYCLE GANG! 🙌 Best cycle to be on! I've found refunds typically come faster on daily vs weekly. Last year my amended took 67 days exactly from acceptance to 846 code. Daily cycle gang for life.

I work with taxes and just a heads up - that $1,200 credit (code 766) might not be your full refund amount. Your transcript shows -$8,832.00 account balance, so that could potentially be your total refund when everything processes. Just something to keep in mind.

Wait so the -$8,832 could be my total refund? That seems like a lot more than I was expecting!

It's possible, especially with an amended return that might have included additional credits (like that EIC code 768 I see there). But don't count on it until you see the official 846 refund issued code. Sometimes that balance includes multiple tax years or pending adjustments.

honestly I was in the exact same boat last month and finally just gave up on trying to decipher those stupid codes and used taxr.ai and it was so much easier than trying to be a detective. It told me my exact refund amount and when it would hit based on my transcript codes. not sure what I would have done without it tbh. https://taxr.ai saved me so much stress

Not to discourage you, but my amended return from last year took 13 months to process. The IRS is so backed up its ridiculous.

Tried calling probably 30+ times. Either couldn't get through or was told "it's still processing" and to just keep waiting. Only thing that finally worked was contacting my congressman's office who has a taxpayer advocate. That got things moving.

Looking at your transcript, you also have code 768 for Earned Income Credit. Your amendment might have affected that, which is good news since that's refundable. Make sure when you do get your refund that it includes everything you're entitled to.

After waiting 4 months for my amended return, I finally used claimyr.com to get through to an actual IRS agent. The lady on the phone was able to pull up my file and explain exactly why my amendment was taking so long (a form was missing) and what I needed to do. My refund was released 2 weeks later after I faxed in the missing form. Talking to a live agent was the only thing that finally got it resolved!

What forms did they say were missing? I'm wondering if I might have the same issue

In my case it was Form 8962 (Premium Tax Credit form). I had included it with my original return but somehow it didn't get attached to my amended return. Every situation is different tho - that's why talking to an agent was so helpful, they could see exactly what was missing in my specific case.

Side note but why are tax transcripts designed to be completely incomprehensible to normal humans? Like they deliberately use the most cryptic codes and abbreviations possible 🤔

Because the IRS wants us to suffer 😂 If we could easily understand what was happening, we might actually get our money faster!

Unrelated but does anybody have experience with getting refunds on EIC when amending? My returns just got accepted with a similar code but I'm concerned about the EIC processing time.
