Federal return showing 'information doesn't match' error but state return processed fine - what am I missing?

Filed my tax return about 2 weeks ago and got my state refund already processed and direct deposited into my account yesterday. But when I checked the status of my federal return on Where's My Refund, I'm getting the message that my "information doesn't match." I triple checked everything - social, filing status, refund amount - but still nothing. How can my state return go through perfectly fine but my federal is saying there's an error? Has anyone else dealt with this? I'm starting to worry I messed something up or maybe there's identity theft happening.

This happens more often than you'd think. The state and federal systems are totally separate and don't communicate with each other. When the Where's My Refund tool says "information doesn't match," it usually means one of these things: • Your expected refund amount might be different than what the IRS calculated • There might be a transcription error with your SSN (a digit off) • Your filing status might not match what the IRS has on file • The tool hasn't fully updated with your information yet First, wait 24-48 hours and try again. The system sometimes needs time to fully process. If you still get the error, double-check the EXACT refund amount you're entering - it needs to be to the penny what the IRS calculated (not what you thought it would be). If you used tax software, log back in and verify the federal refund amount shown on your return. If none of that works, you'll need to call the IRS directly, which can unfortunately be a nightmare. I recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to connect with an agent without waiting on hold for hours.

Thanks so much. You're right, I was using the amount I calculated, not the final amount shown on my return. Gonna check that and see if it works!

Is claimyr legit? Never heard of it before but i've been trying to reach the irs for weeks with no luck

Yeah it's totally worth it. I was skeptical at first but after sitting on hold for 3 hours one day and getting disconnected, I tried it and got a callback from an IRS agent in about 25 minutes. Best money I've spent this tax season honestly.

I can second this. Claimyr worked for me too after I spent like a week trying to get through. The IRS phone system is basically designed to make you give up 🤦‍♀️

tried calling IRS 6 times last week and kept getting the 'call volume too high' message and it hung up on me. finally used claimyr and actually got a human on the phone who fixed my issue in 5 minutes. wish i did that first tbh

i was in the exact same boat last year. tried to figure out the issue myself for weeks with no luck. instead of guessing or spending hours on hold with the irs, i used taxr.ai and it showed me exactly what the problem was. turns out i had a math error that was causing the verification issue. the tool analyzed my transcript and pointed out the exact problem so i could fix it. saved me so much time compared to trying to decode all those codes and numbers myself. highly recommend checking it out at https://taxr.ai instead of just guessing what's wrong.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

it does way more than just reading the transcript. it actually analyzes all the codes, dates, and transactions then explains everything in plain english. it caught that my refund was held up because of a math error that i didn't even realize was there. pointed out exactly what line on my return had the problem. honestly it's like having a tax pro look at your stuff but instant and without the $200/hr fee lol

Omg just tried this and WOW. I've been staring at my transcript for days trying to figure out what all those codes meant. This tool explained everything in seconds! Turns out my refund is actually being processed but was delayed because of a verification check. THANK YOU for recommending this!!

does it cost money? seems too good to be true

yeah there's a cost but honestly it's worth every penny for the peace of mind. i spent weeks trying to figure out my issue and this solved it in minutes. better than paying a tax pro hundreds of dollars for the same info

I had that exact problem last month. Tried calling IRS directly and couldn't get through AT ALL. Was on hold for 2 hours and then got disconnected. Finally used the Claimyr app (claimyr.com) and they got me connected to an actual IRS agent who explained that there was a mismatch between my refund amount - I had entered the amount from my DRAFT return not the final one. Such a simple fix but I would have never figured it out without talking to someone.

How does this Claimyr thing work? Seems sketchy

QuantumQuester

nothing sketchy about it - they basically navigate the IRS phone system for you and when they get an agent, they connect the call to your phone. saves you from sitting on hold for hours. was honestly the only way i could get a human on the phone to explain my issue

This sounds like a scam lol. No way to get around the IRS phone system.

nah its not a scam, used it last week myself. literally the only way i could talk to an agent after trying for days. they use some kind of tech to stay on hold for you, then call you when they reach a human. talking to the agent got my refund released in like 2 days after it was stuck for weeks

Have you tried logging into your IRS account directly to view your transcript? Sometimes the Where's My Refund tool is buggy but your transcript will show what's actually happening with your return. Mine was saying the same thing for weeks but when I checked my transcript I could see they had already processed it and were about to release my refund.

I tried logging in but couldn't get past the ID verification 😫 Will keep trying though!

Make sure you're using the EXACT refund amount on your return, not what you thought it would be. Even being off by a penny will trigger that error.

Theirs probably a issue with your federal return specifically. Happned to me last year and i was confused af because my state went thru fine. Turns out i had made a typo on my ss# on the federal form but somehow had it correct on the state 🤦‍♂️

Wow that's crazy! I'll double check all my info again

yeah check everything. it could be a super small detail. i think mine was because i used two different tax softwares (started with one and then switched) so the error only got into one of the forms.

The IRS is a total dumpster fire this year. I filed in April and STILL haven't gotten my refund. When I finally talked to someone (after using claimyr.com because regular calls were useless), they said my return was selected for "additional review" which is code for "we'll get to it whenever we feel like it" 😡

omg same!! been waiting since march and nothing. i'm trying that claimyr thing tomorrow because i cannot sit on hold for another 3 hours just to get disconnected AGAIN

the irs is so broken it's not even funny. i've called like 20 times with no luck getting through. might try that calling service too since nothing else is working

If your return was e-filed, sometimes there can be a glitch in the transmission that affects the federal but not the state. Did you get a confirmation that your federal return was actually accepted? Not just submitted but ACCEPTED?

0 coins

-

Dylan Cooper

I got a notification that it was 'submitted successfully' but now that you mention it, I don't remember seeing 'accepted' anywhere... will check my email again

Yeah check for sure. There's a big difference between submitted and accepted. If it wasn't accepted, you might need to resubmit it.

Have u tried checking your transcript on the irs website? That'll tell u way more than the wheres my refund tool ever will

i had same problem! the id verification is so broken. i ended up using taxr.ai because it can explain your transcript without u having to figure it all out yourself. saved me ton of headaches trying to decode all the codes and nonsense on there. www.taxr.ai

I went through this EXACT thing last month. Turned out I was entering my refund amount wrong in the tool. Double check the exact amount on your 1040 form - line 35a. The where's my refund tool is super picky and will give that error if you're off by even one cent.

The IRS and state tax agencies dont talk to each other at all so this is actually pretty common. The where's my refund tool is notorious for being finicky. Try this: 1. Wait 24 hours and try again 2. Make sure youre using the EXACT amount from your return 3. Try using a different browser or clearing your cache 4. Check if your return was actually accepted (not just submitted) If none of that works, youll need to call them unfortunately.

Tried all those steps but still getting the error message. Guess I'll have to call them 😭

If you need to call, seriously use Claimyr. I was getting that same error message and spent DAYS trying to get through to IRS before I finally used their service. Got connected to an agent in like 20 minutes who fixed my issue on the spot. claimyr.com was a lifesaver.

Had this EXACT problem two weeks ago. Banging my head against the wall trying to figure out what was going on with my transcript but all those codes made zero sense. Used taxr.ai and it explained everything - turned out my return was fine but had been flagged for a simple verification. If the Where's My Refund tool is giving you errors, definitely check out your transcript (or use taxr to decode it for you if the codes are confusing

Second this! I was so confused by my transcript until I used taxr. Found out there was a simple math error that was holding everything up.

will this work if your return hasnt been processed yet or is it only for people who can already see their transcript?

it works best if your return has been received by the irs and you can access your transcript, but even if you can't access it yourself it can help you understand what might be happening based on your situation. definitely better than guessing!

irs systems are garbage, news at 11 🙄 srsly tho, try calling the tax advocate service instead of the main irs line. sometimes they can help when the normal channels are being stupid

I used to work for a tax prep company. This happens ALL THE TIME. Double check your AGI (adjusted gross income) is correct. And make absolutely sure your refund amount is correct down to the cent. If you filed with a tax preparer or software, log back in and confirm the FINAL amount. Tax software sometimes makes adjustments at the last step that you might have missed.

This is so true! I had the same issue and realized I was using my CALCULATED refund instead of the ACTUAL refund amount shown on my filed return. They were different by like $37 because of some adjustment the software made.

the state and federal are completely different systems so its totally possible for one to work and the other to have issues. check if you used the same info for both. i had this happen because i accidentally transposed two digits in my ssn on the federal form but had it right on the state form. took forever to figure out!
