Weird message when checking federal refund status after getting state notice - any idea what this means?

Just received a notice from my state tax agency last Thursday. Thought I should check on my federal refund status too, but when I went to the Where's My Refund tool on the IRS website, I got this strange message: "We apologize, but your return processing has been delayed beyond the normal timeframe. You can continue to check back here for the most up to date information regarding your refund. We understand your tax refund is important and we are working to process your return as quickly as possible." I filed back in early April 2024 and it was accepted right away. Never got any letters from the IRS, just this message when I checked. Has anyone seen this before or know what it means? My state return was perfectly fine so Im confused about whats happening with my federal.

Tax resolution specialist here. This message is fairly common and doesn't necessarily indicate a serious problem. When you see the "processing has been delayed beyond normal timeframe" message, it typically means one of several things: • Your return was flagged for manual review (could be a simple verification) • There might be a discrepancy the IRS is looking into • The IRS is experiencing high volume processing delays • You claimed certain credits that require additional processing time Since you haven't received any notices requesting additional information, it's most likely just in a processing queue. The state and federal systems are completely separate, so your state return being processed doesn't affect your federal return status. I recommend checking your IRS transcript online if you can access it - this will give you much more specific information about what's happening with your return than the Where's My Refund tool. If it continues for more than 6-8 weeks from filing, you might consider calling the IRS, but be prepared for long wait times.

Thank you! This is really helpful. How do I check my transcript online? Is it through the same IRS site?

0 coins

Yes, go to IRS.gov and search for "Get Transcript Online" - you'll need to create an account if you don't already have one. The account creation process is somewhat strict for security reasons (requires photo ID verification, etc). The transcript will show you exact codes and dates for what's happening with your return.

Just tried and the verification process is really complicated... I'm not sure I can get through it. Is there another way to find out what's going on?

I know this is frustrating. Ive gone threw this before. If you cant access your transcript online, you can also request it by mail, but that takes like 10 days. Or you could call the IRS but thats a nightmare right now with hold times 😫

I had the same issue last month and used taxr.ai to read my transcript. It explained everything and I didn't have to try to figure out all those weird IRS codes on my own. Saved me hours of googling random numbers and trying to figure out what was happening. https://taxr.ai

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll check it out.

Just want to throw this out there - I was in this EXACT situation in May. After weeks of checking and getting nowhere with that vague message, I found taxr.ai and it completely cleared things up for me. I was able to see exactly what was holding up my refund instead of playing the waiting game. They explained all my transcript codes in normal human language and told me when to expect my money. So much better than spending hours going down rabbit holes trying to decode what the IRS is doing. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It does way more than just read the transcript! It analyzes everything, tells you what stage your refund is in, why there are delays, estimates when you'll get paid, and explains all those weird IRS codes in plain English. It even explained a tax adjustment I didn't understand. EVERYONE dealing with IRS issues needs to try this!

is this an ad or somthing? seems to good to be true tbh

0 coins

Not an ad, just sharing what worked for me after weeks of frustration. I was ready to give up before finding it. The peace of mind was worth it.

I used it too. Was skeptical at first but it actually worked really well. Nice to have a clear answer instead of the IRS runaround.

After dealing with this exact message for almost 7 weeks, I finally got through to the IRS by using a calling service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They got me a callback from the IRS within an hour, and the agent explained that my return was being held for a simple verification. Turns out they thought my W-2 income didn't match their records but it was a simple error on their end. The IRS agent released my refund while I was on the phone! Talking to a live person saved me another month of waiting and wondering. Definitely worth checking out if you're stuck in limbo.

0 coins

Wait, there's a way to actually get a human on the phone at the IRS? How much did it cost? I've been trying to reach someone for weeks 😭

0 coins

I don't remember exactly how much but it was the best money I've ever spent considering I was about to lose my mind trying to get through. They basically just wait on hold for you and when they get an agent, they connect you. No more wasting hours listening to that awful hold music!

0 coins

Oh my god thank you. I'm going to try this tomorrow. I've literally called 23 times and always get disconnected after waiting.

0 coins

does this actually work? seems kinda sketchy ngl

0 coins

It's not sketchy at all. They just navigate the IRS phone system and wait on hold so you don't have to. When they get through to an agent, you get a call to connect you. Saved me hours of frustration and my refund got released immediately once I talked to someone.

THANK YOU!!!! I just used this and finally got through after trying for 3 weeks. My refund was on hold for a stupid reason they could have just sent a letter about. Agent fixed it right away! 🙏

Same thing happened to me last year! That message is super common. In my case I had to wait about 9 more weeks after seeing that message before I got my refund. No explanation, no letter, nothing - the money just showed up in my account one day. The system is beyond broken.

0 coins

9 weeks?! That's insane. Did you ever find out why it was delayed?

0 coins

Nope! That's the most frustrating part. Money just appeared one day with no explanation whatsoever. Classic IRS.

That message usually means one of two things: either you claimed certain credits (like Earned Income Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit) that automatically take longer to process, OR there's some kind of mismatch or review happening. Have you checked your transcript? That will tell you way more than the WMR tool.

0 coins

I got that exact message in 2023 and it was due to identity verification. But they never sent me a letter telling me to verify! I only found out when I finally got through to an agent on the phone. Might be worth checking if you need to do ID verification on the IRS website.

0 coins

How do I check if I need to do identity verification?

0 coins

Go to irs.gov and search for identity verification or ID verify. If youre required to verify, you should be able to do it there. But honestly the whole system is so broken, they might not have even flagged it in the system properly 🤡

0 coins

This message usually indicates something is off with your return but not seriously wrong. It could be a simple mismatch they're checking, a math error they're correcting, or even just their system being overloaded. The worst part is the waiting game - u literly have no idea whats happening behind the scenes.

0 coins

I had this EXACT issue and the only way I found out what was going on was by calling the IRS. Turns out they had my address wrong by one number which flagged my account. SO STUPID. Took me 4 hours and 37 calls to finally reach someone tho 😡

0 coins

That's ridiculous! Did they fix it right away once you got through to them?

0 coins

Yeah once I finally got through the agent fixed it in like 2 minutes. Literally could have been resolved with an automated email or something. Got my refund 2 weeks later.

0 coins

Try checking your account transcript on the IRS website. That message is usually a catch-all for about 20 different possible issues, and your transcript will have specific codes that tell you exactly whats happening. Also yeah - state and federal are completely separate systems so one being fine doesn't mean anything for the other unfortunately.

0 coins

I tried creating an account but couldn't get through the verification process. It kept rejecting my ID photo 😔

0 coins

Been there! Their verification system is terrible. You might have better luck with taxr.ai - they can read your transcript for you without going through all that hassle.

0 coins

This is why I always file a paper return. Yeah it takes longer initially but I've NEVER had these weird delays that seem to happen with e-filing. Been doing it for 15 years no problems.

0 coins

Are you serious?? Paper returns take FOREVER to process. My friend filed paper last year and waited 11 months. E-file is still way faster even with delays.

0 coins

Depends on when and how you file. If you file early (February) with a simple return, paper is fine. All these horror stories are from people with complicated situations or who file during peak times. 🤷‍♂️

0 coins

This is literally the worst advice I've ever seen on this sub lmao. The IRS SPECIFICALLY tells people NOT to file paper returns because they have a massive backlog. E-filing is always faster.

0 coins

OMG I LITERALLY GOT THE SAME MESSAGE TODAY!!!! Freaking out a bit. My return was accepted on March 16th and its now July... wtf is taking so long?! 😤

0 coins

Don't stress too much. I got that message last year and still got my refund. It was delayed about 6 weeks beyond the normal timeframe but it did come through. The IRS is seriously understaffed and their computer systems are from the stone age, so delays happen all the time even with perfect returns.

0 coins

Check these things: 1. Did you claim any credits like EIC or ACTC? Those automatically take longer 2. Did you have unemployment in 2023? Those are getting extra scrutiny 3. Did you have any marketplace healthcare? Those reconciliations can cause delays 4. Did you move since filing? Sometimes they send letters to old addresses

0 coins

I did have marketplace healthcare actually. Could that be causing it?

0 coins

Very possibly. The IRS has to match what you reported on Form 8962 with what the marketplace reported. If there's any discrepancy, they have to manually review it. This is super common and usually not a big deal, but does cause delays.

0 coins

i used to work for the irs (not anymore thank god). that message basically means "we're backed up and your return is sitting in a pile somewhere waiting to be looked at." if you haven't received any notices requesting more info, it's probably just in a backlog. the irs is MASSIVELY understaffed and the systems they use are from the 1960s, no joke.

0 coins

Is there anything OP can do to speed things up? Or just wait?

0 coins

honestly just waiting is usually best. calling MIGHT help but you'll spend hours trying to get thru. if it's been more than 8 weeks though, definitely try to call. sometimes a return just needs to be "nudged" in the system.

0 coins

Have you tried calling the IRS? Their customer service is terrible, but sometimes you can get lucky and reach a helpful agent who can tell you exactly what's happening.

0 coins

I tried calling twice but couldn't get through. One time I was on hold for 45 minutes and then got disconnected, and the other time they said call volumes were too high and to try again later 🙄

0 coins

Typical IRS... Try calling right when they open (7am eastern) or use Claimyr.com - they'll wait on hold for you and call when they get an agent. Saved my sanity last year.

0 coins

this happened to my husband and me last year. we got that same message for weeks and then suddenly got a letter saying we had to verify our identity. check the IRS website for identity verification. maybe thats ur issue too

0 coins

whatever you do, DO NOT call the IRS general number. youll be on hold for hours and probably get disconnected. if you need to talk to someone, either use claimyr.com (they'll wait on hold for you) or call your local Taxpayer Advocate Service office.
