WMR App Showing 'Information Does Not Match' Error - What's Going On?

Hi everyone, I filed on February 23rd after finalizing my divorce paperwork, and I've been checking Where's My Refund every few days. Today (April 9th), I suddenly got an error message saying my information doesn't match their records. This is new - it was showing 'processing' until yesterday. I double-checked and entered everything exactly as it appears on my return. I'm trying to understand what this means and if I need to take action. I'm eager to learn what might be happening here since this refund is important for my fresh start.

I've seen this happen a few times in previous filing seasons. Last year, my brother got the same error after his return had been processing for about 3 weeks. In his case, it was because he accidentally transposed two digits in his AGI. Have you tried different combinations of information? Sometimes the system is particular about using exactly what's on your return - like your filing status might need to be 'single' now rather than 'married filing separately' if that's what you used in previous years.

I had this EXACT same issue last month! šŸ˜© Drove me absolutely crazy for days... kept getting the 'info doesn't match' message no matter what I tried. Finally gave up on the app and decided to call the IRS directly. That was its own special kind of hell, lol. After 3 days of constant redialing, I found this service called Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual human at the IRS in about 30 minutes. Turns out there was a simple verification flag on my account that needed clearing. Worth every penny not to spend my life on hold! The agent fixed it right away and my WMR started working the next day.

This happened to me after my divorce last year. Here's what you need to check step-by-step: 1. Make sure you're entering the EXACT amount from line 34 of your 1040 (refund amount) 2. Double-check your filing status is correct for this year 3. Verify you're using your current legal name as it appears on your Social Security card 4. Try entering a slightly rounded refund amount (some people report success with this) 5. Wait 24 hours and try again - sometimes it's just a temporary system glitch In my case, I had to use my maiden name because my Social Security card hadn't been updated yet, even though my tax return had my new name.

The IRS systems are like an old house with weird quirks - you have to know exactly which floorboard creaks and which doorknob needs to be jiggled just right! I had the same issue and it turned out my refund amount was off by ONE dollar because the tax software had rounded differently than the IRS did. Once I used the exact amount from my processed return (not my submitted return), it worked perfectly.

I've seen this resolved in exactly 72 hours for about 85% of the cases where this happens. The IRS database synchronization sometimes lags, especially during peak processing times like mid-April. If you filed on February 23rd and it was showing processing until yesterday, there's a very good chance they're just updating your records and the system will stabilize soon. I wouldn't worry too much unless it persists beyond April 12th.

Have you checked your transcripts? I had this same error message last year, and when I finally got through to the IRS after WEEKS of trying, they told me there was an identity verification issue they needed to resolve. I wish I'd checked my transcripts sooner because there was a letter sent to my old address that I never received. You might want to create an account on the IRS website to check if there are any notices or holds on your account!

I'm... not entirely sure this is a problem yet. Sometimes the WMR tool has temporary glitches, especially during high traffic periods like we're in now. If you want to get a clearer picture, you might want to check your tax transcript instead of relying on WMR. I've found that https://taxr.ai is quite helpful for interpreting what's actually happening with your return. It can analyze your transcript and tell you exactly where your return is in the process and if there are any actual issues to address. This might save you a lot of anxiety if it turns out to be just a temporary WMR glitch.

OMG I've been dealing w/ this exact same thing since last week! šŸ˜« First it said "processing" for like a month, then suddenly "info doesn't match" out of nowhere. I'm freaking out bc I'm worried maybe someone filed fraudulently using my SSN?? Has anyone heard if this could be identity theft? Or is it just the IRS being the IRS? Tbh I'm scared to call them bc what if they tell me something is seriously wrong...

Have you checked if: ā€¢ Your name is EXACTLY as it appears on your Social Security card? ā€¢ You're using the correct filing status for 2023? ā€¢ The refund amount matches LINE FOR LINE with your return? I've noticed many people forget that if they owed money last year but are getting a refund this year, that can sometimes cause verification issues.

It's probably not identity theft, at least in my experience. I had something similar happen, and it turned out that there was just a processing delay that temporarily affected the WMR system. If someone had fraudulently filed using your information, you likely would have received a rejection when you tried to file, rather than having it accepted and then showing this error. That said, it might be worth monitoring your credit report, just to be on the safe side.

This happens a lot more than you'd think. I've seen similar scenarios with several friends this tax season compared to previous years. The IRS systems seem particularly glitchy this April. One friend had this same error for about a week, then suddenly WMR started working again and showed her refund was approved. Another is still getting the error after 2 weeks, but his transcript shows his refund is actually processing normally. I'm slightly worried that with the April 15th deadline approaching, their systems are just overloaded and throwing random errors.

This is typically a Taxpayer Authentication Failure in the WMR interface, not necessarily an issue with your actual return processing. The IRS uses a multi-stage verification algorithm that sometimes gets disrupted during database updates. Try these technical workarounds: 1. Clear your browser cache if using the website version 2. Uninstall and reinstall the app if using mobile 3. Try accessing WMR during off-peak hours (early morning) 4. Use your AGI from line 11 on Form 1040 instead of the refund amount 5. Request an account transcript which will show the actual status regardless of WMR functionality In approximately 60% of cases, this resolves within 72 hours without any action needed.

Thanks for laying this out so clearly. I was getting the same error and your suggestion to use AGI instead of refund amount worked immediately! Wouldn't have thought to try that.

This is spot on. The WMR tool is notoriously unreliable during peak season. I've been working with tax clients for years and always tell them to ignore WMR and go straight to transcripts.

Would this apply even if I'm getting the error on the phone system too? I tried calling the automated refund hotline and got the same information doesn't match message.

Per IRM 21.4.1.3, the WMR application pulls data from the CADE 2 and MeF systems with refresh cycles that can lag by 24-72 hours. Have you verified that you're using the primary taxpayer's SSN if this was a jointly filed return from your previous marriage? According to Reg. Ā§301.6109-1(a)(1)(ii)(B), you must use the SSN of the primary taxpayer listed first on the return.

According to the IRS website (https://www.irs.gov/refunds/tax-season-refund-frequently-asked-questions), this error can happen for several reasons: 1. Information entered doesn't match their records 2. You've checked too many times in a 24-hour period 3. Your return is still being processed 4. There's a system update in progress I'm seeing a lot of posts about this on other forums too. Can anyone confirm if checking too frequently actually causes this error? I've been checking mine daily and wonder if I should stop.
