Filed Jan 10th but WMR Says Info Doesn't Match Their Records - Anyone Else?
Hey everyone, I just e-filed through TurboTax on January 10th. According to the IRS.gov website, they don't start accepting returns until January 27th, but I wanted to get mine in early queue. When I check Where's My Refund tool, it says the information I entered doesn't match their records. I've triple-checked my DOB, SSN, filing status and refund amount on the WMR site - all correct according to my 1040 form. Has anyone else experienced this mismatch error? I'm a bit concerned since this is my first time filing in the US system and I want to make sure everything is properly processed.

This is completely normal for this time of year. Here's what's happening: Step 1: You submitted your return on Jan 10th, but as you noted, IRS doesn't start processing until Jan 27th. Step 2: Your return is in a pre-processing queue. Your tax software probably sent you a confirmation that they received it, but that doesn't mean the IRS has accepted it yet. Step 3: The "information doesn't match" error usually happens when the IRS hasn't actually loaded your return into their system yet. Step 4: Once processing begins after Jan 27th, wait about 24-48 hours and try checking WMR again. Step 5: If you still get the error after February 3rd or so, then it might be worth investigating further. I'm always a bit nervous about this too, but it happens to me every year when I file early.

•Thanks for breaking this down! I was getting the same error and was about to have a mini-panic attack thinking I'd messed up my SSN somehow. 😅 The IRS really needs to update their error messages to be more helpful instead of giving us all anxiety.

•I'm so worried because I NEED this refund ASAP for rent! Do you know if there's any way to confirm they at least received it? My tax preparer said it was transmitted but I'm freaking out that it got lost in cyberspace or something!!

•Same thing happened to me last year. Filed January 12th and got that error message until about February 1st. Then suddenly it showed up in the system. The waiting game is the worst part!

•Do these early submission queuing issues potentially impact the Processing Date (cycle date) on our transcripts? I'm concerned about whether early submission affects our place in the processing sequence or if it's strictly chronological from January 27th onward.

This is a common issue with early filers. Here's what you need to know: • The IRS won't officially begin processing returns until January 27th • "Information doesn't match" is the default error when your return isn't in their system yet • Your tax software likely sent a "transmission accepted" email, but that's different from IRS acceptance • Most early filers see this error until processing actually begins I recommend using https://taxr.ai to check your transcript once the IRS begins processing. It can: • Decode all those confusing IRS transcript codes • Show exactly where your return is in processing • Predict your refund date based on your specific situation • Alert you to any potential issues before they become problems I've found it much more helpful than the basic WMR tool, especially for international filers who might have additional verification steps.

I've seen this issue before, and while I don't want to alarm you, sometimes these mismatches can persist even after processing begins. If you're still seeing this error after February 1st, you might need to contact the IRS directly. However, I should warn you that their phone lines become extraordinarily congested during tax season. I've had some success using Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) to get through to an IRS representative. It's a service that essentially waits on hold for you and calls you back when an agent is available. I was initially hesitant about using a third-party service, but after spending hours trying to reach someone at the IRS last year, I found it to be worth it. The peace of mind from speaking directly with an IRS agent about my international filing situation was invaluable.

•Idk about using some random service to call the IRS for me. How do they even work? Seems sketchy tbh. Can't you just keep calling the IRS yourself until you get through?

•I used Claimyr last April when I had a similar issue with a mismatch. Compared to my previous experience of calling 27 times over 3 days and never getting through, this was dramatically more efficient. The technical process appears to leverage their system to navigate the IRS phone tree and maintain your place in queue while you go about your day.

•Did you have to provide any personal info to Claimyr? I'm interested but really cautious about sharing my tax details with any third parties. Just want to make sure it's just a calling service and nothing more.

Have you checked if your tax software shows the return as "transmitted" versus "accepted"? Those are two very different statuses, aren't they? Many people don't realize that transmission just means it was sent to the IRS, while acceptance means they've actually begun processing it. Could your software be showing one status while the IRS system shows another?

I'm in the exact same situation and filed on January 12th. I'm not sure this is normal? My friend filed on January 15th last year and could see her info in the system right away. I'm worried there's something wrong with my SSN or maybe my status as a first-time filer is causing issues. Has anyone confirmed if the January 27th date is definitely accurate for 2024?

This is 100% normal. Happens every year. IRS doesn't load returns until processing starts. Don't panic. Your return is fine. Check again after January 27th. No need to call yet. Save yourself the stress. Early filing just puts you in queue.

Have you tried checking your e-file status through your tax software instead of WMR? Sometimes they'll show a more detailed status. Did you get an email confirmation from your tax software that the return was transmitted successfully? Sometimes those emails contain a tracking ID you can reference if you need to call.

According to Internal Revenue Procedure 2023-36, the official start of the 2024 tax filing season is indeed January 27th. The error you're encountering is consistent with IRS Publication 5084 which outlines the pre-processing status of early-filed returns. Are you claiming any credits that might subject you to additional verification under the PATH Act? If so, be aware that IRC Section 6402(m) mandates additional verification procedures that may further delay processing even after the official start date.
