WMR Says 'Information Incorrect' After Return Accepted - What's Going On?
According to TurboTax, my return was accepted on February 22nd, but I'm having issues checking my refund status. When I go to the IRS Where's My Refund tool (https://www.irs.gov/refunds), it keeps saying my information is incorrect, even though nothing has changed. I've triple-checked all the details I'm entering - SSN, filing status, and exact refund amount ($3,247) from my accepted return. I've also tried the IRS2Go app with the same result. My mortgage interest deduction was properly documented, and I don't have any outstanding tax issues from previous years. The acceptance confirmation shows everything should be processing normally. Has anyone experienced this disconnect between an accepted return and WMR not recognizing your information? I'm concerned about potential processing delays since I need this refund for some home repairs.

This happened to me YESTERDAY and I nearly had a heart attack thinking my identity was stolen! The WMR tool is notoriously buggy compared to last year's version. If your return was accepted, that's what really matters - the acceptance means it's in their system. The WMR tool is just struggling to match your info to their database, which happens a LOT during peak season (like right now). If you filed 2/22, you're only about 3-4 weeks in, and the IRS is currently taking 4-6 weeks for even basic returns. My sister filed 1/29 and just got her deposit yesterday - almost 7 weeks later! You need to try checking your actual tax transcript instead of using WMR.

ā¢I'm experiencing the same issue... do you think it's worth calling the IRS about this, or should I just wait it out? I'm a bit hesitant to call since I know their phone lines are probably swamped right now.

ā¢So if the WMR tool says my information is incorrect but I know I'm entering everything right, does that mean my return is still in some early processing stage? š I filed on 2/15 and got the acceptance confirmation, but WMR has been giving me this error for two weeks now.

ā¢Has anyone confirmed if this is: ⢠A known issue with the WMR system? ⢠Something that resolves itself after a certain processing stage? ⢠An indication of potential review of your return? Just trying to understand if I should be concerned or just patient...

I've dealt with this exact issue before. Here's what you need to do: 1. First, verify you're entering the EXACT refund amount from your return, not what you expect after any offsets 2. Try accessing your tax transcript directly at https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript 3. If your transcript shows "No record of return filed" that's actually normal at this stage 4. Wait at least 21 days from acceptance date before taking further action 5. If you still get the error after 21 days, try checking your transcript for any codes 6. Only contact the IRS after 21 days have passed AND your transcript shows processing codes This is extremely common during the February-April rush period. Last year my WMR showed incorrect info for 3 weeks then suddenly updated with my direct deposit date.

ā¢Thx for laying this out so clearly! I've been stressing bc my WMR has been saying incorrect info for like 17 days now. Gonna check my transcript instead. Def gonna bookmark your comment for reference.

ā¢When you say verify the "exact refund amount" - does that include cents? I've been rounding to the nearest dollar when checking WMR. Could that be why it's not recognizing my information?

ā¢According to IRS Publication 5136, the WMR tool updates once daily (usually overnight). Is there any benefit to checking multiple times per day, or is that just wasting time? I've been checking every morning and evening hoping for a change.

This is a known issue with the IRS Refund Status API integration that affects approximately 15-20% of filers during peak processing periods. The Refund Status Database (RSD) sometimes lags behind the Return Processing Pipeline (RPP), creating a temporary mismatch in their verification systems. Your return is almost certainly still processing normally. The acceptance confirmation is proof that your return has successfully entered the IRS processing queue. The "information incorrect" message is NOT indicative of identity theft or processing errors in most cases - it's simply that your return hasn't fully populated across all IRS internal systems yet.

I had this exact problem on March 7th last year and again on February 19th this year. Both times my refund was processing normally despite WMR not recognizing my information. After waiting on hold for 2+ hours with the IRS, I discovered Claimyr.com which connected me to an agent in about 15 minutes. The agent confirmed my return was processing normally and that the WMR error was just a system issue. Saved me hours of stress and redial attempts! You can check them out here: https://www.claimyr.com

I'm seeing a lot of recommendations for paid services here. Has anyone tried just using the IRS's official transcript system at https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript instead? I'm concerned about sharing my tax information with third-party services when the IRS provides free tools. Couldn't you just check your transcript to see if your return is actually being processed despite the WMR error?

I work with tax returns professionally and see this issue in exactly 22% of my clients' returns this season. The WMR tool requires your information to be in a specific database that's separate from the acceptance system. Your return is accepted at 2-3 days, moves to the main processing queue at 7-10 days, but might not appear in the WMR database until day 14-21. The fact you received an acceptance means your return is in the system. The WMR error is just a technical hiccup, not a real problem with your return. If you received the exact refund amount of $3,247 in your acceptance, that's proof the system has your return.

ā¢I've been hearing this explanation a lot, but if it's such a common issue, why hasn't the IRS fixed their system? Is there a technical reason why these databases can't sync more efficiently?

ā¢Thank you for explaining this! It's like when my GPS says I've arrived at my destination but I'm still two blocks away. The systems just aren't perfectly synced. Really appreciate the professional insight!

This happened to me last year and I nearly drove myself crazy checking WMR every 3 hours! Turns out my return was processing normally the whole time. The acceptance notice is the real proof your return is in their system. My tax guy explained that the WMR tool pulls from a different database than the acceptance system, and sometimes there's a lag between them. I finally got my refund direct deposited on day 22 even though WMR never worked for me the entire time! The day after my deposit hit, WMR suddenly started working and showed my refund was sent... after I already had the money! The IRS systems don't always talk to each other efficiently.

ā¢Same thing happened to me! WMR showed "information incorrect" for 3 weeks straight, then one morning I woke up to my refund in my account. Checked WMR again out of curiosity and it STILL showed the error message for another 2 days before finally updating to show it was sent. Their systems are definitely not in sync.

ā¢How long did it take between your return being accepted and getting your refund? I'm at day 18 now with the same WMR error message and getting anxious.

Just a warning - I had this same issue last year, ignored it thinking it was just a system glitch, and ended up with a massive headache. Turned out there was a typo in my SSN on my return (my fault) that caused the WMR error. The return was "accepted" because that just means the file format was valid, not that all the information was correct. I'd suggest getting a transcript if possible - if you can access that, your info is correct. If not, there might actually be an issue. I lost 6 weeks thinking it was just a system problem before I finally called and sorted it out. Just sharing so you don't make my mistake!

I'm going through this exact same situation right now! Filed on February 25th, got acceptance confirmation the next day, but WMR has been giving me the "information incorrect" error for over two weeks. I was starting to panic thinking something was wrong with my return. Reading all these responses is actually really reassuring - it sounds like this is way more common than I thought. I've been triple-checking my SSN, filing status, and refund amount ($2,891) but keep getting the same error. I think I'll try accessing my tax transcript like several people suggested instead of obsessing over WMR. It's good to know that the acceptance confirmation is what really matters and that these systems don't always sync up properly. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - definitely helps ease the anxiety!

ā¢I'm in the exact same boat as you! Filed on February 20th and got acceptance confirmation but WMR has been giving me the error for almost 3 weeks now. I was getting really worried until I read through all these comments. It's honestly such a relief to know this is happening to so many people and that the acceptance confirmation is what actually matters. I'm definitely going to check my transcript instead of driving myself crazy with WMR. Thanks for posting - sometimes it just helps to know you're not alone in this! š
