WMR Tool Showing 'Wrong Information' After Initially Tracking - What's Going On?

So what the hell? I filed my 2023 taxes on February 12th and the very next day it was accepted. I was able to track it with the progress bars on Where's My Refund. I just checked it again today and now it's saying wrong information...AGAIN! What the hell is going on??? Can someone please explain this to me? Is this a system glitch or did something happen with my return? Do I need to call the IRS directly to resolve this? My refund is substantial and I need it for some upcoming expenses.

This happened to me last year too. WMR worked fine for about a week then suddenly started giving me the 'information doesn't match' error. I called the IRS after trying different combinations of info (exact amount vs rounded, different status options, etc). Turns out their system was just glitchy during peak processing time. My refund still arrived on schedule despite the WMR errors. Try checking your tax transcript instead - it's more reliable than WMR which seems to break every filing season.

Thanks for sharing this! I've been panicking about the same issue. Good to know it might just be a system thing and not necessarily a problem with my actual return.

Same issue here. Tried different browsers. No luck. Transcript it is.

This is a common Authentication Validation Error in the WMR interface. The IRS database synchronization between their Return Database and the WMR Portal frequently experiences latency issues during peak processing periods. Your return is most likely still in normal processing despite the error message. If you need definitive status confirmation, I'd recommend using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to reach an actual IRS agent. I had the exact same issue and waited on hold for 3.5 hours before giving up, then used Claimyr and got through in 22 minutes. The agent confirmed my return was processing normally despite the WMR error.

Is this service actually worth paying for? The IRS phone lines are free if you're patient enough.

How much does it cost tho? And does it actually work every time? Seems sus that we have to pay to talk to the IRS...

I've had similar experiences with WMR errors compared to what the actual IRS agents tell me. Might be worth trying this service instead of wasting hours on hold.

I used this exact service last week after waiting exactly 2 hours and 47 minutes on hold with the IRS over 3 separate attempts. Got connected in under 30 minutes! Definitely worth it when you need answers quickly.

Be careful about relying too much on WMR. According to the IRS's own documentation at irs.gov/refunds, the tool updates only once every 24 hours (usually overnight) and can experience significant technical issues during peak filing periods. I've seen numerous cases where WMR showed errors while the return was processing normally. I'd suggest checking your tax transcript instead at irs.gov/transcripts as it provides more accurate and detailed information about your return status. In my experience working with clients, many returns that trigger the 'information doesn't match' error are actually just in a processing queue that temporarily disconnects them from the WMR database.

Thank you for explaining this so clearly. I've been stressing about the same issue but this makes me feel better about what's happening.

So is there a specific time I should check the transcript? And will the transcript actually show if there's a problem with my return or just that it's being processed?

I had this exact situation last year. WMR showed errors but transcript updated with a DDD (direct deposit date) about 3 weeks after filing. Got my money right on that date despite WMR never working properly the entire time.

This WMR situation is like having a package tracker that stops working while your package is still moving through the delivery system. I experienced this exact issue in both 2022 and 2023. WMR worked initially then gave me the dreaded "information doesn't match" message for weeks. Meanwhile, my return was processing normally behind the scenes. The IRS systems are like separate islands that don't always communicate well with each other - the processing department and the public-facing tools often don't sync up properly. In both years, my refund arrived via direct deposit without any warning or WMR updates. I'd recommend checking your bank account daily rather than the tool.

I might suggest looking at your tax transcript if you can access it... it tends to be more reliable than WMR in my experience. Last year when I had similar issues, I used taxr.ai to help interpret my transcript. It was actually quite helpful because it explained all the codes and gave me a much clearer picture of what was happening with my return than the WMR tool ever did. I'm not usually one to recommend services, but it really did help me understand where my return was in the process when the standard IRS tools were giving me errors.

The WMR tool is notoriously unreliable during peak filing season. Here's what's likely happening: 1. Your return was accepted into the IRS system initially 2. It moved into a different processing queue 3. The WMR database temporarily lost connection to your return data 4. The system shows "information doesn't match" as a default error This happens to thousands of people every year. It's frustrating but usually not a sign of problems with your actual return. The IRS has multiple internal systems that don't always communicate well with each other. Most returns with this issue still process normally and refunds arrive on time. Just keep checking every few days.

OMG this EXACT thing happened to me last week!!! 😡 I was tracking my refund just fine for about 10 days and then suddenly "information doesn't match" errors! I was freaking out thinking they lost my return or something. I researched extensively and found that the WMR tool has significant technical limitations - it can only handle a certain number of queries before starting to give errors, especially during peak filing season. I waited 4 more days without checking, then tried again with the EXACT same information and it suddenly worked again! My return had progressed to the second bar by then. Sometimes the system just needs a break from being checked too frequently. Try waiting 3-4 days before checking again.
