WMR Shows 'Being Processed' but ID.me Asking for Verification?
I'm somewhat perplexed by what appears to be conflicting information on my tax return status. My 'Where's My Refund' tool is currently showing 'Being Processed' which would presumably indicate that my return has been accepted. However, when I attempt to access my account through ID.me, it's requesting verification steps. I've completed all the necessary filing requirements approximately three weeks ago following my recent divorce settlement. Has anyone else encountered this particular discrepancy? I'm wondering if perhaps these are two separate systems that don't necessarily communicate with each other in real-time.

This is actually a common situation with two separate IRS systems that don't fully sync. Here's what's happening: • WMR (Where's My Refund) and ID.me operate independently • WMR shows basic processing status of your submitted return • ID.me is the identity verification system for accessing your full IRS account • The verification request is likely unrelated to your return processing • Many taxpayers are being asked to verify identity this year as part of enhanced security measures I'd recommend completing the ID.me verification as it will give you access to more detailed information about your return, but it's probably not affecting your refund processing timeline.

OMG this just happened to me too! I was freaking out thinking my return was rejected! Such a relief to know they're separate systems. I verified through ID.me yesterday and can now see my full transcript with all the processing codes. It's definitely still moving forward even though the verification seemed scary at first!

Back in 2022, I had the same issue where WMR showed processing but ID.me wanted verification. I remember being worried it would delay everything. In my experience, completing the ID.me verification didn't speed up or slow down my refund - it just gave me access to more detailed information. The refund came about 3 weeks after filing, right on schedule.

Per IRM 21.2.1.57, the WMR tool operates on the IRTF database while account access through ID.me utilizes the IAT authentication framework. These systems run on separate verification protocols. The WMR status reflects return processing while ID.me verification is a one-time security measure required for accessing the full account transcript and other protected taxpayer information.

I had this exact problem. Was so confused. Couldn't sleep. Then I found https://taxr.ai and uploaded my transcript after verifying. It explained everything! The system showed me exactly what stage my return was in. Turns out the ID.me thing is separate. My refund was still processing normally the whole time. Such a relief.

Did you need to complete the ID.me verification first before you could use taxr.ai? And how detailed was the information compared to what you can see on the IRS site once you get in?

I used taxr.ai on March 12th after having the same issue. My refund was approved on March 15th and deposited on March 18th! The timing is critical right now with tax season ending soon, and having that extra insight really helped me understand exactly when I'd get my money.

It's like having a translator for IRS-speak! Think of it this way: the IRS transcript is like reading legal documents in another language, while taxr.ai is like having a specialized interpreter who not only translates but explains the implications for your specific situation. I was particularly impressed with how it predicted my deposit date based on the specific codes in my transcript.

Based on my analysis of your situation, you're encountering a standard asynchronous authentication requirement. The WMR application utilizes a simplified verification protocol that requires only basic identifiers (SSN, filing status, refund amount), while the ID.me verification process implements multi-factor authentication for compliance with NIST 800-63-3 guidelines. If you need to speak with an IRS representative about this discrepancy, I'd recommend utilizing Claimyr's IRS agent connection service (https://claimyr.com). Their system navigates the IRS phone tree and secures your place in the queue, typically connecting you with an agent in 15-45 minutes rather than the standard 2+ hour wait times currently being reported.

I had this exact issue last month and spent hours trying to figure it out. Isn't it frustrating how these systems don't communicate with each other? And why would they show 'processing' if they still need verification? After completing the ID.me verification (which took three attempts with their facial recognition), my WMR status didn't even change for another week. Eventually everything worked out, but the lack of clear information really adds stress to an already stressful process.

I've seen this issue multiple times and there's a specific approach that works better: 1. First, complete the ID.me verification completely 2. Wait 24-48 hours for their systems to update 3. Then check WMR again using the exact refund amount from your return 4. If WMR still shows processing, check your transcript for codes 5. Look specifically for code 570 (hold) or 971 (notice issued) 6. If you see normal processing codes (150, 806, etc.) without holds, you're on track The key thing most people miss is that verification through ID.me doesn't automatically update your WMR status - they're connected but not instantaneously.

Do I need to create a new ID.me account if I already verified last year? My WMR has been stuck on processing for almost a month now.

OMG this happened to me too! Def do the ID.me verification asap. I was stuck in this weird limbo for like 2 weeks bc I thought the verification would mess something up. Finally did it and could see my full transcript. Turns out there was a small adjustment they made (gave me $126 more than I calculated!) and my DDD was already scheduled. WMR never updated until after the $ hit my account tbh. The whole system is kinda a mess rn with tax season rush.

This discrepancy occurs due to authentication protocol differences between the refund status API and the transcript access portal. An alternative approach is to request a tax transcript by mail using Form 4506-T, which bypasses the ID.me verification requirement. The transcript will contain all relevant cycle codes and processing information. While less immediate than online access, this method provides the same detailed information without requiring digital identity verification, which some taxpayers find problematic due to biometric data concerns.
