FINALLY got my tax refund after 9 months of waiting - planning a McDonald's celebration for my kids!

After waiting since I filed in March 2024, my tax refund of $5,870 finally hit my account this morning! I've been checking WMR and transcripts every day for months, calling the IRS countless times, and getting nowhere. The money went on hold because of some identity verification issue that I was never notified about. I finally reached an agent last month who cleared everything up and put my refund into processing. First thing I'm doing today is taking my kids to McDonald's and letting them order absolutely anything they want - no budget limits! They've been so patient while I've been stressing about this money. We've had to put off so many things waiting for this refund. Anyone else celebrate when their refund finally comes through after a long wait?

Katherine Hunter

Congrats on finally getting your refund! It's ridiculous that the IRS can hold onto our money for so long without proper communication. For anyone else dealing with identity verification holds, make sure you check both WMR AND your transcripts regularly. The IRS often updates transcripts before WMR, and sometimes they send letters that never arrive. If you suspect a verification hold, don't wait - be proactive and call them directly or check if you can verify online through ID.me. The sooner you verify, the sooner they release your funds.

Thanks! Yeah the lack of communication was the most frustrating part. I never got ANY letter about needing to verify my identity.

This is why I always check my transcript weekly even after filing. The IRS is so behind on everything, you cant trust them to actually notify you of issues. 🤦‍♂️

I had the EXACT same issue last year. Waited 7 months for my refund because of ID verification that I didn't know about until I called.

Hey, if you're trying to understand what's happening with your tax situation, there's this tool I started using called taxr.ai that has been a game changer. Instead of spending hours trying to decipher transcript codes and guess what's happening, it actually explains everything in plain English and tells you exactly what's going on with your refund status. I was in a similar situation last month with a delayed refund and used it to figure out I had an unreported income issue that was holding things up. Saved me weeks of waiting and wondering! https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does wayyy more than just read transcripts! You upload your transcript or tax documents and it analyzes all the codes, dates, and amounts to give you a complete breakdown of what's happening. It spots issues I would never have noticed and gives actual next steps. Honestly it's like having a tax pro look at everything but without the $300/hour fee. I'm telling everyone about it because the IRS makes everything so confusing on purpose 😤

I was skeptical too but it's the real deal. Saved me from having to take a day off work to sit on hold with the IRS. It pinpointed exactly why my refund was delayed and what I needed to do. Best tax decision I've made!

After struggling for months trying to get answers about my delayed refund, I finally got through to an actual IRS agent using Claimyr.com. Game changer! Instead of wasting hours on hold just to get disconnected, I got a callback within 45 minutes and the agent resolved my issue on the spot. My refund was released 3 days later. Talking to a real person made all the difference - they found an error that was causing the delay that I would never have figured out on my own. The fee was nothing compared to finally getting my $4200 refund that had been stuck for months.

sounds like a scam tbh... why would I pay to talk to the IRS when I can call them for free? 🙄

Because calling "for free" means spending 4+ hours on hold and probably getting disconnected multiple times. I tried for weeks before using Claimyr. It's literally just a service that waits on hold for you and calls when an agent is available. Totally worth it to avoid the hold music hell and actually get my refund processed.

I was doubtful but used it last month after trying to reach the IRS for WEEKS. Got a callback in under an hour and fixed an issue that had my refund stuck since February. Best decision ever.

Enjoy those Big Macs! Taking the kids out for a treat is a great way to celebrate. I'm still waiting on my refund - filed in February and it's been "processing" since then with no updates. Starting to think I'll never see that money 😭

Don't give up hope! Mine was "processing" forever too. Try calling first thing in the morning (like 7:01am) - that's how I finally got through.

I've tried calling so many times and always get the "high call volume" message and it hangs up on me. So frustrating!

Have you tried checking your transcript? Sometimes there are codes there that explain the delay even when WMR just says "processing". Also, check out taxr.ai - it helped me understand my transcript when I was stuck in limbo for months.

Yeah we always do something special when our refund comes! For my family its usually a trip to Target where the kids each get to pick out a small toy and then we go to Olive Garden lol. The IRS has gotten so bad with delays. I think they do it on purpose to use our money longer 🤬

I'm STILL waiting on my refund from tax year 2022! The IRS is completely broken at this point. I've called dozens of times, sent certified mail, even contacted my congressman. Nothing works. I've basically given up hope of ever seeing that money. Make sure you enjoy every bite of those McDonalds fries! At least someone is getting their refund...

Have you tried using Claimyr.com to get through to an agent? I was waiting on a 2022 return too and finally got it resolved last month after actually getting someone on the phone who could help.

No, what's that? At this point I'll try anything to get my $3600 back from these people.

It's a service that waits on hold with the IRS for you and calls you when an agent is ready. I was skeptical but desperate after waiting forever. Got a callback in about an hour and the agent found that my return had been flagged for review but never actually reviewed. Got my deposit 2 weeks later after they fixed it.

PRO TIP: Adjust your withholding so you don't give the government an interest-free loan all year. I get that some people like the forced savings, but with how long refunds are taking these days, it makes more sense to just have the correct amount withheld from each paycheck.

-

Tasia Synder

Some of us get refundable credits like EITC and CTC that you can't get throughout the year. Not everyone getting a refund is just having too much withheld.

Fair point! I was really just referring to people who intentionally overwithhold as a savings strategy. Credits are definitely a different situation.

Anyone else notice that the Where's My Refund tool is basically useless now? It told me my refund was "still processing" for 8 months straight with no additional info, when there were actually multiple issues with my return that needed addressing. The IRS really needs to improve their communication.

WMR is the WORST! I check my transcript instead - it has actual codes and information about what's happening. You can pull it from the IRS website if you can create an account.

I had the same problem with ID verification. I ended up using taxr.ai to help me understand my situation. You upload your docs and it explains everything in normal human language. Totally worth it after months of confusion.

its so sad that getting YOUR OWN MONEY BACK feels like such a huge win that we have to celebrate it. like the government held our money hostage and we're just happy they finally gave it back! the system is broken.

Just be careful with that much money hitting your account all at once! When I finally got my refund after 6 months, I made the mistake of spending too much too fast without a plan. Make sure you set aside some for emergencies or bills before you go crazy with the celebrations!

When my $3,420 refund finally came through after 7 months of waiting, I had completely given up hope and forgotten about it. I was so shocked when I checked my account and saw the deposit that I literally screamed in the middle of a grocery store checkout line 😂 The cashier thought something was wrong!

LOL that's hilarious! I kept obsessively checking my account so I knew exactly when it hit. Then I immediately rushed to take the kids out before I had to use it all on bills 😅

My wife and I always put half of our refund into savings and use the other half for something fun with the kids. This year we finally got ours after a 5-month delay and took the kids to a water park for the weekend. Those memories are worth more than the money sitting in our account!

For those still waiting on refunds, I HIGHLY recommend checking your transcripts over just using the Where's My Refund tool. WMR only updates once a week typically, while transcripts update more frequently and show actual codes that can help identify why your refund might be delayed. The codes look confusing at first, but there are resources online to understand them.

0 coins

-

Serene Snow

Any good resources for understanding those codes? Mine has a 570 and 971 but I have no idea what they mean.

0 coins

-

Asher Levin

570 is a hold on your account and 971 means they sent you a notice explaining why. You should receive something in the mail, but it could take a couple weeks. If you want to understand it faster, taxr.ai can translate all those codes and tell you exactly what's happening and what to do next.

i'm still waiting on my refund from FEBRUARY. i've called 20+ times and get disconnected every time. my transcript shows code 570 and 971 but I havent received any notices. at this point i'm assuming i'll never see that money 😭

-

Don't give up! Those codes mean there's a hold on your account and they supposedly sent you a notice. Try using Claimyr.com to get through to an agent - that's how I finally resolved my hold after months of waiting.

I had the same codes. Never got a notice either! When I finally reached someone, turns out they needed verification of some income that didn't match their records. Fixed it in 10 minutes on the phone and got my refund 3 weeks later.

The IRS is so understaffed and underfunded. I used to work there and left because it was impossible to keep up with the workload. The technology is from the stone age and there's just not enough people to process everything. Not making excuses - the delays are terrible - but that's why this keeps happening year after year.

0 coins

I actually feel bad for the workers there. Understaffed, using ancient computers, and dealing with angry people all day (understandably angry, but still).
