When will IRS release my refund? Been waiting 4 months and desperately need the money

Been waiting since April 2025 for my tax refund and still nothing. I check my transcripts daily and nothing has changed in 2 months. I need this money badly to pay for moving expenses and bills piling up. Called the IRS three times and each agent gave me different info - first one said wait 8 weeks, second one said there was no issue they could see but to wait 10 weeks, third one said my return is in errors department but wouldnt explain why. WHY are they holding my money hostage??? My refund is supposed to be $3,820 and its MY money they owe me. Anyone else dealing with this BS? How long did u have to wait?

Louisa Ramirez

Based on what you're describing, your return is likely under manual review in the Error Resolution Department. This happens for various reasons - it could be a simple discrepancy between reported income and what the IRS has on file, or potential identity verification issues. Here's what you need to know: • When a return enters the Error department, the standard processing time is extended by 8-10 weeks from the date it was flagged • The cycle dates on your transcript will remain unchanged until the review is complete • The fact that you're getting different answers from IRS reps is unfortunately common because they often only see partial notes on your account I recommend requesting a Tax Advocate by calling 1-877-777-4778 if you're experiencing financial hardship due to this delay. You'll need to explain your situation and how the delay is causing significant financial difficulties. Also, check your transcript for specific codes that might give more insight - particularly look for 570/971 combinations which often indicate the type of review happening.

Thank u so much for the detailed info! I do see code 570 and 971 on my transcript from June 22. The 971 says 'notice issued' but I never got any notice in the mail??

Louisa Ramirez

That's common - sometimes the notices get lost in the mail or delayed. The 570/971 combo typically means they're making adjustments to your return or need additional information. Call the IRS again and specifically ask about the notice dated June 22 - they should be able to tell you what it was about and possibly resend it.

you can also request a copy of any notices through your online account at irs.gov if you have one set up. Sometimes faster than waiting for them to resend by mail

I'll try both of those options thank you! Getting desperate at this point honestly

I was in the exact same situation a couple months ago and i was going crazy trying to understand what was happening with my refund. Sick of all the IRS non-answers and the waiting game. I tried using taxr.ai to actually read my transcript and understand what was going on instead of just guessing. It explained all the codes and told me exactly why my refund was delayed, even gave me a timeline of what happened and what to expect next. Turned out it was a simple verification issue that I was able to resolve once I understood what was happening. The tool literally saved me weeks of stress and confusion. I recommend checking it out (https://taxr.ai) if you're trying to make sense of your transcript.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

Angel Campbell

It does way more than just read the transcript. It actually analyzes all the codes and dates, explains what each one means specifically for YOUR situation, not just generic definitions. It maps out a timeline of what's happened with your return and can predict what's likely to happen next based on the pattern it sees. I was shocked by how accurate it was - it even identified issues that the IRS agents never mentioned when I called them directly.

OMG I JUST TRIED THIS AND IT ACTUALLY WORKS!!! I've been trying to figure out my transcript for WEEKS and taxr.ai explained everything in like 2 minutes. It showed me exactly why my refund was delayed and what I need to do. This is literally a game changer for anyone dealing with IRS issues. Thank you thank you thank you for sharing this!!

does it cost anything? seems sus that something like this would be free

There is a cost but honestly it's worth every penny when you're sitting around for months wondering what's happening with thousands of dollars. I'd rather pay a small fee to actually understand my situation than wait forever and stress myself out 🤷‍♂️

After waiting 3 months and hitting dead ends on the IRS phone maze, I finally got through to a real person using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They basically hold your place in the phone queue and call you when they have an agent on the line. I had been trying for weeks to get through on my own with no luck. The agent I spoke to was able to identify the issue with my return (missing document) and I got my refund released within two weeks after providing it. Talking to a real person made all the difference - sometimes you just need someone to look at your specific case.

Is this for real? I've literally spent HOURS on hold and never got through.

100% real. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after wasting entire afternoons on hold only to get disconnected. The calling app worked exactly as advertised - I got a call back in about 2 hours when they had an agent on the line. Definitely the best money I've spent this year considering I was waiting on a $4k+ refund.

sounds shady af... how do they get you through when nobody else can?

0 coins

-

They use some kind of system that navigates the IRS phone tree and stays on hold so you don't have to. Not shady at all - they're just solving a real problem. The IRS agent I spoke to was super helpful once I actually got through to them. When you're waiting on thousands of dollars, spending a little to get answers is totally worth it.

Just tried this and can confirm it works!! Got through to an agent who actually explained the hold on my refund was due to income verification. Would never have known this otherwise 🙌

welcome to the club my friend. been waiting 6 months for my $2700 refund. Called them like 50 times. Absolute joke of a system. I finally got thru last week after 2.5 hours on hold and they told me "its being processed, just keep waiting" LIKE WTF??? It's OUR MONEY they sitting on collecting interest while we struggle. Hang in there bro 😤

Ugh that sucks man. How are you staying sane during the wait? I check WMR and transcript like 3 times a day which I know is making me even more crazy

Have you checked your account transcript for specific codes? If you have a 570 code that means they froze your refund for review. Usually followed by a 971 which means they sent you a notice. If you see both of those codes, check the dates associated with them. The resolution usually comes about 4-8 weeks after those codes appear. After that you might see a 571 code (unfreezing your refund) and 846 (refund issued).

I filed in March and just got my refund last week. 5 MONTHS of waiting with no explanation. The IRS is a joke and they don't care about the financial hardship they cause. The system is designed to be confusing and frustrating. What helped me was calling my congressional representative's office - they have caseworkers who can contact the IRS on your behalf. Worth a try since nothing else seems to work.

I didn't even think about calling my rep. Thanks for the tip, I'll try anything at this point

no problem! ask for their taxpayer advocate or caseworker when you call. they've seen it all before and it's literally their job to help with gov agency issues. good luck!

Do you have access to your transcript? Look for specific codes that might explain the holdup. Most common for delays are: 570 - refund hold 971 - notice issued to you 420 - audit examination 424 - examination closed 846 - refund issued (this is what you want to see!) Also check if you claimed EITC or ACTC as those credits trigger automatic additional review.

0 coins

-

Marilyn Dixon

Yes I do have access but the codes are confusing. I see 570 and 971 both dated 6/22/25. No other codes after that. And yes I did claim EITC

0 coins

-

21d

Liam Duke

That explains it - EITC claims are frequently delayed and scrutinized more closely. The 570/971 combo means they're reviewing your return and sent you a notice. Strange you didn't receive it though. If it's been more than 2 weeks since that 6/22 date, I'd call and ask specifically about that notice - they can tell you what it said.

same boat, filed in febuary... still waiting. had to take out a loan to cover what i was counting on from the refund. Called 8 times and got 8 different answers. IRS is literally the worst agency in the governmet 🤮

4 months is actually normal these days, especially if you claimed certain credits. My sister-in-law just got hers after 7 MONTHS. The IRS is severely understaffed and working through a backlog from the pandemic still. Not saying it's right but that's the reality. Hang in there.

If you're at risk of eviction or other serious financial hardship, you qualify for help from the Taxpayer Advocate Service. Call 1-877-777-4778 and explain your situation. They can sometimes expedite refunds in hardship cases.

protip: ALWAYS file paper returns. been doing this for years with zero issues, refund always comes in 3-4 weeks. everyone I know who e-files has problems with delays

0 coins

-

Ben Cooper

This is literally the opposite of what every tax professional recommends lol. Paper returns take WAY longer to process on average. You're just lucky

call it luck but me and my whole family file paper and never wait more than a month. meanwhile everyone on this sub e-filing and waiting 6+ months... just saying 🤷‍♂️

I work at a tax firm and this is TERRIBLE advice. Paper returns are taking 6+ months to process right now. E-file is faster 99% of the time.

The IRS is holding MILLIONS of refunds hostage right now. They're purposely delaying to collect interest on OUR money. It's theft plain and simple. I waited 11 months for my 2024 refund. The system is broken beyond repair.

0 coins

-

Darren Brooks

This isn't actually true. The IRS has to pay YOU interest if they delay your refund more than 45 days after the filing deadline. Check your transcript - bet you got interest added to your refund amount.

0 coins

-

Cynthia Love

yeah they paid me like $50 interest on a $4000 refund they held for almost a year. Meanwhile if I had owed THEM they would charge penalties, fees, and way higher interest. Make it make sense

Have you tried calling the IRS first thing in the morning? I had success getting through at exactly 7:00am when they open. Wait times are much shorter and you might get someone more helpful.

Check if you have an ID.me account set up and can access your transcripts online. Theres specific codes that tell you exactly whats happening with your return. If you see code 570 thats a refund hold. 971 means they sent a notice. If you have those you need to wait for further action or call to find out why.

i felt this in my SOUL. the IRS is running the biggest scam in America and nobody talks about it. they take our money instantly but when its time to give refunds suddenly everything moves at turtle speed 🤬

Facts! If we filed late we'd be paying penalties but they can sit on our money for months with zero consequences 💯

they actually do pay interest on delayed refunds after 45 days from the filing deadline (or from when you filed if you filed after the deadline). small consolation but at least something

Did you file with a tax preparer or DIY software? Some of those free tax prep services are flagging returns more often resulting in delays. I've heard H&R Block and TurboTax customers seeing fewer delays than the free options.

-

Marilyn Dixon

I used FreeTaxUSA... maybe that was my mistake

0 coins

-

21d

Philip Cowan

I don't think that's the issue - FreeTaxUSA is actually pretty reliable. More likely something specific on your return triggered a review. Did you have unemployment? Multiple W-2s? Income that changed significantly from 2023?

I did have 2 W-2s and some unemployment income. Also claimed EITC. So I guess that could be it

Look for tax advocate service in your area. They can help push your refund through if you're experiencing financial hardship because of the delay. Call 1-877-777-4778 and explain your situation. They've helped a lot of people on this sub.

The IRS is complete trash. Im convinced they have monkeys throwing darts to decide which returns to process. Total joke of an agency.

0 coins

-

Gemma Andrews

Hey at least that would be a system. I'm pretty sure they just put all the returns in a giant pile and pick randomly 🤣

0 coins

If you filed with earned income tax credit or child tax credit, those returns automatically get extra scrutiny and take longer to process. The IRS is trying to cut down on fraudulent claims of these credits, but in the process, they're making honest taxpayers wait forever.
