Where's my tax refund? Been waiting 4 months with no updates

I filed my taxes in April 2025 and got accepted right away. Its now been 4 months and when I check the wheres my refund tool it still says processing. I was expecting about $4,750 back. I really need this money for some medical bills that have been piling up. I tried calling the IRS but cant get through to anyone. The automated system just says its still being processed. I checked my transcript online but dont understand all those codes. Anyone else dealing with this? How long should I expect to wait? This is getting ridiculous.

Check your transcript for specific codes. You're probably stuck in the verification or review process. Code 570 means there's a hold on your account. Look for codes 971 (notice issued) or 420 (examination/audit). If you see code 846, that's your refund date. Most common delays right now are due to credits being claimed incorrectly or income verification issues. You should've received a letter if there's a specific issue. If it's been over 120 days, I'd suggest calling the Taxpayer Advocate Service at 877-777-4778. They can help when normal channels fail. Also, make sure your address is current with the IRS so you don't miss any notices they send.

Thanks for the info! I just checked my transcript again and see code 570 and 971 both dated 07/12/2025. Does that mean they sent me a letter? I haven't received anything in the mail.

0 coins

Yes, the 971 means they sent a notice. It could be taking a while to arrive or maybe got lost. You might want to call and request a copy of the notice. The 570/971 combo usually means they found a discrepancy they're reviewing.

this happened to me last year. the letter took almost 3 weeks to arrive after the 971 code showed up on my transcript. IRS mail is SLOW 🐌

I had the exact same issue last month. Tried calling IRS for weeks with no luck. I finally used taxr.ai to analyze my transcript and it showed exactly what was happening and what steps I needed to take. It explained all the codes and told me why my refund was delayed. Super helpful instead of trying to piece everything together yourself. Saved me hours of frustration trying to interpret those confusing transcripts myself. Check it out at https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It scans your entire transcript and explains every code and date in plain english. It also tells you if there are any issues, what they mean, and what steps you need to take. Mine showed I had a verification hold that needed documentation. The tool even gave me the exact form I needed to submit and where to send it. Finally got my refund two weeks after following their instructions!

OMG I JUST TRIED THIS AND WOW!!! It showed me exactly why my refund was delayed - something about a math error adjustment I never would have figured out on my own. Anyone dealing with IRS issues needs to try this immediately! Best tool ever for dealing with tax nightmares 💯

After 3 months of getting nowhere with the IRS website and automated system, I found this app called Claimyr that got me through to an actual human at the IRS in about 30 minutes. claimyr.com helped me skip that ridiculous phone queue. The agent was able to tell me exactly what was wrong with my return and how to fix it. My refund was released a week later. Talking to a live person was the only way I got this resolved - totally worth it to finally get answers instead of that useless automated message.

another scam app promising miracles? how does it even work? the IRS phone system is literally designed to be impenetrable

0 coins

Not a scam at all. It basically navigates the IRS phone system for you and reserves a spot in line. When an agent is available, they call you back. I was skeptical too but after months of getting nowhere myself, it was the best decision I made. Got my $5300 refund after one 15-minute call with an agent who explained everything.

0 coins

I used this too! Took like 45 mins for me but I FINALLY got through. Agent told me my return was flagged for review but they cleared it right on the phone. refund hit my account 8 days later!

0 coins

wait fr? might have to try this... I've been calling literally every day for weeks and always get the 'call back later' message 🤦‍♀️

0 coins

Same boat! Filed in March, still processing. The whole system is a joke. I heard they're prioritizing returns claiming certain credits like EITC and CTC. Did you claim any of those?

0 coins

Are you checking your transcript online or just using the wheres my refund tool? The tool is useless but transcripts show what's actually happening. You need to create an account on irs.gov to access your transcript if you haven't already.

0 coins

I created an account and checked my transcript but all those codes are confusing. I see dates and numbers but don't know what they mean.

0 coins

There's a guide to transcript codes on the IRS website but it's super confusing. Honestly sites like taxr.ai explain it wayyyy better. They break down each code in normal human language lol

0 coins

When I was trying to figure out my transcript last month it was like reading hieroglyphics 🤣 why can't they just use plain english ffs

The IRS is still dealing with a massive backlog from covid. My 2024 return took 8 months to process! Its rediculous. If you need the $ urgently, contact your local congressperson's office. They have liaisons who can help speed things up.

0 coins

THIS. My congressman's office helped me get my refund after 6 months of nothing. Had my money 3 weeks after they got involved.

0 coins

Do you just call their office? What info do you need to provide them?

0 coins

Yep, just call your rep's local office (not DC office) and say you need help with an IRS issue. They'll have you fill out a privacy release form and explain your situation. They usually have dedicated staff who deal with federal agencies.

0 coins

Clown world 🤡 The IRS takes our money instantly but when they owe us we wait months. And try calling them... impossible! They need to be completely overhauled.

0 coins

Facts! They can garnish wages and levy accounts when we owe them but make us jump through hoops to get our own money back.

0 coins

fr they can find you if you owe them 5 cents but when they owe YOU suddenly they move slower than a turtle in molasses 🐢

0 coins

I once got a letter saying I owed $27 from 3 years ago with penalties already added. But when they owe me thousands I gotta wait half a year. Make it make sense.

0 coins

Pro tip: file EARLY next year. Like first week of the season. I filed Jan 29 this year and had my refund by Feb 12. Later you file, longer the wait.

0 coins

Did you claim the earned income credit or child tax credit? Those always get extra scrutiny and take wayyy longer.

0 coins

Yes I claimed EIC. I didn't know that would cause delays.

0 coins

Yeah the IRS is required by law to hold refunds with EITC until mid-February at minimum, but with all the backlog issues they're taking much longer. They manually review a lot of those returns.

0 coins

you probably got identity verification letter that u never received or missed. check transcript for TC 420 or 424. if u see those its verification or audit. you can try to verify online at id.me if that's the issue.

I was in the same situation last month. Absolutely frustrated trying to figure out what was happening with my return. I tried taxr.ai and it explained all the codes on my transcript and showed exactly why my refund was delayed (turned out I had a math error that triggered a manual review). The tool was super helpful - showed me exactly what to expect next and when I'd likely get my refund. Way better than trying to be a detective piecing everything together yourself. https://taxr.ai

Another plug for this service? 🤔

0 coins

I get the skepticism but it genuinely helped me understand wtf was happening with my return after months of confusion. The IRS makes everything so unnecessarily complicated.

0 coins

I just tried it and wow - it showed that my return was flagged for income verification because my W2 from one employer didn't match what they reported. Would've never figured that out on my own!

0 coins

Yall convinced me to try it. Pretty cool actually - explained that i had an offset for an old student loan I forgot about. Cleared up why my refund amount changed.

0 coins

the irs is USELESS. spent 6 hours on hold last month tryin to figure out wtf was goin on with my return. kept gettin disconnected. claimyr.com got me thru in 27 minutes and agent told me my return was flagged cause my employer reported diff income than what i filed. got it fixed right away. best money i ever spent after losin my mind tryna get answers.

0 coins

what even is claimyr? never heard of it

0 coins

its this app that basically waits on hold with the IRS for you. when they get someone on the line, they call you and connect you. saved me literal hours of hold music. after 3 months of no updates I finally got answers and fixed the issue!

0 coins

hmm might check it out. been trying to call the IRS for weeks 😩

0 coins

this happens every year and will continue to happen until congress properly funds the IRS. they're using computers from the 1980s and are understaffed by thousands of people.

0 coins

I read that some of their systems still run on COBOL. Like literally programming from the 60s/70s. Insane.

0 coins

they just got funding and blew it all on hiring more auditors to go after regular people instead of fixing their broken systems 🙄

0 coins

check your mail carefully! sometimes they send letters requesting more info and if you dont respond in 30 days it causes huge delays. check for any letters from kansas city or austin tx especially.

0 coins

Did you file yourself or use a tax preparer? I've noticed DIY returns with credits tend to get flagged more often.

0 coins

I used one of those online tax software programs. Do you think that's part of the problem?

0 coins

Possibly. The cheap tax software doesn't always catch everything that might trigger a review. Not saying you did anything wrong, but sometimes the way info is entered matters.

0 coins

took me 7 MONTHS to get my refund last year. and it was only because i used claimyr.com to finally talk to someone. the agent released the hold on my account right then. worth every penny to finally get my money after trying for months on my own. the regular IRS phone line is literally designed to get you to give up.

0 coins

how does claimyr actually work? seems sketchy

0 coins

nothing sketchy about it - they basically call the IRS over and over using their system until they get through. when they get an agent on the line, they call you and connect you. saved me hours of frustration and got my $3900 refund released.

0 coins

literally just used this last week after seeing a similar post. got through to IRS in 35 minutes after trying for WEEKS on my own. issue resolved in one call.

0 coins

I filed in February, still nothing. It's outrageous. I'm thinking of contacting a tax advocate but heard they're backed up too.

0 coins

When I was dealing with a similar issue, I discovered taxr.ai and it was a game-changer. Instead of staring at those cryptic transcript codes trying to make sense of them, the tool analyzed everything and gave me a clear explanation. Showed me I had a verification issue and gave step-by-step instructions on how to resolve it. Saved me hours of research and confusion. Highly recommend if you're stuck trying to decipher IRS language! https://taxr.ai

0 coins

Just used taxr.ai after seeing your comment. Explained EVERYTHING about my situation. Turns out I'm getting a math adjustment that will actually increase my refund! Would have never figured that out on my own.

0 coins

another ad? 🙄

0 coins

Not an ad - just sharing what worked for me after 3 months of getting nowhere. The IRS isn't exactly helpful with explaining things in plain english.

0 coins

dont knock it till you try it. i wasted weeks trying to understand my transcript before finding this. showed me exactly why my refund was delayed and what to expect next.

0 coins

I feel your pain! Been in a similar situation before. Four months is definitely excessive, especially when you need the money for medical bills. A few things to check: 1. Look for any mail from the IRS - sometimes letters get delayed or lost 2. If you claimed EITC or other credits, they do extra review which adds months 3. Your transcript codes 570/971 that others mentioned usually mean they need to verify something The Taxpayer Advocate Service really can help when you've been waiting this long - they're separate from regular IRS customer service and actually have power to move things along. You can also try contacting your congressman's office like others suggested. Don't give up! Your refund is coming, the system is just painfully slow right now. Keep checking that transcript for any new codes or dates.

0 coins

This is really helpful advice! I'm in a similar situation - filed in March and still waiting. The medical bills part really hits home because that's exactly why I need my refund too. Going to try the Taxpayer Advocate Service route since I've been waiting over 4 months now. Thanks for breaking down the options so clearly!
