Tax Refund Delayed But Child Tax Credit Just Hit My New Bank Account!

Oh my goodness!!! I just checked and my Child Tax Credit payment arrived in my new bank account - the one I updated on my 2023 tax return! 馃槉馃槉馃槉 I'm so relieved! Still waiting on my actual refund though...my return status still shows as processing. But this gives me hope! I've been checking WMR every single day (sometimes 3-4 times if I'm being honest). I triple-checked all my documents before filing, and was so worried something went wrong when the refund didn't come. This is proof the IRS is actually looking at our returns! There is hope for everyone waiting!!!

This is a positive development, but I'd recommend monitoring both accounts carefully. The IRS processing system sometimes bifurcates payments when account information has been updated mid-cycle. Per Internal Revenue Manual 21.4.1, refund disbursements and credit payments utilize separate processing pipelines despite appearing integrated in your online account. The Child Tax Credit advance utilizes the most recently verified banking information, while your refund processing follows standard verification protocols including potential identity verification and income documentation review.

This is super helpful! I've been waiting since February 15th for my refund and was wondering why my CTC came through but not the refund. Makes so much more sense now.

I had something similar happen last year. My advance payments went to my new account but my refund initially tried to go to my closed account. Did you receive any notification about the refund being rejected from an old account?

I'm in the same situation! My CTC just hit yesterday but refund still says processing. I've been calling the IRS for weeks trying to figure out what's going on - did you have to contact them at all to get this resolved?

Thanks for explaining this! The IRS.gov FAQ section mentions this but it's buried in technical language. Bookmarking this explanation for future reference.

According to Treasury Regulation 搂301.6402-2, the IRS must process refund claims within a reasonable timeframe, though no specific deadline is mandated by statute. When processing delays exceed 45 days, I've found that establishing direct contact with an IRS representative can expedite resolution. Have you attempted to reach the IRS directly? Many taxpayers report success using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to bypass the hold times. Their service connects you directly to an IRS agent who can verify if there are specific holds on your refund that aren't visible on the WMR tool.

Hmm, not sure about paying a third party just to talk to the IRS... couldn't you just call early in the morning? I've heard if you call right when they open you can sometimes get through without the crazy wait times. 馃

It's like paying for a fast pass at an amusement park - is it really worth it? How much does this service cost compared to just spending the time on hold yourself?

This exact scenario happened to me! My CTC deposit went through to my new account on April 2nd, but my refund status was stuck on "still processing" until April 18th. The refund finally showed up in my new account as well. According to the IRS representative I spoke with, the system validates different payment types through separate verification queues. CTC payments are processed through the Advance Payment Management System while refunds go through the Refund Processing Pipeline.

I've seen this pattern with several clients this tax season. The Child Tax Credit payments are processed through a different system than regular refunds. When reviewing your transcript, you might see codes 766/768 for the credit and 846 for the refund release. If you're confused about what all those codes mean on your account transcript, I recommend using taxr.ai - it's been incredibly helpful for my clients who want to understand their transcript without deciphering IRS jargon. It can tell you exactly what each code means for your specific situation and give you a better estimate of when to expect your refund.

Not sure if another website is the answer. IRS already provides transcript code explanations. Why pay for something that's available free? Just seems unnecessary.

I tried the IRS explanations first. Tbh they're super confusing. The codes have different meanings depending on context. What worked for me was getting a clear timeline. Not everyone needs extra help but some of us do!

This might not be good news. Split payments sometimes indicate review flags. Different systems. Different timelines. Could mean manual review of return. Might be months more waiting. One payment doesn't guarantee the other.

Nah, don't stress too much! This is actually pretty normal this yr. Had same thing happen w/ my return. CTC came thru 3 wks b4 refund. IRS is just super backed up rn. As long as WMR doesn't show any errors or say you need to contact them, ur prob fine! The fact that they sent something to ur new acct is def a good sign they've processed at least part of ur return. Hang in there!
