Claim suspended for 'double dipping' after filing new application - need to switch back to regular benefits
I'm at my wit's end with DEO! I was on regular unemployment from February 2024 until my benefit year ended in February 2025. When my benefits ran out, a DEO rep told me I needed to file a completely new application (instead of just requesting an extension). BIG MISTAKE. Now my claim is completely suspended because the system flagged me for 'double dipping' and I'm stuck in adjudication limbo waiting for them to review my case. According to what I'm reading, I should have just been continued on my regular benefits instead of filing a whole new claim. Has anyone dealt with this 'double dipping' suspension issue? It's been 3 weeks with no income and I'm panicking about bills. Any advice on how to get this resolved faster?

This happened to me in January. The system is designed to prevent people from collecting on two claims at once, which they call 'double dipping.' When you file a new application while your benefit year is still active (even if your benefits are exhausted), it triggers an automatic adjudication hold. You need to call and speak with a claims adjudicator specifically - not just a regular rep - who can remove the hold and properly extend your benefits. It took me about 4 weeks to get it resolved.

•Thanks for explaining! Did you just keep calling the regular DEO number until you reached an adjudicator? I've been trying for days and can't ever get through - just endless busy signals or the automated system hangs up on me.

ya this is super common, the DEO reps give bad advice ALL THE TIME. they told me to do the same thing last yr & i got stuck for 8 wks!!! u should NEVER file a new claim when ur benefit yr isn't over, just need extension. sorry ur dealing w/ this mess!

•Ugh, 8 weeks??? I can't wait that long! Did you do anything special to finally get it fixed or just wait it out?

Sorry you're going through this! 💔 The same thing happened to my brother last month. The waiting is the worst part.

I successfully resolved this exact issue last month. Here's what you need to do: 1. You need to speak with a claims adjudicator, not a regular customer service rep. Regular reps can't remove the double dipping flag. 2. When you speak with the adjudicator, explain that you were instructed to file a new claim but should have been placed on an extension of your existing claim. Request that they remove the new claim and properly extend the original claim. 3. Be prepared to provide your work search records for all weeks you're claiming, as they'll likely review these during the call. 4. Reference Florida Administrative Code 73B-11.013 which covers benefit year extensions - having this specific rule number ready shows you've done your research. The challenging part is actually reaching someone. I tried for over a week with no success using the regular number. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to a DEO agent within 45 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/UzW_hbUy-ss?si=zORd51jeq1GX5Ldj. It was worth it to get this resolved instead of waiting potentially months.

•Thank you SO MUCH for this detailed info! I've never heard of Claimyr before but I'm desperate at this point. I'll check out that video. Just to clarify - once you got through to an adjudicator, how long did it take for them to actually fix your claim and release payments?

NOBODY at DEO knows what they're doing!!! The left hand doesn't know what the right is doing and WE suffer! I've been fighting with them for 3 months about a similar issue. They told me to file a new claim then accused me of fraud!!! Now I'm appealing and the hearing isn't for another 6 weeks. The whole system is designed to make us give up.

•omg they accused u of fraud?? thats terrifying. did they say u have to pay back money too?

To answer your question - once I reached an adjudicator who understood the issue, it took about 3 business days for them to remove the double dipping flag and process my back payments. They did need to verify my work searches for the weeks I was claiming, so having those records organized and ready was helpful. Also, make sure you're still claiming weeks while waiting for adjudication, even though they won't pay until the issue is resolved.

•3 days isn't too bad once you actually get through to someone! And yes, I've been religiously claiming my weeks and documenting all 5 work searches per week. I'm going to try reaching out tomorrow using your suggestion.

I had something kinda similar but not exactly the same. My adjudication was for something else but I used the Contact Us form on CONNECT and selected "Claims" and then "Adjudication" from the dropdown menus and explained my situation. Got a call back 5 days later and they fixed it! Maybe worth trying while you're also attempting to call in.

•That's a great idea, thank you! I'll definitely try the Contact Us form today. At this point I'm throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks.

•PUA (Pandemic Unemployment Assistance) ended in 2021. The OP is just trying to get back on regular unemployment benefits (now called Reemployment Assistance in Florida).

UPDATE: I finally got this resolved! Used Claimyr to get through to DEO this morning and was connected to an agent in about 30 minutes. They transferred me to an adjudicator who confirmed I should have never been told to file a new claim. They're removing the new application, putting me back on my original claim with an extension, and said I should see payments within 48 hours for all my back weeks! Thank you everyone for your help - especially the suggestion to use Claimyr and to specifically ask for an adjudicator.

This is such great news and gives me hope! I'm dealing with a similar situation right now where I was also told to file a new claim instead of getting an extension. Been waiting 2 weeks so far with no resolution. Definitely going to try the Claimyr service you mentioned - seems like getting to the right person (an adjudicator) is the key. Thanks for sharing your success story and coming back to update us!

This is exactly why I always recommend people document everything when dealing with DEO! Take screenshots of any advice given through the system and get rep names/ID numbers when you call. The inconsistent information from different reps is a huge problem. So glad you got this sorted out - your success story will definitely help others in the same boat. For anyone else reading this, the key takeaways seem to be: 1) Ask specifically for an adjudicator, not just any rep, 2) Have your work search records ready, and 3) Don't be afraid to use services like Claimyr if you can't get through the regular way. The system is broken but there are ways to work around it!

•This is such solid advice! I'm new to this community but dealing with DEO issues myself. The documentation tip is gold - I wish I had known to get rep names and ID numbers from the start. It's frustrating that we have to become experts in navigating a broken system just to get the benefits we're entitled to. Thank you for laying out those key takeaways so clearly. It's really helpful to see what actually works versus just hoping and waiting.

Welcome to the community! This post really highlights how confusing and inconsistent DEO can be with their guidance. I went through something similar last year where different reps gave me completely contradictory advice about my claim. What really helped me was keeping detailed notes of every conversation - date, time, rep name if they gave it, and exactly what they told me. When I finally got to someone who could actually help, having that documentation made it much easier to explain the conflicting information I'd received. It's ridiculous that we have to become amateur lawyers just to get our unemployment benefits, but unfortunately that seems to be the reality with Florida's system. Really glad to see you got this resolved and came back to share the solution - that kind of follow-up is so valuable for others dealing with the same mess!

•Thanks for the welcome! You're absolutely right about needing to document everything - I'm learning that the hard way. I just started dealing with DEO last month and it's been eye-opening how inconsistent the information is. Your tip about keeping detailed notes with dates and rep names is something I'm definitely going to start doing. It's crazy that we need to build our own paper trail just to protect ourselves from their own system's confusion. Really appreciate communities like this where people share what actually works instead of just venting (though the venting is therapeutic too!). The success stories give me hope that there's light at the end of the tunnel.

I'm so glad you were able to get this resolved and came back to update everyone! Your experience is unfortunately way too common - DEO reps giving contradictory advice that creates more problems than it solves. I'm dealing with my own DEO nightmare right now (different issue but same runaround) and seeing your success story gives me hope. The fact that it only took 30 minutes with Claimyr versus weeks of trying the regular phone system really says everything about how broken the current system is. Thank you for sharing the specific steps and mentioning the Florida Administrative Code reference - those details are incredibly helpful for others facing the same situation. It's amazing how one knowledgeable adjudicator was able to fix in minutes what should have never been a problem in the first place!

•Absolutely agree! The contrast between 30 minutes with Claimyr versus weeks of busy signals and runarounds really exposes how dysfunctional the regular system has become. I'm new here but already seeing a pattern where people who get results are the ones who find creative workarounds rather than following the "official" process. It's honestly depressing that we've all become experts at navigating bureaucratic failures just to access basic unemployment benefits. But posts like this are so valuable - having real solutions with specific steps makes all the difference when you're drowning in the system. Hope your DEO nightmare gets resolved soon too! This community seems to be one of the few places where people actually help each other instead of just giving form letter responses.

This thread is exactly what I needed to see! I'm currently dealing with a very similar situation - was on regular unemployment benefits that ended in January, called DEO for guidance, and was told by a rep to file a completely new application. Now I'm stuck with the same "double dipping" flag and have been waiting 5 weeks with no payments. Reading through everyone's experiences here, it's clear that getting to an adjudicator (not just any rep) is crucial. I'm definitely going to try the Claimyr service that several people mentioned, and I'll make sure to reference Florida Administrative Code 73B-11.013 when I finally get through. It's incredibly frustrating that DEO reps are giving advice that creates these problems, but I'm grateful for communities like this where people share real solutions that actually work. Thanks everyone for the detailed advice and for Aisha coming back with the successful resolution - gives me hope I can get this mess sorted out soon!
