Phone interview completed but weeks now show 'disqualification' status - am I losing my EDD benefits?

Really stressed out right now. I had my eligibility phone interview with EDD last Thursday, and at the same time I had pending weeks to certify. After the interview finished, that eligibility interview notification disappeared from my UI Online homepage (which I thought was a good sign!). The site still showed I had weeks available to certify, so I went ahead and certified for those weeks today. But now when I check, the status for those weeks says "disqualification" instead of "pending" or "paid"! Does this mean I failed my interview and won't be getting any unemployment benefits? Has anyone gone through this before? The interviewer didn't tell me anything about being disqualified during our call - I thought everything went fine! What should I do now? Call them back? File an appeal? I'm really counting on these payments for my rent next month.

This doesn't necessarily mean you're permanently disqualified. Sometimes the system updates with a temporary disqualification status while they process your interview results. When exactly did you have your interview and when did you certify? If it's been less than 48 hours, I'd wait a bit before panicking. However, if it's been more than that, you should definitely contact EDD to find out the specific reason for the disqualification so you can address it properly. Did you receive any notices in your UI Online inbox explaining the disqualification?

The interview was Thursday afternoon and I certified Sunday morning (today). No notices in my inbox yet explaining anything! That's what's making me so anxious. Should I just keep checking my inbox for the next few days?

Thanks for sharing that! Did your cousin have to call them or did it just automatically change to paid without him doing anything?

This happened to me but mine never changed from disqualification. Turns out they didn't think I was looking for work enough even though I applied to 3 jobs every week. EDD is so frustrating!!! They make everything complicated on purpose I swear.

Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of. Did you end up appealing? I did mention all my job searches during the interview.

Based on your timeline (Thursday interview, Sunday certification, disqualification status today), this is likely still processing. Here's what you need to understand: 1. The eligibility interview results aren't instantly processed in the system 2. A disqualification status often appears BEFORE the final determination is made 3. You should receive a Notice of Determination in your UI Online inbox within 5-7 days of your interview explaining any decision I'd recommend waiting until Wednesday to see if you get a notice or if the status changes. If by Thursday it's still showing disqualification and you haven't received any notices, then you should contact EDD for clarification. If you do receive a disqualification notice, remember you have the right to appeal within 30 days of the mailing date on the notice. Don't miss that deadline if you believe the decision is incorrect.

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! This helps me understand what might be happening. I'll try to be patient until Wednesday and keep checking my inbox for notices.

I don't want to be discouraging, but "disqualification" usually means exactly what it sounds like - you've been disqualified from receiving benefits for those weeks. The good news is that it might only apply to specific weeks rather than your entire claim. What were you discussing in your eligibility interview? Was it about availability for work, refusing a job offer, or reporting earnings? Those are common reasons for disqualifications that might only affect certain weeks.

The interview was about my availability for work. I had a week where I was out of town for a family emergency, but I told them I was still applying for jobs online during that time. Could that be the issue?

That could definitely be the reason. Being out of town might have triggered a "not available for work" determination, even if you were applying online. EDD requires you to be ready to accept work immediately if offered during all weeks you claim. If the disqualification is limited to just that week you were away, you might still be eligible for other weeks.

This happend to my friend too!! EDD is soooo strict about the "available for work" thing. Its not fair bc who doesnt have emergencies sometimes??

Have you tried calling EDD to ask about the disqualification? That's what I did when I had a similar issue last month. Took me FOREVER to get through to anyone though - like 2 full days of calling over and over again and getting the "we're receiving too many calls" message. So frustrating when you just need a simple answer!

I haven't tried calling yet because I've heard horror stories about the wait times. Did you eventually get through? Was it worth the effort?

Honestly, once I got through it was totally worth it. The rep explained exactly why I was disqualified (in my case it was because I reported some self-employment income but didn't fill out the form correctly). She even helped me fix it right there on the phone. But getting through was such a nightmare that I almost gave up multiple times.

Hey, if you're having trouble getting through to EDD on the phone (which is super common unfortunately), you might want to try Claimyr. It's this service that basically calls EDD for you and connects you when they get through to a rep. I used it after trying for 3 days to get through on my own and it saved me so much time and frustration. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. For me it was totally worth it because I needed to resolve my disqualification before my rent was due.

Thanks for the tip! I might check that out if I can't get through after a couple days of trying. At this point I'm willing to try anything to get this resolved quickly.

DONT WAIT TO APPEAL!! Even if you think it might change or fix itself! I made that mistake and almost missed my appeal deadline because I kept thinking it would resolve on its own. Start gathering documentation NOW - screenshots of your work search activities, any emails confirming job applications, etc. The system is DESIGNED to make people give up!!

This is actually good advice. While waiting a few days to see if the status changes is reasonable, you should definitely prepare for an appeal just in case. The 30-day appeal window starts from when they mail the Notice of Determination, not from when you see the disqualification status online.

Is your boyfriend's brother the ONE competent person at EDD? Can you give us his direct line? 😂

To summarize the advice here based on your situation: 1. Wait 3-4 days to see if the status changes or if you receive a Notice of Determination 2. Start collecting documentation about your work search activities and availability during the questioned period 3. If nothing changes by Thursday, try contacting EDD directly 4. If you receive a formal disqualification notice, file an appeal within 30 days 5. Be prepared to explain how you were available for work despite being out of town Many disqualifications are overturned on appeal if you can demonstrate you were making reasonable efforts to find work and were available to accept suitable employment.

Thank you so much for laying it out step by step. This has been super helpful and makes me feel a bit calmer about the situation. I'm going to follow these steps exactly. I really appreciate everyone's advice!
