Phone interview completed but weeks now show 'disqualification' status - am I losing my EDD benefits?
Really stressed out right now. I had my eligibility phone interview with EDD last Thursday, and at the same time I had pending weeks to certify. After the interview finished, that eligibility interview notification disappeared from my UI Online homepage (which I thought was a good sign!). The site still showed I had weeks available to certify, so I went ahead and certified for those weeks today. But now when I check, the status for those weeks says "disqualification" instead of "pending" or "paid"! Does this mean I failed my interview and won't be getting any unemployment benefits? Has anyone gone through this before? The interviewer didn't tell me anything about being disqualified during our call - I thought everything went fine! What should I do now? Call them back? File an appeal? I'm really counting on these payments for my rent next month.

This doesn't necessarily mean you're permanently disqualified. Sometimes the system updates with a temporary disqualification status while they process your interview results. When exactly did you have your interview and when did you certify? If it's been less than 48 hours, I'd wait a bit before panicking. However, if it's been more than that, you should definitely contact EDD to find out the specific reason for the disqualification so you can address it properly. Did you receive any notices in your UI Online inbox explaining the disqualification?

•The interview was Thursday afternoon and I certified Sunday morning (today). No notices in my inbox yet explaining anything! That's what's making me so anxious. Should I just keep checking my inbox for the next few days?

•Thanks for sharing that! Did your cousin have to call them or did it just automatically change to paid without him doing anything?

This happened to me but mine never changed from disqualification. Turns out they didn't think I was looking for work enough even though I applied to 3 jobs every week. EDD is so frustrating!!! They make everything complicated on purpose I swear.

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of. Did you end up appealing? I did mention all my job searches during the interview.

Based on your timeline (Thursday interview, Sunday certification, disqualification status today), this is likely still processing. Here's what you need to understand: 1. The eligibility interview results aren't instantly processed in the system 2. A disqualification status often appears BEFORE the final determination is made 3. You should receive a Notice of Determination in your UI Online inbox within 5-7 days of your interview explaining any decision I'd recommend waiting until Wednesday to see if you get a notice or if the status changes. If by Thursday it's still showing disqualification and you haven't received any notices, then you should contact EDD for clarification. If you do receive a disqualification notice, remember you have the right to appeal within 30 days of the mailing date on the notice. Don't miss that deadline if you believe the decision is incorrect.

•Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! This helps me understand what might be happening. I'll try to be patient until Wednesday and keep checking my inbox for notices.

I don't want to be discouraging, but "disqualification" usually means exactly what it sounds like - you've been disqualified from receiving benefits for those weeks. The good news is that it might only apply to specific weeks rather than your entire claim. What were you discussing in your eligibility interview? Was it about availability for work, refusing a job offer, or reporting earnings? Those are common reasons for disqualifications that might only affect certain weeks.

Chloe Harris
•The interview was about my availability for work. I had a week where I was out of town for a family emergency, but I told them I was still applying for jobs online during that time. Could that be the issue?
0 coins
Zara Khan
That could definitely be the reason. Being out of town might have triggered a "not available for work" determination, even if you were applying online. EDD requires you to be ready to accept work immediately if offered during all weeks you claim. If the disqualification is limited to just that week you were away, you might still be eligible for other weeks.

•This happend to my friend too!! EDD is soooo strict about the "available for work" thing. Its not fair bc who doesnt have emergencies sometimes??

Have you tried calling EDD to ask about the disqualification? That's what I did when I had a similar issue last month. Took me FOREVER to get through to anyone though - like 2 full days of calling over and over again and getting the "we're receiving too many calls" message. So frustrating when you just need a simple answer!

•I haven't tried calling yet because I've heard horror stories about the wait times. Did you eventually get through? Was it worth the effort?

Honestly, once I got through it was totally worth it. The rep explained exactly why I was disqualified (in my case it was because I reported some self-employment income but didn't fill out the form correctly). She even helped me fix it right there on the phone. But getting through was such a nightmare that I almost gave up multiple times.

Hey, if you're having trouble getting through to EDD on the phone (which is super common unfortunately), you might want to try Claimyr. It's this service that basically calls EDD for you and connects you when they get through to a rep. I used it after trying for 3 days to get through on my own and it saved me so much time and frustration. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. For me it was totally worth it because I needed to resolve my disqualification before my rent was due.

DONT WAIT TO APPEAL!! Even if you think it might change or fix itself! I made that mistake and almost missed my appeal deadline because I kept thinking it would resolve on its own. Start gathering documentation NOW - screenshots of your work search activities, any emails confirming job applications, etc. The system is DESIGNED to make people give up!!

•This is actually good advice. While waiting a few days to see if the status changes is reasonable, you should definitely prepare for an appeal just in case. The 30-day appeal window starts from when they mail the Notice of Determination, not from when you see the disqualification status online.

btw my boyfriends brother works at EDD (not telling which office lol) and he says TONS of people get disqualified by mistake bc the system is super old and glitchy. so dont lose hope!!!

To summarize the advice here based on your situation: 1. Wait 3-4 days to see if the status changes or if you receive a Notice of Determination 2. Start collecting documentation about your work search activities and availability during the questioned period 3. If nothing changes by Thursday, try contacting EDD directly 4. If you receive a formal disqualification notice, file an appeal within 30 days 5. Be prepared to explain how you were available for work despite being out of town Many disqualifications are overturned on appeal if you can demonstrate you were making reasonable efforts to find work and were available to accept suitable employment.

I went through something very similar last year! Had my phone interview on a Tuesday, certified that weekend, and saw "disqualification" status for about 6 days before it switched to "paid." The waiting was absolutely nerve-wracking, but it turned out the system just needed time to process everything. One thing that helped me was logging into UI Online multiple times a day to check for any new messages or notices - sometimes they appear before the status actually changes. Also, if you do end up needing to call EDD, I found that calling right when they open (8 AM) or during lunch hours (12-1 PM) gave me better luck getting through than calling mid-morning when everyone else is trying. Hang in there - the fact that your interview notification disappeared from your homepage is actually a good sign that they processed it successfully. The disqualification status might just be a temporary system glitch while they finalize everything!

•This gives me so much hope! Six days feels like forever when you're waiting for benefits, but knowing it can change to "paid" after that long makes me feel better. I've been checking my UI Online probably way too often already, but I'll keep doing that and look for any new messages. Thanks for the tip about calling times too - I'll definitely try 8 AM or lunch time if I need to call later this week. It's reassuring to hear from someone who went through almost the exact same thing!

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Had my phone interview last Wednesday, certified yesterday, and woke up today to see "disqualification" status. I was literally about to panic and start calling EDD immediately, but after reading all these responses I feel so much better knowing this might just be normal processing time. It's crazy how the system shows such a scary status while they're still reviewing everything - you'd think they could use something less alarming like "under review" or "processing." Going to follow the advice here and wait until the end of the week before freaking out. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences, this thread is exactly what I needed to see today!

•I'm so glad this thread helped you too! It's really frustrating how EDD uses such scary language when they're probably just processing things normally. The "disqualification" status definitely sounds way more final and terrifying than it apparently is in many cases. I think you're making the right call waiting until the end of the week - from what everyone's shared here, it seems like most people see changes within that timeframe. Fingers crossed for both of us that our statuses change to "paid" soon! Keep us updated on how it goes.

I'm actually dealing with this exact situation right now too! Had my eligibility interview on Friday, certified over the weekend, and now I'm seeing that dreaded "disqualification" status. Reading through all these responses has been such a relief - I was convinced I had somehow failed my interview even though it seemed to go well. It's really helpful to see that so many people have experienced the same thing and that it often resolves itself within a week. The EDD system really needs better status descriptions because "disqualification" makes it sound like you're permanently cut off from benefits when it might just mean "we're still processing your interview results." I'm going to follow the advice here and wait until Thursday before calling, but I'm definitely going to start gathering all my job search documentation just in case I need to appeal. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences - this community is so valuable when dealing with EDD's confusing processes!

•It's so reassuring to see I'm not alone in this! I had my interview Thursday and I'm in the exact same boat - that "disqualification" status is absolutely terrifying when you first see it. You're right that EDD really needs better wording for their statuses. Something like "interview results pending" would save so many people from panic attacks! I'm also gathering my job search documentation just to be safe. It sounds like most people here either saw their status change within a week or were able to successfully appeal if needed. Hopefully we'll all have good news by the end of this week. This thread has been a lifesaver for my anxiety levels!

I just wanted to add my experience to help ease everyone's anxiety about this "disqualification" status situation. I went through this exact same thing about 3 months ago - had my eligibility interview, certified for weeks, then saw that terrifying "disqualification" status that made me think I'd lost everything. Here's what I learned: EDD's system seems to default to "disqualification" as a placeholder status while they're still processing interview results. It's like their system assumes you're disqualified until they can confirm you're not, which is backwards and causes so much unnecessary stress. In my case, it took exactly 8 days for the status to change from "disqualification" to "paid." During those 8 days, I got no communication from EDD explaining what was happening - no emails, no notices in my UI Online inbox, nothing. Then suddenly one morning I logged in and all my weeks showed "paid" and the money was deposited the next day. The key thing that helped me stay (somewhat) sane during the wait was keeping a detailed log of all my job search activities and any communication with EDD, just in case I needed to appeal. But thankfully I never had to use any of that documentation. For anyone currently dealing with this - try to hang in there for at least a full week before panicking. The system is just really slow and poorly designed, but it often works out in the end!

•Thank you so much for sharing your detailed experience! Eight days must have felt like an eternity, but it's really reassuring to hear that it eventually worked out and you got paid. The fact that you received absolutely no communication during those 8 days but then everything suddenly switched to "paid" really highlights how broken EDD's communication system is. It's honestly ridiculous that they use "disqualification" as a default placeholder - that would stress anyone out! I'm definitely going to keep logging all my job search activities like you suggested, just to be prepared. Your story gives me hope that this might just be their normal (terrible) process rather than an actual problem with my claim.

I'm going through literally the exact same situation right now! Had my eligibility interview this past Wednesday, certified yesterday, and just checked this morning to find that scary "disqualification" status staring back at me. I was about to have a complete meltdown until I found this thread - you all have no idea how much relief these responses have given me! It's honestly insane that EDD uses such alarming language for what appears to be just normal processing delays. Like seriously, who thought "disqualification" was a good placeholder status? They could easily say "under review" or "processing" instead of making everyone think they've been permanently cut off from benefits. Based on everyone's experiences here, it sounds like I should expect this to potentially take up to a week or even longer to resolve. The waiting is going to be brutal, especially since I have bills due next week, but at least now I know this might just be their broken system rather than an actual rejection. I'm definitely going to start documenting all my job search activities right away, just in case I need to appeal later. And if nothing changes by next Wednesday, I'll try calling during those 8 AM or lunch hour windows that someone mentioned. Thanks everyone for sharing your stories - this community is such a lifeline when dealing with EDD's nightmare processes!

•I'm so glad you found this thread too! It's crazy how many of us are going through the exact same thing right now - it really shows how common this "disqualification" placeholder issue is with EDD's system. You're absolutely right about the terrible wording choice - "under review" would save so many people from panic attacks! The fact that so many people here have had the same experience and most got resolved within a week really gives me confidence that this is just EDD's broken process rather than actual disqualifications. It's still nerve-wracking waiting when you have bills due, but at least we're not alone in this. Keep us posted on how it goes - hopefully by next week we'll all have some good news to share!

I'm experiencing the exact same thing right now too! Had my phone interview on Tuesday, certified yesterday, and woke up this morning to see "disqualification" status on all my weeks. My heart literally dropped when I saw it because I thought I had done something wrong during the interview. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been such a huge relief - it's clear this is just how EDD's ancient system handles things while they process interview results. The fact that so many people have gone through this exact scenario and most got resolved within a week really helps calm my nerves. What's particularly frustrating is how EDD gives zero explanation about what's happening. No notice, no message, just that terrifying "disqualification" word that makes you think your benefits are gone forever. They really need to update their system to use less scary language during processing periods. I'm going to follow the advice here - wait until early next week before calling, start documenting all my job search activities, and keep checking for any notices in my UI Online inbox. Thanks everyone for sharing your stories, this thread is exactly what I needed to see today!

•You're definitely not alone in this - it's actually kind of reassuring to see how many people are experiencing this exact same thing right now! I think that just confirms this is EDD's standard (terrible) process rather than something specific to any of our individual cases. The timing is almost identical for all of us too - interview earlier this week, certified yesterday or today, then boom... that scary "disqualification" status. I'm trying to stay positive based on all the success stories people have shared here. It sounds like most people see their status change within 5-8 days, which would put us right around early next week. I'm also planning to follow the same approach - give it until Tuesday or Wednesday before panicking, and start getting my documentation ready just in case. It's so frustrating that EDD can't just send a simple message saying "your interview results are being processed" instead of using language that makes us think we've been permanently denied. But at least we have this community to help each other through the stress of waiting! Fingers crossed we all have good news by the middle of next week.

I was literally about to have a panic attack until I found this thread - you all are lifesavers! It's really eye-opening to see how many people are experiencing this identical situation. The timing is so similar for everyone - interview one day, certify a few days later, then that terrifying status shows up. It really does seem like this is just EDD's broken system defaulting to "disqualification" while they process everything behind the scenes. The fact that someone's interview notification disappeared (which happened to me too) and that so many people eventually got switched to "paid" after 5-8 days gives me hope. I'm definitely going to start gathering all my job search documentation today and wait until Thursday before calling. The 8 AM calling tip is gold - I'll definitely try that if needed. •I'm so relieved to find others going through this exact same thing! I had my interview last Monday and just certified this weekend - same terrifying "disqualification" status showed up today. The anxiety has been killing me because I have no idea what it means or if I did something wrong during my interview. Reading everyone's experiences here is giving me so much hope though. It really does seem like this is just EDD's awful way of showing "still processing" rather than an actual rejection. The fact that your interview notification disappeared too (mine did as well) seems to be a pattern with people who eventually got paid. I'm going to follow the same plan - wait until Thursday/Friday before calling and start documenting everything now. The 8 AM calling strategy sounds smart if it comes to that.
