EDD portal showing disqualification right after phone interview - is this normal?

I just had my eligibility interview with EDD this morning, and I'm freaking out a bit. I logged into my UI Online account about 2 hours after the call ended, and noticed both weeks I certified for are suddenly marked as "disqualified" - they weren't showing that status before my interview! The interviewer seemed pretty neutral during our call and didn't indicate any problems with my claim. She just asked about my job separation (I was laid off due to department restructuring) and verified some employment dates. No mention of any issues or disqualification. Does the portal update this quickly after interviews? Is this normal or did something go terribly wrong? Has anyone experienced a status change this fast? I'm worried sick since I'm counting on these benefits to cover rent next month ($2,850 due in two weeks).

Yes, the EDD portal can sometimes update within hours after an interview. I had the exact same thing happen after my eligibility interview in January. My weeks went from pending to disqualified almost immediately. BUT here's the good news - it was just a temporary status while they processed the final determination. Three days later everything switched to paid without me doing anything. Sometimes their system shows interim statuses while they complete the review process.

That's a huge relief to hear! Did you have to call them or did it just automatically update to paid? I'm wondering if I should try to contact them tomorrow or just wait the 3 days like in your situation.

Mine did the same thing back in december, went from pending to DQ after my phonecall but then like a week later it went back to normal. The EDD lady told me later it was bc they had to verify my identity or something. Just wait a few days before u panic

Thank you! It's good to know I'm not alone in this. A week feels like forever when you're worried about money, but I'll try to be patient.

This could actually indicate an issue that needs addressing. The "disqualified" status typically doesn't appear as a temporary processing status - it usually means there's a specific eligibility issue. While it sometimes resolves automatically as others mentioned, I'd recommend proactively contacting EDD rather than just waiting, especially since you have rent coming due soon. The specific reasons for disqualification should be mailed to you within 10 days, but calling can get you answers faster. You might want to specifically ask if there was any confusion about your job separation details or if they need additional documentation from your employer.

That's what I'm worried about - that there's some misunderstanding about my layoff. My former employer told me they'd confirm everything if contacted, but maybe something got mixed up in communication. I'll try calling first thing tomorrow.

OMG the EXACT same thing happened to meeeee!!! I had my interview and then boom - disqualified! I cried all night thinking I was totally screwed. But then I checked again two days later and everything was fixed and switched to paid. EDD systems are WEIRD. Just give it a couple days before freaking out (like I did lol

I've seen this happen with several clients. The system sometimes shows an interim status while the final determination is being processed. Here's what's likely happening: 1. During/after your interview, the interviewer put notes in the system 2. The claim is temporarily marked disqualified while those notes are reviewed by a claims processor 3. The final determination will typically appear within 2-5 business days However, I always recommend calling to verify rather than just waiting, especially with rent due soon. The challenge is that EDD phone lines are constantly overwhelmed. Most people spend days trying to get through. I've had several clients use Claimyr (claimyr.com) to connect with EDD agents quickly. They have a service that helps you bypass the busy signals and connect directly to an agent who can check your claim status. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Getting definitive answers directly from an agent will give you peace of mind rather than just hoping it resolves itself.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I've been trying to call all morning with no luck - just getting the "too many callers" message. I'll check out that Claimyr service. At this point I'd do anything to get some answers before my rent is due.

don't waste your time calling edd theyll never pick up. your disqualified becuz you probably said something wrong in the interview. what did they ask you exactly?? the trick is to make sure you were laid off and not fired for any reason. if you told them you were fired or quit then your screwed

I definitely told them I was laid off due to department restructuring, which is true. The interviewer didn't seem to have any issues with that. She just verified dates and asked for some details about my final weeks of work. I didn't say anything about being fired or quitting.

This is incorrect information. A disqualification status appearing immediately after an interview is often a processing status, not a final determination. Also, being fired doesn't automatically disqualify you - it depends on the reason. Only misconduct-related terminations typically result in disqualification. Please don't spread misinformation that causes unnecessary panic.

I used to work at EDD (not anymore thank goodness). The system DOES update that quickly after interviews, but it's important to understand that the interviewer doesn't make the final decision. They conduct the interview, enter notes, and then a claims processor reviews everything before making a determination. That's why you're seeing this temporary status. My suggestion - don't panic yet, but do try to contact them for clarification. The status could change automatically within a few days, but getting confirmation will help your peace of mind. If your reason for separation truly was a layoff due to restructuring and your employer confirms this, you should be eligible.

Thank you so much for this insider perspective! It's really helpful to understand how the process works. I'll keep trying to contact them, and hopefully, as others have mentioned, it will resolve itself soon.

UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know that my status changed from disqualified to paid this morning! It took exactly 3 days just like some of you said. What a relief! I guess it really was just a temporary status while they processed everything. Thanks to everyone who helped ease my mind during this stressful time.

Great news! I'm glad it resolved itself. This is definitely something EDD should communicate better to claimants - the random status changes without explanation cause so much unnecessary stress.
