EDD disqualification whiplash - approved then disqualified again in 24 hours!

I'm having the weirdest experience with EDD and I'm seriously stressing out. Applied for UI in early February after losing my restaurant management job. I asked to backdate my claim to January 20th when I was actually laid off (I was honestly just overwhelmed with job hunting and didn't file right away). EDD denied my backdate request saying my reason wasn't compelling, which I get - but then they went nuclear and disqualified me from ALL benefits, not just the backdated weeks! Never seen that before. Instead of appealing, I submitted a simple request for a copy of my determination letter through the Contact EDD feature. Surprisingly, whoever handled that request must have reviewed my case because they sent a message saying they OVERTURNED the disqualification and that I was now eligible with 5 certification weeks available. I was so relieved! Immediately certified for all 5 weeks last night, being super careful with my answers and documenting my work searches properly. Logged in this morning to check the status and somehow I'm showing DISQUALIFIED AGAIN?? What is happening? EDD office is closed today so I can't call. Has anyone experienced this bizarre flip-flopping? Could this be a system glitch or am I really disqualified again after briefly being approved?

Don't panic yet - this could be a system update delay. When I had my disqualification overturned, it took about 3 business days for all the systems to properly reflect the change. The EDD computer system is notorious for having different parts that don't communicate well with each other. The person who reviewed your case probably made the change in one system, but it hasn't fully propagated to the payment system yet. I would wait until tomorrow and call as soon as they open. Ask specifically for a tier 2 specialist who can see all aspects of your claim across different systems.

Thank you for this! That actually makes sense - I didn't consider system delays. I'll try to relax a bit and call first thing tomorrow. Do you think I should recertify for those weeks again or just leave it alone until I talk to someone?

Your situation is EXACTLY why i always tell people to APPEAL EVERYTHING with EDD! They make these arbitrary decisions and even when they fix them they mess it up again. I got disqualified for "voluntary quit" even though my position was eliminated. Took 3 months and 30+ calls to get it fixed. The EDD rep who finally helped said my account had conflicting flags in it - one saying approved, one saying disqualified. Their system is a COMPLETE DISASTER. Good luck getting someone competent on the phone...

not evry thing needs an apeal tho, sometimes u just need 2 talk to the right person. my freind got her issue fixed with just 1 call but she used that claimyr service to get thru instead of calling herself

This happened to my brother too! His status changed from disqualified to eligible and back to disqualified in the same week. Turned out it was because two different EDD reps were working on his case at the same time and overrode each other's decisions. When he finally talked to someone, they explained there was a note about eligibility in one part of his file but the payment system still had the disqualification code. So weird!

That's so frustrating! How long did it take for your brother to get it resolved? I'm worried about bills coming up...

I've seen this issue quite a few times when helping people with claims. This is what's likely happening: When the EDD rep overturned your disqualification, they reactivated your claim and made weeks available to certify. However, when you certified for those weeks, the system probably flagged something in your certification answers that triggered an auto-disqualification. The most common reasons are: 1. Indicating you weren't available for full-time work on any day 2. Reporting school attendance without clarifying it doesn't interfere with work 3. Not reporting work search activities properly 4. Answering "no" to whether you looked for work Check your certification entries carefully. You might need to call and have a rep review your specific certifications to see what triggered the new disqualification.

I double-checked all my certifications and I'm 99% sure I answered everything correctly. I said yes to looking for work, listed 3 job contacts per week, didn't report any school or unavailability... it's so frustrating not knowing what's wrong!

After spending literally 5 WEEKS trying to reach EDD about my disqualification issue, I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a rep. They have this service that gets you a callback from EDD usually within an hour. I was skeptical but desperate and tried it - sure enough I got a call from an EDD rep about 40 minutes later! They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km In my case, it turned out there was a flag on my account that kept auto-disqualifying me even after a supervisor had approved my claim. The rep I spoke to had to manually override something. Might be worth trying since your situation sounds similar.

I've heard about this service but wasn't sure if it was legit. How does it actually work? Did they need a bunch of personal info? I hate giving out my SSN to random websites.

@system_critic It connects you directly to EDD - they don't ask for your SSN or claim details, just contact info for the callback. The EDD rep calls YOU, so you give your personal info directly to EDD like normal. It just bypasses the busy signals and 'too many callers' messages.

i just went thru soemthing similar!!! the online system is SO GLITCHY with statuses. i certified for 4 weeks that all said pending then suddenly 2 went to paid and 2 to disqualifed even tho i answerd all the questions the exact same way!! what ended upp hapening was there was a "stop payment alert" on my account for some reason. took calling everyday for a week to get someone to remove it. edd is such a nightmare

That's interesting about the 'stop payment alert' - wonder if that's what's happening to me too. Did they tell you why it was there in the first place?

they said it was becus of a "quarterly review flag" whatever that means?? the lady said someting about how when a quarter changes they do auto reviews and sometimes theres flags that get stuck. idk it was all confusing but she fixed it

One other thing - when did your benefit year begin? If your claim crosses a calendar quarter boundary (like from Dec 2024 to Jan 2025), sometimes EDD's system automatically initiates a new eligibility review. This could explain why you had that initial disqualification, then someone manually approved you, but then the system re-triggered the disqualification when you certified. When you call, specifically ask if there's a quarterly review flag or any automated processes affecting your claim. Request to speak with a claims specialist who can see these technical details. Regular tier 1 agents sometimes can't see all the system notes.

My benefit year started in February 2025, but the backdated weeks I requested would have been in January 2025. That's a good point about the quarter change! I'll definitely ask about that specifically when I call. Thank you for the detailed explanation.

UPDATE: I managed to get through to EDD this morning after about an hour of trying. The rep confirmed this is a known issue with claims that have been manually overturned - there's some kind of lag in their systems. For anyone facing something similar, here's what she said needs to happen: 1. The determination reversal has to be processed in their main database 2. Then it has to update in the payment system 3. Then any weeks that were previously disqualified need manual intervention The rep said it can take 5-7 business days for all systems to sync up after a manual reversal. She put a note on my account and said I should see movement within 48 hours.

Wait - are you me? I haven't updated this thread yet! Did you have a similar situation happen to you too?

Oh! I'm so sorry - I thought I was responding to my own thread from last week! My situation was very similar to yours and I got confused when I saw this post. But the information is still accurate - that's exactly what the EDD rep told me about my claim when I had the same disqualification flip-flop issue. Hope it helps!

UPDATE: Finally got through to EDD this morning! The representative confirmed it WAS a system issue. Apparently when my disqualification was overturned, it wasn't fully processed in all their systems. The person who reviewed my case made the change in their case management system, but it didn't properly sync with the payment system. The rep had to manually override the disqualification codes in the payment system and said my payments should process within 48-72 hours. She also said this happens fairly often with manually overturned determinations - the different EDD computer systems don't communicate well with each other. For anyone dealing with something similar, make sure you specifically ask if all systems show the same status for your claim!

Glad you got it sorted out! Did they give you any kind of confirmation number or reference for the fix? ALWAYS get a confirmation number with EDD - I've had them "fix" things multiple times only to have no record of it later.

Yes! I definitely learned that lesson - I got the rep's ID number and a service request number for the manual override. She also said she added detailed notes to my account about what happened and what she did to fix it.
