Money Network card questions - reopening EDD claim after temp job ends

Just found out my seasonal warehouse position is ending this Saturday and I'm planning to reopen my existing claim this Sunday (4/14/25). My original claim doesn't expire until September 2025, so I should be able to just reactivate it. I've been working since January, but before that I was receiving benefits on a B of A card. Now I hear Money Network has taken over for EDD payments? How does this transition work? Will they automatically send me a new Money Network card when I reopen my claim, or do I need to request one somewhere in UI Online? Do they use the same mailing address they have on file? This is my first time dealing with the Money Network switch and I'm worried about any delays getting my benefits. Any info on the process would be super helpful!

Same thing happened to me in February. Once your claim is reopened and they process your first certification, Money Network automatically sends out a new card. Took about 10 business days to arrive for me. Just make sure your mailing address is updated in your UI Online account BEFORE you reopen the claim. The old B of A card won't work anymore.

Thanks! That's a relief. I'll double-check my address is current before reopening on Sunday. Did you have any issues transferring funds once you got the card?

they dont send it automaticly u have to call money network and request a new debit card after u file for benifits. the number is on edd website. took them 3 weeks to send mine cuz they kept saying they mailed it but nothing showed up. total nightmere!!!!

This is incorrect information. You do NOT need to call Money Network to request a card when reopening a claim. EDD automatically triggers the card issuance after your first payment is approved. The only time you need to contact Money Network directly is if your card is lost/stolen or never arrives after 10-14 business days. Please be careful about spreading misinformation that could cause unnecessary stress for claimants.

Make sure u certify on time after reopening!!! I reopened my claim last month and forgot to certify for 3 weeks and almost lost my benefits. The money network card came about 8 days after my first payment was processed. You can also set up direct deposit now instead of using the card, which is what I did... much easier!

Good reminder about certification! I'll set a reminder on my phone. I didn't realize direct deposit was an option now - might look into that instead of dealing with another card.

When you reopen your claim, there are a few important things to know about the Money Network transition: 1. Once your first payment is processed, Money Network will automatically mail a card to your address on file. 2. You'll receive an email notification when the card has been mailed. 3. You can choose direct deposit instead by going to your UI Online account → Payment Methods → Select Direct Deposit and enter your bank information. 4. If you don't receive your card within 14 days of your first payment being issued, you should contact Money Network customer service at 1-888-373-7337. 5. Your old B of A card won't receive any new deposits, but you can still use any remaining funds on it until the expiration date. Hope this helps clarify the process!

This is exactly what I needed to know - thank you! I think I'll try the direct deposit option since it seems more straightforward than waiting for another card.

the whole money network switch is a disaster. i had to wait almost A MONTH to get my card!!!!! and then had to wait on hold for 3 hours to activate it!!!! edd is a joke

Same. The system is so broken. I spent 2 weeks trying to contact someone about my missing card and kept getting disconnected. Such a waste of time.

BTW if you need to actually TALK to an EDD rep about your claim (which you probably will at some point), I used Claimyr last month and it was a lifesaver. They get you through to an actual human at EDD without the endless busy signals. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Totally worth it after I spent 3 days trying to get through myself and kept getting the "too many callers" message.

I second this. Used Claimyr when I had an issue with my reopened claim showing "pending" for weeks. The service got me through to EDD in about 20 minutes when I had been trying for days on my own.

To add some clarity about the reopening process and Money Network cards: When you reopen your claim, you'll go through a brief questionnaire similar to your initial application but much shorter. Since you're reopening within your benefit year, your weekly benefit amount will remain the same. After reopening, you'll need to serve a one-week waiting period if you haven't already served one during this benefit year. This means your first certification will cover two weeks, but you'll only receive payment for one of those weeks. Regarding Money Network: While they do automatically issue cards after your first payment is processed, I recommend selecting direct deposit when you reopen. It's now fully implemented and payments typically arrive 1-2 days after certification is approved.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I did serve a waiting period when I first applied last year, so hopefully I won't need to do that again. I'm definitely going to set up direct deposit - seems much simpler than dealing with another card.

anyone knows if the money network card works at atms??? my old b of a card was free at certainplaces but i had to pay fees at some atms.

Yes, the Money Network card can be used at ATMs. You get one free ATM withdrawal per deposit at MoneyPass ATMs (there's a locator on the Money Network website). Additional withdrawals or using non-MoneyPass ATMs will result in fees. You can also get cash back for free when making purchases at many stores.

Update: Just wanted to thank everyone for the helpful advice! I reopened my claim yesterday and selected direct deposit instead of the card option. The process was much smoother than I expected - took about 15 minutes total. Now I just need to wait for my first certification period. Really appreciate all the information!

Glad to hear it went smoothly! Remember that your certification will be available 12:01 AM on the Sunday after your reopening is processed. Setting up UI Online notifications in your account settings is helpful so you don't miss any certification periods.
