EDD Money Network card delivery after approval & how to extend claim expiring in June?
Hi everyone, I'm in a bit of a confusing situation with my EDD claim. I got approved recently (after waiting FOREVER), but I still have my old Bank of America EDD debit card from my previous claim in 2022. I know EDD switched to Money Network cards, but I haven't received anything new in the mail. Does anyone know if they automatically send the new Money Network card once you're approved? Or do I need to request it somehow? Also, my reopened claim is set to expire in late June 2025 (only about 8 weeks away). How do I get it extended? Do I need to file a brand new claim or is there some kind of extension process? I'm really worried about having a gap in payments. Thanks for any help you can provide!

they do automaticaly mail you the money network card after approval. mine took about 7-9 days to arrive. but you have to activate it on the Money Network website not thru EDD!! for the extension thing im not sure, never had to do that.

•Thanks for the info about the card. Do you remember if they sent any kind of notification before sending the card? I'm worried it might get lost in the mail since my mailbox isn't very secure.

For your first question: Yes, the Money Network card is automatically mailed to you once your claim is approved and your first payment is processed. You don't need to request it. The typical timeline is 7-10 business days after your first payment is issued. Regarding your claim extension: You can't technically "extend" a regular UI claim beyond its benefit year end date (which appears to be late June in your case). When your benefit year expires, you'll need to file a completely new claim if you're still unemployed. The system should prompt you to file a new claim when you try to certify after your benefit year ends. I recommend filing the new claim a few days before your current one expires to minimize any payment gaps. Just be prepared to provide all your employment information for the past 18 months again.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! So there's no way to extend my current claim period even if I still have a balance left? That seems wasteful but I guess that's how it works. Should I call EDD before filing a new claim or just do it online when prompted?

Regarding your Money Network card: Once EDD processes your first payment, the card will be automatically sent to your mailing address on file. Make sure your address is current in your UI Online account. If you don't receive it within 10 business days after your first payment is issued, you should contact Money Network directly at 1-888-233-5916. As for extending your claim: When a benefit year ends, a new claim must be filed even if you have a remaining balance. The remaining balance cannot be carried over. This is because EDD needs to verify if you've earned enough wages during your base period to qualify for a new claim. You can file a new claim online through UI Online a few days before your current benefit year expires. This helps minimize gaps in your payments. After filing, you may be required to serve a one-week waiting period for the new claim.

•Not OP but this is super helpful info! Do you know if they send the Money Network card via regular mail or is it like certified mail where you have to sign for it? My mailbox gets broken into sometimes.

I had THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM with the card situation!! When my claim was approved in March, I waited and waited for the Money Network card because I also had the old BofA card from years ago. After 2 weeks I tried calling EDD - IMPOSSIBLE TO GET THROUGH!!! Then I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes instead of spending all day calling. The rep confirmed my card was already sent but gave me the direct Money Network number to call. Turns out my card was sent to my old address even though I updated my address with EDD! You can see how their service works here: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Definitely worth it since trying to reach EDD directly is a nightmare.

•Thanks for the tip! I've been trying to call EDD for days with no luck. Did the Money Network people help you get a new card sent or did you have to go through EDD for that? I might try that Claimyr service if I don't see the card soon.

EDD is such a disaster with these cards!!! I was approved in January and didn't get my Money Network card until MARCH even though they claimed they sent it twice before. Meanwhile my rent was late and I got hit with fees. No one at EDD seems to care that people need their money to LIVE ON!! And for your claim extension question - they make everything so complicated on purpose. You can't just "extend" a claim like a normal, logical system would allow. You have to file a whole new claim and pray you qualify again. And of course there's usually a gap in payments while they process the new claim. It's like they WANT people to suffer!

•omg same!!! took them 5 weeks to get me my card and then another 2 weeks to fix a "payment verification issue" whatever that means. the whole system needs to be redone tbh

My brother had this same issue last month with the Money Network card. It does come automatically but sometimes there are delays. He called Money Network directly (not EDD) and they were actually pretty helpful! Said the card had been mailed but gave him status updates. For your June expiration, start a new claim about 3-4 days before the old one expires. That's what my neighbor did and it worked out ok for her.

•Thanks! Did your brother have to verify his identity again with Money Network or was all that information already transferred from EDD? I'm going to try calling them directly.

To answer your follow-up question: No, you cannot extend a claim that's reaching its benefit year end date, even if there's a balance remaining. The balance unfortunately doesn't carry over. It's best to file online when prompted. You'll see a notice in UI Online when your benefit year is ending. Filing online is generally faster than calling, and you can do it 24/7. However, if you have special circumstances or wages that might not be in their system, calling might be necessary. One important note: You must have earned enough wages in your new base period to qualify for a new claim. If you haven't worked since your last claim began, you might not qualify for a new regular UI claim.

•That's really helpful, thank you. I did work for about 4 months between claims, so hopefully that's enough to qualify. I'll file online as soon as I see the prompt in the system. Really appreciate the clear explanation!
