Money Network card delivery timeline & transfer options after EDD payment approval

Finally got my unemployment payments approved yesterday after filing on March 13th. The system shows 'paid' status for the weeks I just certified, but I still don't have a Money Network card to access the funds! I served my first week as excessive earnings (had some leftover vacation pay), then had a waiting period week, and now my claim is active. Here's my confusion: 1. How long typically before the Money Network card arrives in the mail? 2. I called Money Network customer service and they said I'm not in their system yet?? 3. Once I get the card, how many days does it take to transfer funds to my personal bank account? 4. Is it safer/faster to request paper checks instead of using the card? 5. If I certify on Sunday and request a check, when should I expect it in the mail? 6. Random question but what bank issues the EDD checks anyway? I'm getting anxious because I've got bills due next week and need to know when I'll actually have access to this money. Any insight from folks who've recently been through this?

The Money Network card usually takes 7-10 business days to arrive after your first payment is processed. Since your payment just went through yesterday, I'd expect the card around the first week of April. Don't worry about Money Network not having you in their system yet - there's often a 1-2 day delay between EDD approving payment and Money Network receiving your info to create the card account. Once you get the card, transfers to your bank account typically take 2-3 business days. The card is generally the fastest option vs paper checks. If you need funds urgently, you can actually call Money Network once your card is in their system (try again tomorrow) and request expedited delivery of your card for a fee (around $10-15).

Thanks for the timeline! That helps a lot. Do you know if there's any way to check if Money Network has received my info yet without calling them again? Their phone system is brutal to navigate.

Ugggh the inconsistency is what makes this so stressful! Did you get any kind of email notification when they shipped the card?

I requested paper checks instead of the card because I had my identity stolen a few years ago and I'm paranoid about cards. The checks came about 4-5 days after certification. They're drawn on Bank of America (they handle the payment processing for EDD). One thing to note - if you switch to paper checks now, it might delay your current payment while they process the change. So if you need money ASAP, stick with the card for now and you can change your preference later. Also be aware that BofA and Money Network are different systems. The old unemployment used BofA cards, but since 2023 they use Money Network. So if you had unemployment before that, that's why you saw money in BofA.

That explains why I was confused about the BofA account! I had a claim during covid and it went to that card. So they switched to Money Network completely? No wonder I couldn't find any new deposits in my old account.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A JOKE!!! I waited almost THREE WEEKS for my Money Network card and when it finally came, it was impossible to activate! Their website kept crashing and when I finally got through on the phone after TWO HOURS on hold, they said my card was flagged for "security reasons" and I had to verify my identity AGAIN even though I already did the ID.me verification with EDD!!!! Just be prepared for a nightmare. Print screenshots of everything. Document every call. The left hand doesn't know what the right is doing over there.

same thing happened to my nephew! the verification thing is ridiculous, he had to send photos of his drivers license 3 different times before they would activate his card

To answer your question about checking if you're in Money Network's system without calling - unfortunately there isn't a way to check online before you have the card. Their online account creation requires the actual card number. But you can try calling EDD directly to confirm they've transmitted your payment info to Money Network. If you can get through to a rep, they can sometimes see on their end if the transfer of information has occurred.

If you need to reach EDD quickly about this, try using Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was in a similar situation last month - needed to find out why my payments were delayed and couldn't get through on the regular line. Claimyr connected me to an EDD rep in about 15 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. They have a video demo of how it works here: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The EDD rep was able to confirm my payment had been sent to Money Network and gave me the exact date my card was mailed out. Saved me a ton of stress.

That's really helpful, thank you! I'm going to check that out because waiting around with no information is making me anxious. Did the EDD rep have any ability to expedite the card delivery when you called?

I believe u can set up direct deposit after u get ur card so u dont need to transfer money manually each time. That's what I did and now my bi-weekly payments go straight to my checking acct without me having to do anything. Took like 2 days to set up after I activated my card. U should double check this on the EDD site tho cause they change things all the time lol

This is correct. Once you activate your Money Network card, you can log into the Money Network account portal and set up direct deposit to your bank account. For future payments, you can choose to have them automatically transferred to your bank instead of loaded onto the card. One important note: the first payment will always go to the card, then you can set up the automatic transfers for subsequent payments. And yes, the direct deposit setup typically takes 1-3 business days to verify and activate.

My wife had the same issue last month waiting for a Money Network card. Took 9 business days to arrive. Not sure about the checks, but when we finally got the card set up, transfers to our bank took 2 business days exactly both times we did it. One weird thing - the envelope with the card looks like junk mail. Very plain with not much indication it's important. Almost threw it away by accident!

Oh wow, thanks for the heads up about the envelope! I'll be sure to check ALL my mail carefully. 9 business days sounds about right based on what others are saying too.

i think my brother wated like a week and a half for his card i remember him complaining about it lol. but once he got it he said the money transfers were pretty fast like 2 days or something

Just wanted to add one more thing - if your need for funds is truly urgent (rent due, utilities about to be shut off, etc.), you can request an emergency payment at an EDD office in person. You'd need to explain your hardship situation, but they do have provisions for people who are in dire financial circumstances and can't wait for the card. You would need to bring multiple forms of ID and your claim paperwork. This is a last resort option, but it does exist if you're in a really tight spot.

I didn't know that was even an option! I should be okay for another week, but if the card doesn't show up by then, I might have to consider this. Do you happen to know if I need an appointment for the in-person EDD office visit?

Omar Hassan

•

Yes, you generally need an appointment for in-person services at EDD offices. You can schedule one through the UI Online portal in your account, or by calling the EDD appointment line. Some offices do accept walk-ins, but the wait can be extremely long without an appointment. Before going through all that trouble though, I'd recommend trying to reach an EDD representative by phone first to confirm if your Money Network card has been issued yet and get an estimated delivery date.
