Mistake on boyfriend's EDD application - wrong name entered! Can I fix in person or must he call?
I helped my boyfriend file his initial UI claim online last week and I think I really messed up... I accidentally entered his name wrong (I typed his middle name as his last name and his actual last name as his middle name). Now I'm panicking because his verification documents obviously won't match the application. He's at work all day and can't call EDD during their hours, and I feel terrible since this was totally my fault. Has anyone dealt with fixing name errors on applications? Can I go to an EDD office in person to fix this for him since I'm the one who caused the problem? Or does he absolutely have to call himself? Super worried this will delay his benefits or cause his claim to be denied entirely!

•Ugh that's what I was afraid of. He works construction 7-4 and can't really step away to make calls. I feel so stupid for messing this up.

Unfortunately, this is a situation where your boyfriend will need to contact EDD directly himself. It's considered identity information, so for security reasons, they won't discuss or modify his claim details with anyone else, even if you're physically present at an office. He should call the EDD customer service line at 1-800-300-5616 as soon as possible. Name errors can indeed cause problems with identity verification and potentially delay benefits. When he calls, he should explain it was a simple error during application and provide the correct information. If he can't call during regular business hours, he might be able to take a short break during lunch or ask his supervisor for 15 minutes to make this important call. It's worth addressing quickly before it causes verification issues.

•Thank you for explaining. I'll let him know he absolutely needs to make the call. Do you know if they'll need any specific documents to verify the correction? Should he have his ID and SSN card ready?

I had a similar issue last year when I filed - misspelled my own last name (fat-fingered the keyboard). Here's exactly what worked for me: 1. Your boyfriend needs to call 1-800-300-5616 2. Have his ID, SSN card, and claim confirmation number ready 3. The rep will ask security questions to verify his identity 4. They'll update the system right while he's on the phone 5. They'll likely send him an updated notice by mail or in his UI Online inbox The key is to get this fixed BEFORE the ID verification step happens. If the names don't match, it can trigger fraud flags that are much harder to resolve. If he absolutely can't call during their hours, he could try the UI Online message center, but honestly, calling is 10x faster for name corrections.

•I agree with this! Calling is DEFINITELY faster than trying to message them. When I messaged about my address change last month it took 3 WEEKS to get a response!!! For a simple name error like this, phone is the only way to go.

This happened to me!! But it was the stupid ID.me verification that got messed up not my actual claim. My advice - DONT LET THIS SIT!! The longer it goes the worse it gets. My husband had to miss half a day of work to call them and it took SEVEN CALLS before he even got through because of the "we're experiencing high call volume" message. They fixed it but it delayed my payments by almost a month which was a nightmare. Does your boyfriend get any breaks at all during the day where he could call? Or maybe he could go in late one day or leave early just to make this call? It's really important!

•Seven calls?! That's crazy. He does get a lunch break but it's usually only 30 minutes. I guess he could try calling then but I'm worried he won't get through in that short time. Maybe he needs to take a half day off like your husband did...

I know how frustrating the EDD phone system can be, especially when you need to make important corrections like a name change. After spending weeks trying to reach someone at EDD with no success, I finally tried Claimyr (claimyr.com). It's a service that helps you get through to an EDD representative much faster than calling on your own. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km that shows how it works. Your boyfriend might want to check it out since his work schedule makes it hard to spend hours redialing. It helped me get through in about 20 minutes instead of spending days trying. The rep I spoke with fixed my address issue right away once I actually got through.

why is everyone maknig this so complicated?? just have him submit a correction form through UI Online. its under "contact EDD" then you pick "submit correction to claim" from the dropdown. thats how i fixed my birthdate when i put the wrong year. took like 5 days for them to fix it but no calling needed!!!

•I'm afraid that's not accurate information. While you can submit some corrections through UI Online, legal name corrections specifically require direct contact with an EDD representative by phone. Name corrections are treated differently from other updates due to identity verification requirements. Birthdate corrections might work through the portal for minor errors, but legal name changes or corrections follow a stricter protocol because they affect the claim's identity verification process.

I just realized something else! If you entered his middle name as his last name, the system might have issues matching his income records from his employer since those would be filed under his correct last name. This could cause problems with his claim amount calculation too, not just the ID verification! Another reason he needs to get this fixed ASAP!!

•Oh no, I didn't even think about that part! Now I'm even more worried. I'll make sure he understands how important this is to fix quickly.

Just wanted to add - when your boyfriend calls, he should be very clear that this was an application error and NOT a legal name change. Some reps might confuse this with a formal name change request (like after marriage or court order), which requires different documentation. Make sure he specifies it's just correcting a mistake on the initial application.

•That's a really good point! I'll make sure he's specific about it being an application error and not an actual name change request. Thank you!

Has he tried certifying for benefits yet? Just wondering if the system is already showing the wrong name when he logs in. Sometimes seeing the error on screen makes it more urgent to fix!

•He hasn't certified yet - we're still waiting for his account to be fully set up. I'm hoping we can get this fixed before it gets to that point!
