EDD paper certification mistake - can he initial correction or must use UI Online?
My boyfriend has been certifying for benefits by mail the last few weeks (his phone broke and he's been having issues with the library computers). On his latest certification form, he accidentally checked the wrong box for question #3 about refusing work. He realized right away it should be 'No' not 'Yes'. Can he just cross out the mistake and initial next to the correct box? Or does he have to submit a whole new form? He tried logging into UI Online at the library to fix it but kept getting some error message. I'm worried his payment will be delayed or he'll get flagged for an eligibility interview. Has anyone dealt with certification corrections before? What's the fastest way to fix this without causing problems with his claim?

DO NOT cross out or initial anything on EDD forms!!! My cousin did that last year and they flagged his whole account for fraud investigation and he got NO PAYMENTS for almost 2 months!!! The paper forms are scanned by computers not actual people. He needs to call EDD immediately and explain the mistake before they process the form and put a stop on his claim.

•OMG that sounds horrible! He's already stressed about rent coming up. Do you know if there's any way to get through to an actual person at EDD? He's been trying for days and just gets the 'too many callers' message.

Your boyfriend needs to contact EDD right away to explain the error. Marking 'Yes' to refusing work can trigger automatic disqualification for that certification period. Unfortunately, you can't just initial corrections on the paper form - they'll process it as submitted. Regarding the UI Online error, what specific message is he getting? It could be a password issue, account lock due to too many attempts, or a technical problem. If he can get into UI Online, he could potentially submit a new certification that would override the paper one if it hasn't been processed yet.

•Thx for explaining. He said the error was something about 'cannot access account at this time' after putting in his login info. He tried a different computer but got the same message. I'm going to have him try again tomorrow using my laptop.

•5 weeks?! We can't wait that long. Did calling help speed things up at all?

I had this exact issue in January. Here's what worked for me: 1. I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an EDD rep fast. They have this service that calls EDD for you and connects you when they reach an agent. Saved me hours of redial hell. Here's their demo video: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km 2. Once I got through to EDD, I explained my certification error, and the rep manually corrected it in their system. 3. My payment was processed normally the next day without any delays. Regarding the UI Online error - that sounds like a temporary system issue. Sometimes the EDD site does maintenance in the evenings. Try again during business hours.

•I was going to suggest Claimyr too! I used them last month during the big system update when nobody could get through. It worked perfectly - got connected to an EDD rep in about 40 min when I had been trying for DAYS on my own. The rep can definitely fix the certification error if you can just reach someone.

•His phone broke and the library computers weren't working with the EDD website (something about browser compatibility). Plus he said the paper forms seemed easier to understand for him. But you're right - online is definitely faster when it works!

You should definitely contact EDD to explain the situation. For UI Online errors, try clearing browser cache and cookies, or use an incognito/private browsing window. EDD's website can be finicky with certain browsers. Also, don't use a VPN if you're on one - EDD blocks most VPN connections for security reasons.

•Thank you! I'll have him try the incognito window trick. He was using Chrome at the library so maybe that's part of the issue.

How long ago did he mail the certification? If it was very recent (1-2 days ago), he could try submitting an online certification immediately that might process before the paper one. But the safest option is still to speak with an EDD representative who can note the error in the system.

•He mailed it Monday (3 days ago), so probably too late for that approach. I think we're going to try that Claimyr service that someone mentioned above to get through to EDD. Seems like talking to a rep is the only reliable fix at this point.

btw if u do get an eligibility interview scheduled dont panic, just make sure he answers honestly. i got scared and almost didnt answer their call but its actually pretty quick and the interviewer was nice about my mistake

•That's reassuring. I hope we can fix it before it gets to that point, but it's good to know the interviews aren't as scary as they sound. Thanks!

I work at a benefits advocacy organization and deal with EDD certification errors regularly. Here's my advice: 1. DO NOT modify the paper form in any way - as others mentioned, this will trigger fraud flags 2. The "cannot access account" error often happens when there are multiple failed login attempts or if the account needs verification. Try having him reset his password first 3. If UI Online still doesn't work, Claimyr is definitely your best bet for reaching EDD quickly 4. When he does speak to a rep, have him explain it was an honest mistake made immediately after checking the wrong box - they can usually note this in the system and prevent payment delays Most importantly, act fast! The sooner EDD knows about the error, the less likely it is to cause major delays. I've seen similar situations resolved within 24-48 hours when people contact EDD proactively rather than waiting for the system to flag it. Good luck to your boyfriend - this kind of mistake is more common than you'd think and EDD reps are usually understanding about it.

•This is exactly the kind of expert advice we needed! Thank you so much for taking the time to explain everything. I'm going to have him try resetting his password first thing tomorrow morning, and if that doesn't work we'll definitely use Claimyr to get through to EDD. It's such a relief to hear that this mistake is fixable and that the reps are usually understanding about it. Really appreciate you sharing your professional experience with this!

I went through something similar last year when I accidentally marked "Yes" to the work search question when I meant "No". The stress was unreal! Here's what I learned: First, don't panic - this happens more often than you'd think. I ended up calling EDD (took forever to get through) and the rep was actually really helpful. She explained that they see these kinds of honest mistakes all the time and can usually fix them quickly once you explain what happened. The key is being proactive about it. When I finally got through to someone, I explained exactly what happened - that I realized the mistake immediately after marking it - and she made a note in my file. My payment went through normally the next week. One tip that worked for me with UI Online: try logging in at different times of day. I had the same "cannot access account" error during peak hours (mornings and evenings), but it worked fine when I tried around 2-3 PM on a weekday. The system gets overloaded during busy times. Also seconding what others said about Claimyr - wish I had known about that service when I was dealing with my issue! Would have saved me hours of redialing. Your boyfriend will get through this! The mistake is fixable, just don't wait too long to contact them.

•Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It's really comforting to hear from someone who went through the exact same thing. I was getting so anxious reading about fraud flags and payment delays, but hearing that the EDD rep was understanding gives me hope. I'll definitely have him try logging into UI Online during off-peak hours like you suggested - that's a great tip I hadn't thought of. The timing makes total sense since everyone probably tries to access it first thing in the morning or after work. Really appreciate you taking the time to reassure us that this is fixable!

I had a similar panic moment when I accidentally marked the wrong box on question #6 about earnings. Here's what worked for me - I used the EDD Contact page on their website to submit an "Ask EDD" message explaining the mistake. I got a response within 3 business days and they fixed it without any payment delays or interviews. The online message system is sometimes faster than calling, especially for simple corrections like this. Just log into your UI Online account (once you get it working), go to Contact Us, and select "Certification Questions" as the topic. Be specific about which question you answered incorrectly and what the correct answer should be. If he still can't access UI Online, definitely try that password reset first like the admin suggested. Sometimes the account gets temporarily locked after failed login attempts and a reset clears it right up. Don't stress too much - EDD knows people make honest mistakes on these forms and they have processes in place to handle corrections. The fact that he caught it right away shows it wasn't intentional.
