Made mistake during NY unemployment phone certification - said I didn't return to work

I seriously messed up my unemployment certification yesterday. When filing over the phone, I accidentally answered 'no' when they asked if I returned to work (I did go back). The system processed my claim with the wrong info, and now I'm worried about getting in trouble for claiming benefits I'm not eligible for. I've called like 20 times trying to fix this but can't get through to anyone. Is there a direct number to fix certification mistakes? Does anyone know what happens now? Will they think I'm committing fraud??

omg the same thing happened to me last month!! dont panic too much, there's ways to fix it. u need to keep trying the main number or try to reach them thru the message center on ur account

How long did it take you to get through? I've been trying since 8am this morning and nothing but busy signals or disconnects.

This is a common problem with phone certification. You need to do two things immediately: 1. Document the error by sending a message through your online account's secure message center explaining exactly what happened and when 2. Continue trying to reach a claims specialist at 888-209-8124 Don't panic - this isn't considered fraud if you take steps to correct it right away. You'll likely need to repay any benefits received in error, but there shouldn't be penalties if you're proactive.

Thank you! I just sent a message through the portal. Do you know if they actually read those messages quickly? I'm so worried about this.

They typically review messages within 3-5 business days. Keep that documentation showing you tried to fix the error immediately. This helps protect you when they process the correction.

The same exact thing happened to me last year! I was actually SHAKING thinking they were going to come after me for fraud!!! I couldn't sleep for days and kept imagining the worst possible scenarios. What if they audit me? What if they think I'm lying when I say it was a mistake? What if they make me pay back EVERYTHING with penalties?? The phone system is so confusing!!

Classic NYSDOL... they make everything SO complicated and then punish US when we make the tiniest mistake! Meanwhile they can take 6 months to fix THEIR errors without any consequences 🙄

So what happened in your case? Were you able to fix it? Did they charge you penalties???

I finally got through after THREE DAYS of calling constantly. They fixed it but I had to pay back the week I wasn't entitled to. No penalties though since I reported it quickly!

After dealing with this exact situation twice last year, I found a service called Claimyr that got me through to an agent in under 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days. They basically call for you and transfer you when they get a rep. Saved me so much stress! There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Regarding your specific issue - make sure to emphasize it was an unintentional error during the phone certification. They deal with this all the time and have a process for corrections.

does this really work? ive been trying to get through for 2 weeks about a different issue

It worked for me both times I used it. Much better than spending days redialing constantly. The second time I got connected in about 15 minutes.

I'll try anything at this point. Just watched the video and it makes sense. Did they still help you even though you made a mistake on your claim?

Yes, they were actually pretty understanding. The agent I spoke with said certification mistakes happen all the time with the phone system. As long as you're honest and report it promptly, they just fix it and move on.

Benefits Specialist here. This is what you need to know: 1. This is classified as a "certification error" not fraud, provided you report it immediately 2. Document everything - dates, times, and methods you've used trying to contact them 3. You'll need to complete form TC-FOC (Certification Error Correction) which can be submitted through your online account 4. Continue trying to reach an agent at the main number (888-209-8124) 5. If you receive payment, DO NOT SPEND IT - you will need to return it The correction process typically takes 7-10 business days once you reach an agent. If you can't get through by phone after multiple attempts, try visiting your nearest NY Career Center in person with your documentation.

Thank you for the detailed information! I've been looking everywhere for form TC-FOC but can't find it on my online account. Where exactly is it located?

You'll find it under "Forms and Documents" then "Claim Maintenance." If you don't see it there, it may have been moved in their recent portal update. In that case, you can request it through the secure message center by specifically asking for the "TC-FOC Certification Error Correction Form.

my cousin works at walmart and says they got a special unemployment hotline number for employees... not helpful for u but why dont they have special numbers for everyone??

Because NYSDOL is stuck in 2002!!! They probably still use fax machines and Windows XP computers. The whole system is designed to make us give up!

UPDATE: I finally got through using that Claimyr service mentioned above! The agent was super helpful and said this happens all the time with the phone system. They've corrected my certification and I just need to pay back the incorrect payment once it posts to my account. No penalties since I reported it right away! Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!

That's amazing! So relieved for you! How long did the whole process take?

Great outcome! For anyone else reading this thread in the future, always report certification errors immediately - the longer you wait, the more likely you are to face penalties or be flagged for fraud review.

Glad to hear you got it resolved! This thread is super helpful for anyone dealing with certification errors. Just want to add that it's worth keeping a record of the correction for your files - screenshot the updated certification status or save any confirmation numbers they give you. I learned this the hard way when I had a different issue and they asked me to prove I'd already reported something months later. Better safe than sorry with NYSDOL!

This is such a stressful situation but you're definitely not alone! I went through something similar a few months ago where I mixed up my answers during phone certification. The anxiety was terrible - I kept imagining worst-case scenarios too. But like others have said, the key is acting quickly to fix it, which you're already doing. One thing that helped me was writing down exactly what happened and when, so I had all the details ready when I finally got through to an agent. Also, if you do end up having to repay anything, ask if they offer payment plans - they're usually pretty reasonable about it. The whole system is honestly confusing and these mistakes happen more often than you'd think. You're being proactive about fixing it, which is what matters most!

This is really reassuring to hear! I've been beating myself up thinking I'm the only one who's made such a stupid mistake. Writing down all the details is great advice - I actually started a little log with dates and times of when I've tried calling, plus screenshots of the messages I sent through the portal. Definitely going to ask about payment plans if needed. Thanks for sharing your experience, it helps knowing others have been through this and come out okay!

I'm new to this community but dealing with a similar issue right now! I accidentally answered wrong during my phone certification last week and have been panicking ever since. Reading through everyone's experiences here is such a relief - I was convinced I was going to get in serious trouble. I've been trying the main number constantly but keep getting disconnected. Going to try that Claimyr service mentioned and also send a message through the secure portal like others suggested. It's so frustrating that the phone system is so confusing in the first place, but at least now I know I'm not the only one who's made this mistake and that there are ways to fix it. Thanks everyone for sharing your stories and advice!

Welcome to the community! You're definitely not alone in this - it seems like the phone certification system trips up a lot of people. I'm dealing with something similar myself and found this thread super helpful. The fact that you're addressing it immediately is really important. From what I've read here, acting quickly is key to avoiding any fraud flags. Have you tried calling first thing in the morning? I've heard 8am is sometimes the best time to get through, though it's still hit or miss. The Claimyr service that @de00b5f67618 mentioned seems to be working for people who are having trouble getting through the regular way. Keep us posted on how it goes - your experience might help the next person who finds themselves in this situation!

I'm going through this exact same situation right now and this thread has been a lifesaver! I made the same mistake during phone certification two days ago - accidentally said I didn't return to work when I actually did. I've been absolutely terrified about potential fraud charges and couldn't sleep last night. Reading everyone's experiences here shows me I'm not alone and there's actually a clear path to fix this. I immediately sent a message through the secure portal after reading @db958ca6c97e's advice, and I'm going to keep trying the phone number while also looking into that Claimyr service @de00b5f67618 mentioned. It's so reassuring to see that @f5ca75619235 got their issue resolved without penalties by acting quickly. That gives me hope! I'm documenting everything like others suggested - keeping a log of all my attempts to contact them and screenshots of my messages. Hopefully I can get through to someone soon and get this straightened out. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences and advice!

You're definitely doing all the right things! I'm new here too but went through something similar recently. The anxiety is totally understandable - I was convinced they were going to think I was trying to scam the system. But from everything I've read in this thread and my own experience, as long as you're proactive about reporting it (which you clearly are), they treat it as an honest mistake rather than fraud. The documentation approach is smart - I wish I had thought to keep a log when I was dealing with my issue. It sounds like you're being way more organized about it than I was! Definitely try the Claimyr service if the regular number keeps giving you trouble. The waiting and not knowing is honestly the worst part, but it seems like most people here got it resolved once they actually reached an agent. Keep us updated on how it goes - your situation might help others who find themselves in the same boat!

I'm dealing with this exact same issue and honestly, reading through everyone's experiences here has been such a huge relief! I made a similar mistake during phone certification yesterday - got confused by the way they worded the question and gave the wrong answer about my work status. I've been spiraling with anxiety thinking I was going to face fraud charges or huge penalties. The step-by-step advice from @fc89033d6fb5 about documenting everything and looking for the TC-FOC form is incredibly helpful. I had no idea there was an actual form for certification errors! And seeing that @f5ca75619235 got their situation resolved without penalties by acting quickly gives me so much hope. I've already sent a message through the secure portal and I'm going to try that Claimyr service too since the regular phone line has been impossible. It's frustrating that the phone system is so confusing in the first place, but at least now I know there's a clear process to fix these mistakes. Thanks everyone for sharing your stories and creating such a supportive thread for people going through this stressful situation!

I'm so glad you found this thread helpful! I just discovered this community myself while searching for help with unemployment issues, and it's amazing how supportive everyone is here. Your situation sounds almost identical to what several people have gone through, which really shows how common these phone certification mix-ups are. The fact that you're taking action immediately by sending the secure message and planning to try Claimyr is exactly the right approach. From reading through all these experiences, it seems like the key really is that quick response time - it shows you're not trying to game the system, just genuinely made an error with their confusing phone prompts. I haven't had to deal with this specific issue myself yet (thankfully!), but I'm bookmarking all this advice just in case. The TC-FOC form information from @fc89033d6fb5 seems particularly valuable - I had no idea there were specific forms for different types of corrections. Keep us posted on how it goes with getting through to an agent. Your experience will definitely help the next person who finds themselves in this stressful situation!

Just wanted to chime in as someone who's been navigating the NY unemployment system for a while now. This thread is such a great resource for anyone dealing with certification errors! One additional tip I'd add based on my experience - if you do end up getting through to an agent, ask them to add a note to your file about the correction. This creates an additional paper trail that can be helpful if any questions come up later. I learned this from a really helpful agent who mentioned that internal notes help future representatives understand your situation faster. Also, for anyone still struggling to get through by phone, I've found that calling right at 8:00 AM on weekdays sometimes works better than calling later in the day. The hold times are still brutal, but I've had more luck actually connecting to the queue in those first few minutes after they open. It's really encouraging to see so many people sharing their experiences and helping each other out. The anxiety around these mistakes is so real, but threads like this show that most situations get resolved when you're proactive about fixing them. Keep supporting each other - navigating government systems is stressful enough without having to do it alone!

This is such great additional advice! The tip about asking agents to add notes to your file is brilliant - I never would have thought of that but it makes total sense for creating a proper paper trail. That's the kind of insider knowledge that can really make a difference when dealing with bureaucratic systems like this. I'm also bookmarking the 8 AM calling strategy. It's frustrating that we have to strategize just to reach someone, but at least there are people like you sharing what actually works! As a newcomer to both this community and the unemployment system, I'm really grateful for threads like this where experienced members share practical tips alongside the emotional support. The point about not having to navigate these stressful government systems alone really resonates with me. Just knowing that certification errors are common and fixable makes the whole process feel way less overwhelming. Thanks for adding these helpful details to an already incredibly useful discussion!

New to this community but currently dealing with a very similar certification error situation! I accidentally gave the wrong answer during phone certification three days ago and have been absolutely panicking about potential fraud charges. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been incredibly reassuring - it's clear that these phone system mix-ups happen way more often than I thought. I've already sent a detailed message through the secure portal explaining exactly what happened, and I'm planning to try the Claimyr service that several people mentioned since I can't get through the regular phone line. The advice about documenting everything and keeping a log of contact attempts is really smart. I've started tracking all my calls and screenshots of messages. It's also helpful to know about the TC-FOC form - I had no idea there were specific correction forms available. Thanks to everyone who shared their stories and advice. It really helps to know that acting quickly is the key and that most people got their situations resolved without major penalties. Will definitely update once I get through to an agent!

Welcome to the community! Your situation sounds exactly like what so many others here have gone through, and it's really encouraging to see you taking all the right steps immediately. The panic is totally understandable - I think anyone would feel that way when dealing with potential government penalties. You're being really smart about documenting everything and using the secure portal. From reading through all these experiences, it seems like that proactive approach is exactly what helps distinguish genuine mistakes from intentional issues. The fact that you found this thread and are following all the advice from people who've been through this before puts you in a really good position. Definitely keep us updated on how the Claimyr service works for you - it seems to be helping a lot of people get through when the regular phone system fails. The waiting and uncertainty is probably the hardest part, but based on everyone's experiences here, it sounds like you're doing everything right to get this resolved quickly. This community is such a great resource for navigating these stressful situations!

Welcome to the community! I'm also pretty new here and can totally relate to that overwhelming anxiety - I've been in a similar boat with unemployment issues and the panic is so real when you think you've messed something up with government benefits. What's really struck me reading through this whole thread is how common these phone certification errors actually are. It seems like the system itself is confusing and trips people up regularly, which makes me feel like we're not alone in making these mistakes. The fact that you're acting immediately by sending the secure message and planning to try Claimyr shows you're being super proactive about fixing it. I've been taking notes on all the advice here too - especially the documentation tips and knowing about specific forms like the TC-FOC. It's amazing how much practical knowledge gets shared in threads like this. The waiting to get through to someone is definitely the hardest part, but seeing how many people have gotten their situations resolved gives me hope for all of us dealing with similar issues. I'm new to this community and just went through this exact situation last week! Made a phone certification error where I accidentally said I wasn't looking for work when I actually was. The panic was real - I spent the whole weekend convinced I was going to face fraud charges. What really helped me was following the advice I'm seeing echoed here: I immediately sent a detailed message through the secure portal explaining exactly what happened and when, then kept trying the phone line. I actually got through on my 4th day of calling using the 8 AM strategy someone mentioned - called right at 8:00 AM and got into the queue. The agent was super understanding and said these phone system mix-ups happen constantly. She corrected my certification on the spot and just had me confirm the right information. No penalties since I reported it right away! The whole call took maybe 10 minutes once I actually got through. For anyone dealing with this now - don't panic, document everything, and keep trying. The system is definitely confusing but they have processes in place to fix honest mistakes. This thread has been such a lifesaver for people navigating these stressful situations!

Welcome to the community! I'm also new here and going through a very similar situation - it's amazing how many of us are dealing with these phone certification errors. Your proactive approach of immediately messaging through the portal and starting that documentation log shows you're handling this exactly right. I've been following this thread closely since I found it while panicking about my own mistake, and what really stands out is how consistent everyone's advice is: act quickly, document everything, and don't give up on reaching an agent. The fact that @fa735b3835d3 just shared their successful resolution after 4 days of calling gives me hope for all of us currently stuck in this situation. The Claimyr service seems to be working well for people who can't get through the regular way. I'm planning to try it myself if the 8 AM calling strategy doesn't work tomorrow. It's such a relief to find a community where people share practical solutions instead of just complaining about the system.
