EDD account registration error - can I mail in PFL certifications instead?

Hi everyone, I'm at my wit's end trying to help my husband with his EDD claim. I have his login info (email/password) but when I tried creating an actual online account for him, it's rejecting the information I enter. The system asked for his name, DOB, SSN, and EDD customer number - I entered everything correctly but keep getting an error saying the info doesn't match what's in their system. Here's my main concern: we received a paper certification form in the mail with fields for reporting work search and earnings. Can we just mail this in to keep his payments coming while we sort out the online account issue? Or is an online account absolutely required to receive benefits now? We've been calling for days but never get through to anyone. Really worried this account problem will delay his payments which we desperately need. Any advice appreciated!

Oh thank goodness! That's such a relief to hear. Did your brother eventually get his online account working? How much longer did it take with mailing vs online?

Yes, you can mail in the physical certification forms. The online system is preferred, but not mandatory. Make sure you keep a copy of everything you mail and send it certified mail if possible so you have proof of delivery. Regarding the account creation issue - are you sure you're using his EDD Customer Account Number and not his claim ID? They're different numbers. The customer account number appears on letters from EDD and should be 10 digits.

Thank you for clarifying! I was using what I thought was his customer number from the claim paperwork. I'll double check all his mail to see if there's a different 10-digit number. Great tip about sending certified mail too - will definitely do that.

OMG I had almost this EXACT same problem!!! The system kept rejecting my husband's info even though I KNEW it was correct. Turns out there was a tiny typo in his birthdate in their system (they had day/month switched). We found this out after WEEKS of frustration. Definitely mail in the paper forms while you try to fix this. But also keep trying to reach someone by phone because eventually you'll need to get that account issue resolved. Mail processing is soooo slow and you could miss payments if something gets lost.

That's so helpful to know! I'll definitely check for possible typos in his paperwork. It's so frustrating that one small error can cause so many problems. Did you eventually get through to someone to fix the birthday issue?

Just a quick note - make sure you're trying to register on the correct site. There's the regular UI Online site and the separate Benefits Programs Online portal. You need to create the BPO account first, then connect to UI Online. Lots of people try to create directly on the wrong system. Also check capitalization in the name - sometimes the system is picky about exact matches (like "Mc Donald" vs "McDonald").

I didn't even realize there were two different systems! I'll check which one I was trying to use. And good point about the name formatting - his last name does have unusual capitalization so maybe that's causing issues.

This is a common issue. While you can absolutely mail in paper certifications (and should do so to keep benefits flowing), here's what you need to know: 1. Mail processing takes 7-10 business days vs. 2-3 days online 2. The mismatch is likely due to one of these issues: - Name format in system doesn't match exactly what you're entering (including hyphens, spaces, Jr/Sr) - SSN typo in their system or your entry - Customer account number confusion (10-digit vs claim number) I suggest mailing the certification immediately, then simultaneously trying to fix the online access. Have you tried the account recovery option rather than new registration? Sometimes that works better with existing claims.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I'll mail the certification tomorrow. I haven't tried account recovery - that's a great suggestion. His name does have an unusual spelling so maybe that's causing the issue. I'll try the recovery option tonight!

If you're still struggling to get through on the phone after trying everything else, I'd recommend using Claimyr. It was a lifesaver when I had account issues with my maternity leave claim. They connect you directly to an EDD agent without the endless busy signals and hangups. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 I was skeptical at first but ended up getting connected to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes after trying for weeks on my own. The agent was able to fix my account registration issues on the spot.

I've never heard of this service but at this point I'm willing to try anything! The video looks really helpful. Did they explain what was causing your registration problems when you finally got through?

I didn't even think about going in person! Do you know if I need an appointment or can I just show up? Might be worth the trip if it solves everything in one visit.

Just make sure you're continuing to certify on time even if you mail it in!! My friend didn't certify for a couple weeks while trying to fix her account issue and they closed her whole claim! Had to start the process all over again. The EDD system is SO unforgiving about deadlines.

omg yes this happened to my cousin too!! the worst part is they don't even tell u when they close it, u just stop getting paid and then have 2 call and wait forever to find out why

One more important thing I forgot to mention - when mailing certifications, make sure you use black or blue ink (not pencil), sign the form, and mail it to the correct processing center listed on your paperwork. Different claim types go to different addresses. Also, keep certifying every two weeks regardless of whether you've received payment for previous periods. Missing a certification period can cause significant delays even with a valid reason.

Thank you for these additional details! I'll make sure to use blue ink and verify the correct mailing address. We'll definitely keep up with the bi-weekly certifications even while sorting out the account issues.
