Accidentally marked 'not working for company anymore' during EDD certification - how to fix this mistake?
I'm having a total panic moment right now! While certifying for benefits last Sunday, I accidentally clicked the option saying I'm 'not going to be working for the company any longer' when I'm DEFINITELY still employed at my part-time job. I realized my mistake immediately after submitting. I've been calling EDD non-stop since 8:00 AM Monday morning but keep getting the 'we're experiencing high call volume' message and then it hangs up! So frustrating! I already sent a message through UI Online explaining the mistake, but I'm worried about my payment being delayed or getting disqualified. There's an EDD/disability office about 20 minutes from my house - would it be worth going there to explain in person? Do they even handle certification corrections there or is that a waste of time? Has anyone made a similar mistake when certifying? How long did it take to resolve? I really need this week's payment to make rent and I'm freaking out that this stupid misclick is going to cause major problems.

I made almost the exact same mistake last year. Unfortunately, the local EDD office probably won't be able to help with this. These offices mainly handle basic information and document drop-offs, not actual claim corrections. Your best bet is to keep calling the main EDD number (1-800-300-5616). Try calling at 8:01 AM exactly (not 8:00 - everyone calls then) or around 11:30 AM when the morning rush dies down. The written message you sent is good backup, but it can take 5-7 days for them to read those. Once you do get through to a rep, they can correct the certification error pretty easily - takes 5 minutes to fix but hours to reach someone who can do it.

•Thanks for the advice! I'll try calling at 8:01 tomorrow instead of right at 8:00. Do you remember if your benefits were delayed while they fixed the error? I'm so worried about missing my rent payment.

the same EXACT thing happened to me!!! dont go to the office its a waste of time trust me. you'll sit there for like 4 hours and theyll just tell u to call the 800 number anyway. keep calling and trying different times during the day thats ur best bet.

I recommend using Claimyr to get through to an EDD representative. I was in a similar situation with a certification error and spent days trying to get through. I found the Claimyr service online (claimyr.com) and they were able to get me connected to an EDD agent within about 20 minutes. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km It saved me hours of frustration and the rep was able to fix my certification issue right away. For certification errors like yours, you definitely need to speak with someone directly rather than waiting for them to read your message in the portal.

•is this legit? seems sketchy to use a third party when dealing with government benefits...

•Yes, it's legitimate. They don't access your EDD account or anything like that - they just help connect your call through to EDD when the lines are jammed. You still talk directly with an actual EDD representative to resolve your issue. I was skeptical too but was desperate after days of trying to get through.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T JUST WAIT FOR THEM TO READ YOUR MESSAGE!!! I made a similar mistake (accidentally reported vacation hours as regular work hours) and thought the message I sent would be enough. WRONG! They put my claim on hold for THREE WEEKS and then I got a notice saying I needed an eligibility interview!!! By then I was behind on all my bills. The online message system is basically a black hole - you MUST talk to a human on the phone to fix certification errors quickly.

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of! I really can't afford to wait 3 weeks. I'll definitely keep trying to get through on the phone. Thanks for the warning!

Pro tip: The disability offices you're referring to are actually Employment Development Department (EDD) offices that handle multiple programs including disability AND unemployment. However, they generally can't directly fix certification errors in the system. What they CAN do is: 1. Give you the direct phone numbers to specific departments (sometimes different than the main line) 2. Help you submit a written statement about the error 3. Sometimes make internal notes on your account If you're really struggling to get through on the phone, visiting in person isn't completely useless, but it's not as effective as speaking directly with a claims specialist on the phone. I'd try the phone for at least 2-3 more days before resorting to an in-person visit.

•This is really helpful information - thank you! If I still can't get through by Friday, I might try the office just to see if they can at least document that I've been trying to fix the mistake.

I know everyone says calling is better but honestly the written message might work faster than you think. My roommate had an issue with her certification (clicked wrong box for work search) and they actually fixed it within 3 days after she sent a message. Just depends on who sees your message I guess. Good luck either way!

•Your roommate got SUPER lucky. That's definitely not normal. Most messages take 5-10 business days minimum to get a response. I wouldn't rely on that method unless you're ok with potentially waiting weeks for a resolution.

Regarding your actual error - checking that you're no longer working for your employer - the EDD system flags this as a potential voluntary quit situation, which can trigger a disqualification review. That's why it's important to get it fixed ASAP. When you do reach a representative, make sure they understand it was simply a misclick and that you're still employed at the same job. They should be able to correct the certification and remove any potential disqualification flags on your account. Just be persistent with calling - that's unfortunately the fastest way to resolve this type of error.

•Thank you for explaining that! I didn't realize it could trigger a disqualification review - that makes me even more anxious to get it fixed quickly. I'll keep trying the phone numbers and hopefully get through soon.

•I've only been trying the main 800-300-5616 number. Do you know what the other numbers are? I'll try anything at this point!

•The other main EDD numbers are 1-833-978-2511 (general help) and 1-866-333-4606 (automated self-service). However, for certification corrections, you specifically need the 5616 number since the others don't have representatives who can access and modify your certification details. The 2511 agents can only help with general questions and account issues.

Update: I FINALLY got through to EDD this morning! Called at 8:01 exactly like someone suggested, waited on hold for about 35 minutes, but eventually spoke to a representative. They confirmed this was a simple error they could fix, and the representative updated my certification on the spot. She said my payment should process normally within 24-48 hours. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for your advice and help with this stressful situation.

•Great news! This is exactly why speaking directly with a representative is so important for certification errors. Glad you got it resolved quickly.
