EDD SDI claim issue - misspelled doctor's name on application, will this delay benefits?

I submitted my SDI application last week and just realized I misspelled my doctor's name (typed "Johansen" instead of "Johanson"). Now I'm freaking out that this will cause my claim to be denied or delayed. Has anyone dealt with this before? Will EDD automatically correct this or contact my doctor to verify? Should I call them to fix it or submit some kind of correction form? I really can't afford any delays in my benefits since I just had surgery and will be out of work for at least 8 weeks. Ugh, why did I not double-check everything more carefully?!

dont worry about it too much. i put my doctors name wrong too and my claim still went thru. EDD usually checks the license number not just the name

Oh thank you! That makes me feel better. I did include her correct license number, so hopefully that's what matters. Did your benefits get delayed at all because of the name issue?

Small typos in your doctor's name generally won't cause major issues with your claim. The EDD system primarily matches your claim to your doctor's certification using their license number and your personal information. However, it's still a good idea to correct it if possible. You can call EDD to have them note the correction on your file. Did your doctor already submit their portion of the certification? If so, and their information matches in their system, you should be fine.

Yes, my doctor submitted her part already - she did it electronically right after my appointment. I'll try calling EDD tomorrow just to be sure they note the correct spelling. Thank you for explaining this!

This happened to me with my pregnancy disability claim! I misspelled my OBGYN's last name (it's complicated lol) and freaked out too. Called EDD and waited for TWO HOURS only for them to tell me it was fine because the license number was correct. Total waste of time.

JUST A WARNING - if ur doctor filled out a paper form & mailed it in, a name mispelling COULD cause delays bc sometimes the mail room can't match it to ur claim!!! happened to my husband in 2024 & it took an extra 3 WEEKS to fix!!! Call them ASAP and ask to speak to a TIER 2 agent who can note your account!!

Oh no, that sounds awful! My doctor did it electronically, so hopefully that's better? But now I'm worried again... I've been trying to call but can't get through.

If you need to reach EDD quickly, I'd recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was in a similar situation with an urgent correction needed, and after days of failed attempts calling directly, I used their service and got connected to an EDD agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. Saved me weeks of stress during my disability claim when I couldn't afford delays.

A minor spelling error in your doctor's name typically won't cause issues with your SDI claim processing. The EDD system primarily identifies medical providers through their license numbers, NPI (National Provider Identifier), and your personal identification information. However, here's what I recommend: 1. Check your SDI Online account to see if there's an option to submit a correction. 2. If your doctor submitted their certification electronically, the chance of a mismatch is even lower. 3. If you're still concerned, call EDD and speak with a representative who can add a note to your file. I've worked with hundreds of disability claims, and these minor typos rarely impact benefit payments if the substantive information is correct.

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! I checked my SDI Online account and don't see any option to submit corrections. My doctor did submit her certification electronically, so it sounds like I should be ok. I'll still try to call just to be safe.

My sister in law worked for EDD for 12 years and she said they deal with misspelled names ALL THE TIME and have systems to handle it. As long as u didn't completely make up a fake doctor u should be fine lol

im on my second disability claim this year and honestly EDD is so slow right now with processing that by the time they even look at your claim, your doctor will probably have already submitted their part and they'll just connect them. i wouldn't even bother calling them unless your claim status shows some kind of problem after a few weeks.

This isn't always good advice. While it's true that minor typos often don't cause issues, it's important to be proactive with your disability claim. Waiting until there's a visible problem could potentially delay benefits by weeks. That said, if the doctor has already electronically certified the claim, the risk is lower.

I work in a doctor's office and we submit SDI certifications all the time. Trust me, patients misspell our doctors' names constantly and it rarely causes issues. The system mostly looks at the license number, NPI, and your SSN to match things up. In the rare case there's a problem, EDD will usually contact the medical office directly to verify.

Thank you! That's really reassuring to hear from someone who works in a medical office. Makes me feel much better about my situation.

UPDATE??? Did your claim go through ok? I'm in a similar boat (except I misspelled MY OWN MIDDLE NAME somehow 🤦‍♀️) and freaking out!!

Yes! I got approved three days ago with no issues at all. I did end up calling EDD using that Claimyr service someone recommended above, and they told me the doctor's name spelling wasn't a problem since her license number matched. For your situation with your own name, that might be more important to correct - definitely call them!

Congratulations on getting approved! That's such a relief. I'm dealing with something similar right now - accidentally put the wrong middle initial for my orthopedic surgeon on my SDI application (put "J" instead of "G"). Reading through all these responses has been really helpful. It sounds like as long as the license number is correct, these minor spelling errors usually don't cause problems. Still nerve-wracking when you need those benefits though! Thanks for sharing your experience and glad everything worked out for you.

Thank you! And yes, definitely nerve-wracking when you're depending on those benefits. Your situation with the wrong middle initial sounds very similar to mine - I bet you'll be fine since you have the correct license number. The waiting is the hardest part! If you do end up needing to call EDD, that Claimyr service really did help me get through faster than trying to call directly. Good luck with your claim!

I'm a new member here and just went through something similar! I submitted my SDI claim 2 months ago and accidentally wrote my doctor's first name as "Michael" instead of "Mitchell" - I was so stressed about it. But my claim was approved without any issues at all. Like others have mentioned, the license number is really what matters most. The EDD system is pretty good at matching things up even with minor spelling errors. I know it's scary when you're depending on those benefits, but try not to worry too much! Your situation sounds very manageable, especially since your doctor already submitted their part electronically.

Thanks for sharing your experience! It's really helpful to hear from someone who went through the exact same thing. I'm a newcomer here too and was panicking about a similar spelling error on my application. Your story about "Michael" vs "Mitchell" gives me hope that my situation will work out okay. It's amazing how these small mistakes can cause so much stress when you're already dealing with being out of work! Did you end up calling EDD at all or just let the process run its course?

Hi everyone! I'm new to this community and just submitted my SDI application yesterday. Reading through this thread has been incredibly reassuring - I made a similar mistake and put my doctor's last name as "Peterson" instead of "Petersen" (one letter off!). I've been losing sleep over it thinking my claim would get rejected. It's so comforting to see that so many of you have dealt with this exact issue and still got approved. The consensus seems to be that as long as the license number is correct, these minor spelling errors don't usually cause problems. Thank you all for sharing your experiences - this community is a lifesaver for someone like me who's navigating this process for the first time!

Welcome to the community, Olivia! I'm also pretty new here and your situation sounds almost identical to mine - I had a one-letter spelling error in my doctor's name too. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been such a relief! It's wild how these tiny mistakes can cause so much anxiety when you're already stressed about being out of work and needing benefits. From what I've gathered from all these responses, you should be totally fine with just the "Peterson" vs "Petersen" difference, especially if you included the correct license number. The electronic submission system seems pretty forgiving with minor typos. Try not to stress too much about it - easier said than done, I know! Keep us posted on how your claim goes!

Hi there! I'm new to this community and just wanted to say thank you for posting this question - I'm in almost the exact same situation! I submitted my SDI application a few days ago and realized I misspelled my doctor's name too (wrote "Williams" instead of "Williamson"). I've been so anxious about it potentially delaying my benefits since I'm recovering from back surgery and really need the income. Reading through all these responses has been incredibly helpful and reassuring. It sounds like as long as the license number is correct (which mine is), these minor spelling errors are pretty common and usually don't cause issues. I love how supportive this community is - everyone sharing their experiences really helps newcomers like us who are navigating this process for the first time. Hope your claim continues to go smoothly!

Welcome to the community, Freya! Your situation with "Williams" vs "Williamson" sounds so similar to what many of us have experienced. I'm also relatively new here and was amazed at how common these spelling errors are - it's actually kind of comforting to know we're not alone in making these mistakes when we're stressed and dealing with medical issues! The consensus from everyone's experiences really does seem to be that the license number is the key identifier that EDD uses. Since you have that correct, you should be in good shape. Back surgery recovery is tough enough without worrying about benefit delays, so I hope your claim processes smoothly and quickly. This community has been such a great resource for navigating these situations - definitely keep us updated on how things go!

Hi! I'm new to this community and just wanted to add my experience to help ease everyone's worries about spelling errors. I submitted my SDI claim about 6 weeks ago and made not one, but TWO spelling mistakes - I misspelled both my doctor's first name (wrote "Catherine" instead of "Katherine") AND got one letter wrong in her last name. I was absolutely panicking thinking my claim would be rejected or delayed for weeks. But guess what? My claim was approved without any issues at all! The EDD rep I eventually spoke to confirmed that their system primarily matches based on license numbers and patient information, not exact name spelling. She said they see these types of errors constantly and have procedures to handle them. For anyone new here dealing with similar anxiety - take a deep breath! Based on all the experiences shared in this thread, you're most likely going to be just fine. This community has been such a great source of support and information!

Welcome to the community, Madison! Your story about having TWO spelling errors and still getting approved is so reassuring - thank you for sharing that! I'm also new here and have been worried about a similar issue with my doctor's name on my SDI application. It's incredible how much anxiety these small mistakes can cause when you're already dealing with being out of work and needing benefits. Reading through everyone's experiences in this thread has been such a relief. It really seems like the EDD system is more forgiving than we think, especially when the important details like license numbers are correct. Hi everyone! I'm brand new to this community and just wanted to say how helpful this entire thread has been. I submitted my SDI application last week and made a similar error - I accidentally wrote my doctor's name as "Dr. Jennifer Smith" when it should be "Dr. Jennifer Schmidt". I've been so stressed about it potentially affecting my claim, especially since I'm out of work after knee surgery and really need these benefits. Reading through all of your experiences has been incredibly reassuring! It seems like the consensus is that as long as the license number is correct (which mine is), these spelling errors are quite common and usually don't cause delays. The fact that so many of you have shared similar stories and positive outcomes really helps calm my nerves. Thank you all for being so open about your experiences - it means a lot to newcomers like me who are navigating this process for the first time and feeling anxious about every little detail!

Welcome to the community, Amelia! Your "Smith" vs "Schmidt" situation sounds very similar to what so many of us have experienced - it's amazing how common these spelling errors are when we're stressed about medical situations! I'm also fairly new here and was initially panicking about a similar mistake on my application. This thread has been such a lifesaver for understanding that these minor spelling differences rarely cause issues as long as the license number is correct. Knee surgery recovery is challenging enough without the added worry about benefit delays, so I really hope your claim processes smoothly and quickly. Everyone's positive experiences shared here have been so reassuring - it's wonderful to have a supportive community where people share real outcomes to help ease each other's anxiety. Please keep us updated on how your claim goes!

Hi! I'm new to this community and just wanted to share my recent experience to help others who might be worried about similar issues. I submitted my SDI claim about 3 weeks ago and accidentally misspelled my doctor's name as "Dr. Johnson" instead of "Dr. Jonson" (missing an 'h'). I was so anxious about it potentially delaying my benefits since I'm recovering from shoulder surgery. After reading through this thread and seeing everyone's positive experiences, I decided to just wait it out rather than stress about calling EDD. Sure enough, my claim was approved last week without any issues! The license number being correct really does seem to be the key factor. It's such a relief to know that these minor spelling errors are more common than we think and that the EDD system is designed to handle them. Thank you to everyone who shared their stories - this community has been invaluable for a newcomer like me navigating this process for the first time!
