EDD payment delay after certification - Money Network card not showing deposit
I certified for my UI benefits on Sunday morning at 7am like I always do, but it's now Tuesday evening and my payment still shows as 'pending' in UI Online. Normally the money hits my Money Network card by Monday afternoon at the latest. Has anyone else noticed delays this week? My rent is due Friday and I'm starting to get nervous. I checked my claim history and everything looks normal - no flags or messages about additional verification needed. Just says 'pending payment'. Is the system backed up or should I be worried?

•That's interesting your roommate got paid normal time. Are you both on regular UI? Maybe it's affecting some accounts and not others?

There's actually a payment processing delay affecting about 30% of claims this week according to what an EDD rep told me this morning. They're working through a backlog because they implemented some new fraud detection measures over the weekend. Most pending payments should process within 72 hours of certification instead of the usual 24-48 hours. If it goes beyond Thursday, then you might want to contact them.

•How did you actually get through to someone?! I've been calling for 3 days straight and keep getting the "we're experiencing high call volume" message before it hangs up on me. I'm in the same boat - certified Sunday, still pending Tuesday night.

This happens periodically throughout the year, especially when they update their systems. I've been on UI for about 8 months now, and I've seen at least 3-4 instances where payments were delayed by 1-3 days. It's stressful, but if your certification went through normally and you don't have any unresolved issues on your account, the payment will arrive. Just be aware that sometimes the Money Network card takes an additional business day to show a deposit even after EDD has released the payment. The UI Online status will update to "paid" before your card shows the deposit.

•Is this true even if you selected direct deposit instead of the card? I switched to direct deposit last month but my bank account doesn't show anything pending either. I'm worried I messed something up with my account setup.

I swear EDD does this ON PURPOSE right when rent is due. Every. Single. Time. I've had my benefits delayed at least 4 times in the past year and it ALWAYS happens at the end of the month. Can't be a coincidence. They know exactly what they're doing to stress people out.

UPDATE: Just checked UI Online and my status changed from "pending" to "paid" about an hour ago! Still not showing in my Money Network account yet, but at least I know it's on the way. Looks like there really was just a processing delay like some of you mentioned. Thanks for helping me not panic!

•Great news! Your Money Network card should update by tomorrow morning. These system delays are stressful but almost always resolve within the 72-hour window.

This happened to me last month too, but it was because I answered one of the certification questions wrong. I said I was "too sick to work" on one day (had a terrible cold) and that triggered some kind of review flag. Maybe double check your certification answers if this keeps happening?

•Thanks for the suggestion, but I double-checked my certification and everything looked normal. I said I was able and available to work all days, looked for work, and didn't refuse any work. Seems like it was just a system delay this time. But that's good to know about the sick day thing - I'll be careful about that in the future!

I've been on unemployment three times in the past five years and I've learned you should ALWAYS keep at least one month of expenses saved if possible, even while on UI. The payment system is just too unpredictable, especially around holidays, end of quarters, and system updates. Last December they had a two-week delay for thousands of people right before Christmas! If you can't get through on the phone, try the Contact EDD function in UI Online or visit an in-person office if there's one near you.

•Must be nice to have "one month of expenses saved"... some of us are living paycheck to paycheck BECAUSE we lost our jobs. That's not helpful advice when you're already struggling.
