EDD eligibility interview no-show - pregnant and terminated from job

Hi everyone, I'm currently 25 weeks pregnant and in a really stressful situation. I was terminated from my warehouse position about 3 weeks ago (they said performance issues, but honestly it started right after I told them I was pregnant). Anyway, I filed for unemployment and EDD scheduled an eligibility phone interview for today between 10am-12pm. I waited by my phone the entire time, didn't miss any calls, but no one from EDD ever called me. My UI Online account still shows the interview as scheduled for today with no updates. Is a no-show interview usually a good sign? Like maybe they've already approved my claim without needing to talk to me? Or should I be worried something went wrong? I'm getting really anxious since I desperately need this income with a baby on the way and medical bills piling up.

mssed interviews happen ALL THE TIME. my interview was scheduled for 8-10am and they called me at 4:30pm that day lol. just keep ur phone on u for the next couple days

Really?? That's so stressful! Did yours eventually go through okay? I'm just worried because I literally can't afford any delays right now.

This happens frequently - EDD interviews often run behind schedule by hours or even days. It doesn't necessarily indicate approval or denial. Here's what you should do: 1. Keep your phone available for the next 2-3 business days - they'll likely call without warning 2. Check your UI Online portal for any message updates 3. Look for mail from EDD - sometimes they send determination notices without completing the interview if they have sufficient information While waiting, make sure you continue certifying for benefits every two weeks. Missing the interview won't automatically disqualify you, but failing to certify will definitely cause payment delays. Given your pregnancy situation, also document any medical restrictions if your doctor has advised against certain types of work. That documentation may be relevant during your interview.

Thank you so much for the detailed response! I've been certifying regularly and keeping good records about my termination. My doctor did write a note about lifting restrictions but my employer refused to accommodate. Should I mention this during the interview when/if they call?

Have you checked your spam folder for any emails from EDD? Sometimes they send rescheduling notices that end up filtered. Also check your contact information is correct in UI Online!

Just double-checked and don't see anything in spam or junk. All my contact info is correct in the system. This is so frustrating.

I went through something similar last month. My interview was scheduled for Tuesday, they never called, then they randomly called Thursday afternoon. The interviewer told me they're severely backlogged and running 2-3 days behind on most interviews. Absolutely mention the doctor's note and failure to accommodate during your interview. That's critical information since employer terminations during pregnancy can fall under wrongful termination, which strengthens your UI claim. In my experience, when the employer violated labor laws, EDD tends to side with the claimant. If you don't receive a call by the end of the week, you can try contacting EDD directly, though that's its own challenge with their overwhelmed phone system.

That's really helpful to know. I'll definitely mention the doctor's note and how they changed their treatment of me after I announced the pregnancy. If I don't hear anything by Friday, I'll try calling them, though I hear it's nearly impossible to get through.

Exactly! I got my interview call on a SATURDAY at 8am when it was scheduled for Wednesday 2-4pm. Their scheduling system must be from the stone age. But @OP - don't worry, a no-show usually doesn't mean anything bad. They're just overwhelmed and disorganized.

If they don't call by tomorrow, you should call them! That's what I did, I waiting 2 days after my missed interview then finally called. They had me on a completely different day in their system, it was a total mess up on their part.

I'll definitely try calling if they don't reach out soon. How did you manage to get through to them? Every time I've called it's been the dreaded "we're experiencing high call volume" message.

Honestly, it took me like 28 calls over 2 days. Its absolutely ridiculous how hard it is to reach someone at EDD.

After spending three weeks trying to reach EDD about a similar interview issue, I finally discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com). It's a service that basically calls EDD for you and then calls you when they have an agent on the line. Saved me hours of redial hell. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km It was the only way I finally got my interview rescheduled after EDD missed my original appointment. Worth it for the peace of mind, especially in your situation when you're pregnant and need this resolved quickly.

Thank you for this suggestion! I just looked at their site - does it really work? Seems like it might be worth trying if I don't hear anything by tomorrow.

It worked for me! Got connected to EDD in about 25 minutes when I'd spent days trying on my own with no luck. The rep I spoke with was able to see my file and confirm they were running behind on interviews.

One more thing that might help - when they do call, they typically show up as "Unknown" or "No Caller ID" on your phone. Make sure you're answering all calls, even ones that look like spam, until you get your interview completed. Regarding your pregnancy-related termination, definitely have your timeline ready: - When you informed your employer - When the "performance issues" began being documented - Dates of any doctor notes or accommodation requests - Any witnesses to comments about your pregnancy This information will be crucial during your interview. If your employer terminated you because of your pregnancy, that's actually a potential DFEH/EEOC issue separate from your UI claim, but it significantly strengthens your unemployment case.

This is such good advice. I've been answering every single call, even the obvious spam ones. I have all those dates documented and even saved some emails where my supervisor complained about me needing more bathroom breaks after previously having no issues with my performance. I'll have everything ready when they finally call.

Just wanted to share that my husband had an interview scheduled at 10AM that didn't happen until 2:30PM THE NEXT DAY! EDD is running incredibly behind on everything. But good news is he got approved despite the delay. Just keep your phone nearby and answer everything!

That makes me feel a lot better, thanks! I'll just keep waiting and hope they call soon.

Quick update question: It's been about 24 hours since your original post - have you received any calls or UI Online account updates yet?

They just called me 30 minutes ago! The interviewer was actually really nice and said they're running 2 days behind schedule. The interview went well - they asked about my doctor's note and the timeline of events with my employer. She said I should receive a determination in 7-10 days, but everything sounded positive. Thanks everyone for the support and advice!
