EDD customer account number missing - can't check claim status filed 2 weeks ago

I'm trying to help my son who filed for unemployment about 2 weeks ago. He's attempted to check the status of his claim online, but the system is asking for a customer account number and he's completely lost. He hasn't received ANYTHING in the mail from EDD yet - no paperwork, no account number, no confirmation, nothing at all. Is this normal? How long does it typically take to get the customer account number in the mail? Without it, he can't create his UI Online account or check his claim status. He's getting really anxious since rent is due soon and he needs to know if his claim is even being processed. Any advice on how to get this number or check his status without it would be SO appreciated!

The customer account number is usually sent in the mail within 10-14 business days after filing a claim. Since it's only been about 2 weeks, it might arrive any day now. That letter will have both the customer account number and the EDD Customer Account Number (EDDCAN) that he'll need to register for UI Online. If it's been more than 15 business days, he should try calling EDD at 1-800-300-5616. But be warned - getting through is nearly impossible these days.

Thank you! That's really helpful to know. He applied exactly 13 days ago, so maybe it will come in the next day or two. Do you know if there's any way to check if his application was received without having that account number yet?

they shud have sent him an email after he applyed did he check junk folder??? sometimes the spam filter catch it. also tell him make sure his address is correct on the application bc they ONLY send account # by mail, NOT email

He's been checking his email obsessively (including spam folders) and hasn't seen anything from EDD. He's 100% sure the address is correct on the application. I guess we just need to be patient for a few more days.

I went through the EXACT same thing with my claim back in January! So frustrating!! I waited for like 3 weeks and nothing came in the mail. I was going crazy refreshing my email every 5 minutes. Eventually I just had to call them and after being on hold for like 2 hours they told me there was a "processing delay" whatever that means 🙄 But they gave me my account number over the phone and I was able to set everything up right away.

Based on my experience, here's what might be happening: 1. Normal processing time is 7-10 business days for the account number letter 2. Current processing times are running a bit longer (12-15 business days) 3. Your son CAN create a UI Online account, but only after receiving that customer account number One thing to check - did he apply online or by phone? If online, he should have received a confirmation number immediately after submitting. If he has that, it's proof his application was received. Also, make sure he certified for benefits for any weeks he's eligible once he gets access to the system. If he doesn't receive anything by the end of this week (15+ business days), then he should definitely try contacting EDD.

He applied online and does have the confirmation number saved! That's definitely reassuring. I'll tell him to wait until the end of this week before panicking. What's the best way to contact EDD if the letter doesn't arrive?

After trying to reach EDD for WEEKS with no luck, I found this service called Claimyr that actually helped me get through to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes. It basically keeps calling EDD for you until it gets through, then connects you. Saved me from the constant busy signals and hanging up. I used it when my account number never showed up (turned out they had my address wrong). Check out their demo video: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km and their site is claimyr.com. Seriously a lifesaver when you absolutely need to talk to someone at EDD.

Is that legit?? Sounds too good to be true. I spent 3 days straight calling EDD last month and wanted to throw my phone out the window. Does EDD actually talk to you when they call or is it just another automated system?

Yes it's legit! When they get through, they connect you directly to the EDD phone queue, but you're already past the busy signals and automated hangups. You still might wait on hold but at least you're in line. You talk to a real EDD representative who can help with your claim.

Just wanted to update everyone - the EDD letter with the customer account number FINALLY came in the mail today! It was exactly 16 days after he applied. He's getting his UI Online account set up now. Thanks to everyone for your help and advice!

Great to hear! Make sure he completes his account setup right away and certifies for any weeks he's eligible for. The first payment often takes 7-10 days after certification, so he should plan finances accordingly. Also, remind him to complete all work search activities and document them in case EDD requests proof later.

congrats!! now make sure he dosnt miss ANY certifications or they will close his claim so fast!!!!

That's awesome news! 16 days is pretty typical right now from what I've seen. Just a heads up - once he gets his account set up, he'll need to certify for benefits every two weeks (usually on Sunday). The system will tell him exactly when his next certification is due. Also, if he's been unemployed since he applied, he might be able to certify for those past weeks retroactively to get payments for the time he's been waiting. Make sure he doesn't skip that step!
