EDD customer account number not working during registration - system keeps rejecting it
So frustrated right now! I got laid off from my warehouse job last week and filed for unemployment right away. I received my EDD customer account number in the mail yesterday (that green and white paper), but when I tried to register on UI Online, the system keeps saying my account number is invalid! I've triple-checked the number, tried with and without dashes, and even waited a day thinking maybe there's a delay in their system. Still nothing works. Has anyone else run into this problem? I've called the EDD helpline about 20 times today but either get the "we're experiencing high call volume" message or it just disconnects me. My rent is due in two weeks and I really need to get this sorted out ASAP!

This happened to me back in January. There's actually a 10-day processing period AFTER you receive your customer account number before it becomes active in their system. The letter doesn't mention this anywhere, which is ridiculous. Try waiting a few more days before attempting to register again. Also, make sure you're entering it exactly as shown on the paper (with or without dashes depending on how it appears).

•Seriously?? 10 days AFTER I already got the letter? That makes no sense! The letter literally says to register online right away using this number. Why would they send it if it's not ready to use? EDD is so confusing!

•I've checked the number like 50 times now... it's definitely correct. The system just keeps saying it doesn't match their records. So frustrating!

I had THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM last month!! The EDD system is ABSOLUTELY BROKEN!! I spent TWO WEEKS trying to register with my customer account number and got nowhere. I finally had to go to my local EDD office IN PERSON to get it fixed because nobody answered the phones. Turns out they had my birthdate wrong in their system by ONE DAY, which caused the verification to fail. Check if you're entering all your other info 100% correctly too!!

•Going to the office in person is actually good advice. They can sometimes fix things on the spot that would take weeks over the phone (if you can even get through).

There are a few potential issues that could be causing this problem: 1. As mentioned, there can be a processing delay between when you receive the customer account number and when it's fully activated in the system. This typically takes 3-5 business days, not necessarily 10. 2. Make sure you're using the correct website: https://www.edd.ca.gov/Unemployment/UI_Online.htm 3. The most common error is mixing up your EDD Customer Account Number with your EDD Claimant ID number. They are different numbers. The Customer Account Number should be 10 digits. 4. Try clearing your browser cache and cookies, or using a different browser altogether. 5. If you're still having issues after trying these steps, you'll need to speak with an EDD representative directly.

•Thank you for the detailed response! You're right, I was using the 10-digit Customer Account Number that came in the mail. I've tried a different browser and clearing cookies but still no luck. Looks like I'll have to wait a few days or somehow get through to a representative.

When this happened to me i just kept calling the 833 number every single day. took me like a week but i finally got thru to someone. they fixed it in like 5 minutes once i got a real person. the problem was they had typed my middle name wrong or something stupid.

•If you're having trouble getting through to EDD by phone, I'd recommend trying Claimyr. It helped me get through to an actual EDD rep when I was dealing with a similar registration issue. You can check out how it works at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km that shows the process. It basically keeps dialing for you until it gets through, then calls you back when there's an agent. Saved me days of frustration when my account number wasn't working.

Sometimes the system takes time to update. When did you first file your claim? If it was less than a week ago, the database might still be processing your information. And just to be clear, are you trying to register a brand new UI Online account? Or are you trying to file a new claim with an existing account?

•I filed exactly 8 days ago and got the customer account number in the mail yesterday. I'm trying to create a brand new UI Online account since this is my first time on unemployment. Never had to use EDD before this.

•That doesn't always work! I tried that approach EVERY DAY for a WEEK!! The phone lines are JAMMED by 8:01am!! The whole system is DESIGNED to keep people from getting help!!

One more thing to check - the system is case-sensitive for some of the fields, and sometimes people enter their name in all caps or with different spacing than what's on their official records. Make sure everything matches your ID exactly as it would appear in their system.

•That's a good point - I'll try some variations with the capitalization. At this point I'm willing to try anything! I'll also try that Claimyr service someone mentioned if I can't get through in the next day or two. Really appreciate everyone's help!

•Will do! I'm going to try waiting another 2-3 days first to see if it's just that processing delay people mentioned. If that doesn't work, I'll try getting through to a rep. I'll post back here once I figure it out!
